so last night i threw it in the dvd player and watched it for only the second time since the box set was released, the first being when it first came out. i forgot how good it actually was. its the perfect film to get you pumped for an upcoming hip show in your area, thats for sure. my favourite thing about the film is the little stores the band members tell about their early days. like the bus full of cheerleaders part, where paul or gord, i forget who already, once charged a pyramid of cheerleaders. that was great. anyways, i'm bored so i thought i'd make a thread about Macroscopic, it deserves one.

I've been trying to do this in photoshop for a while now and I cannot for the life of me figure it out. Basically I'm trying to add a roughed-up effect to something similar to the images in this post (they are crops taken from some of this year's hip dvd covers). The third photo is one of the headers here for the hipbase, and again it has that rough effect across the whole canvas.

I would really like to download a few shows, but .torrent files are blocked from being downloaded here at my residence. The loophole is that people can send me .torrent files through programs such as MSN, or if through email (if they are zipped). I was wondering if somebody else who is signed up could possibly help me out and send me a few .torrent files.

I have been a T.H. fan since the late 80,s.Due to where I live and work have just seen them 4 times.Latest being last week in Kamloops.Had been looking forward to the show for so long but part way through for some reason my excitement seemed to be getting less.Wasnt sure exactly why .
But I do now.For starters there were just far too many songs from the new CD.
( I was so worried they would do Music @ Work,Thankfully they didnt)

A CD that all in all is not that good in the first place.Lets face it,like most bands who seem to thrive on the road and are at their best,the T.H. have never been one to release subperb CD,s that you can listen to all the way through and only pull out a handful of songs that you considered great.This new CD has even less of those.

I remember looking forward to the release of the live CD.Even that disapointed me so a few years back I made my own live TH CD from downloading live material and my CD was far superior.My question to my wife was"if I could make a great TH CD why couldnt they"?
And from reading this forum I realized what else was wrtong with the show.It was them playing every song on stage identical to the recordings.If the song were 3.36 on the CD it was 3.36 on stage.Again, the TH just have far too many 3minute songs on their CD,s.Just when a song seems to get going it ends
Everytime I hear Fully Completly live it feels like the song has to go on longer.Not just stop where the recording did.
Also on this tour Gord just isnt into his story telling like he used to be.Now he is more into dancing and to be honest I thought the playing with the mike stand during Meridiam looked silly.
All in all I left the show very disapointed.
Maybe every year on the road for 20 years is slowing them down, maybe the thrill just isnt there for them anymore either?

Oh,and I too am sick of NOIS.When they did it in Kamloops they just went through the motions.
And doing a boring Bob Dylan song for an encore?
Whats with that?

Thankfully they ended the night with a great version of Blow. That song is still done very powerfully on stage

One last thing.

For someone to say...

"easy solution if you're sick of hearing songs..don't go to the shows...it's that simple..if we all know that there will be certain songs played, accept it..deal with it..move on with it.."

A person says they are sick of one song and it is suggested dont go to the show then?????

So I've been running a phpBB forum for about 1.5 years now and recently I've started getting a lot of dickhead people trying to become users and posting spam to the message board.

Anyway, I try to keep the software up-to-date, but as of right now I'm a couple versions behind because I've got a lot of mods installed and the upgrade is quite a pain. I've had to turn on Admin authentication instead of just email auth, and still I'm having problems.

Today I realized that the last week's worth of posts have disappeared. WTF is going on? Has this ever happened to this board? Has anyone ever experienced this sort of thing? And if you have how do you stop/prevent it?

It's a youth forum with 45 users for crying out loud! Do people have no morals?

The Hip's Downie driven to perform

The Tragically Hip.

It can't be easy, being the Tragically Hip.

Think about it -- you're one of the biggest bands in Canada but barely make a dent in the American market, your back catalogue has been keeping cover bands in business for decades, and fans can just as easily switch on the radio as buy one of your CDs whenever they're in the mood to hear your music.

Of course, the glass-half-full way of looking at things is that you've also served as the soundtrack for countless real-life coming-of-age stories over the years, fans can recite the lyrics to your songs better than their own national anthem and in the pantheon of patriotic, proudly Canadian music-makers, well, you rank right up there.

But that's just our opinion.

"I don't worry too much about what we should or shouldn't be," Hip frontman Gord Downie told the Sun recently. "I remember reading something recently about Chris Murphy from Sloan ... saying he wanted his record to be a polarizing thing and that he wanted Sloan fans to fistfight over his record.

"He wasn't being literal, but you get the inference. He wants -- well, I don't know what he wants, but I thought to myself, at the risk of sounding immodest, that we already have that and we've had that for a long time.


"People, it's almost the second thing (they ask) when they meet someone from somewhere else in Canada, especially abroad -- 'Where are you from, and are you into the Hip?' And the answer will either be resolutely yes, or resolutely no."

That relationship between the Hip's music and their listeners has helped cement the band's status as one of the most influential and ubiquitous in the country, as well as allowed it to be judged on its merits and nothing else.

"It's not because of our sparkling personalities or because we're intrinsically Canadian," Downie says. "It's about the tunes."

For instance, he says,"My 11-year-old daughter just listened to that new Killers track, like, 44 times in a row. That's no different than what I do and what I've always done when I get something I like.

"You play it over and over and over again. You almost think, 'Well, this is indulgent, I can't possibly play this again, can I? No I am. I'm going to play it again, because it's the only thing I want to hear.' That's about all I could ask for."

Of course, Downie has had more than music on his mind since the Hip (Rob Baker, Johnny Fay, Paul Langlois and Gord Sinclair round out the roster) released their latest album, the Bob Rock-produced World Container. In addition to his solo work and poetry, he's also been working as a trustee for the Lake Ontario Waterkeepers, a group that advocates on behalf of residents of smaller waterfront communities that have been affected by industrial pollution.

And while that may sound like hard work, it's gotta be easier than the Hip's now-legendary live shows, which tend to find a seemingly-manic Downie delivering one his trademark enigmatic rants.

"I generally stagger off the stage," says Downie of the toll taken by his performance antics. "But if I'm staggering from some kind of moment of transcendence, where I feel like I've just been taken somewhere, then I don't mind. Generally, I can't escape it. I've tried different ways but I can't escape the punishment. The blues have to hurt, I guess."

See how badly Downie gets hurt when the Hip return to MTS Centre on Saturday night with opening act The Sadies.

....i urge you to get there early and enjoy the entire show. you are the lucky ones on the tour that get a better opening act in, The Constantines. I had the privledge to catch this band live twice, both in small bar venues and they were absolutely amazing. So don't skip the opener or spend all your time in line for beer for these three shows, get there early, stock up on brews and catch this band. anyone who is into the hip would most likely enjoy the cons. i love this band and wish i was going to one of these three shows instead of the hamilton one but i figure i'm lucky enough to be going at all. anyways, enjoy the shows and be sure to include your thoughts on the constantines in your review.
