Wrongfully convicted man free after 40 years behind bars

LUFKIN, Texas (AP) -- A 76-year-old man who spent nearly every day of the last four decades in prison walked free after a judge found that deputies extracted his confession to a 1962 robbery by crushing his fingers between cell bars.

After walking out of the Angelina County jail Tuesday with his wife, Robert Carroll Coney said he was not bitter.

"I'm going to try to pick up the pieces," Coney said. "If I was angry, what could I do about it?"

Coney was convicted of robbing a Safeway supermarket in 1962 and sentenced to life in prison. Many times he escaped from facilities in other states -- including South Carolina, Louisiana and Mississippi -- only to be recaptured each time. He was returned to the Texas prison system last year.

Coney said his identity had been confused with a man he had carpooled with through Lufkin on the day of the robbery.

State District Judge David Wilson, who dismissed Coney's charges, investigated and found that the sheriff of Angelina County at the time and his deputies used physical force to extract confessions, often crushing prisoners' fingers between jail cell bars.

When Wilson questioned Coney, the prisoner held up two twisted and bent fingers.

"I remember the sheriff well," Coney said.

He said the jailers, in addition to mangling his hand, threatened his life and scared him into confessing. Wilson's findings stated Coney probably did not see a lawyer until he stood before a judge in the case with then-court-appointed lawyer Gilbert Spring. Spring said he didn't remember Coney's case and told Wilson that courts frequently called attorneys in the 1960s to stand with defendants for no money.

"It really contains everybody's worst fears about what went on during certain darker years in this country," said Huntsville attorney David P. O'Neill, who worked on Coney's case.

Coney said he may consider a civil suit at some point but initially wants to focus on his family.

Holding his wife's hand as he left the jail Tuesday for their Dallas home, Coney said little about the ordeal.

"We're going home," Coney said.

This was a post that was dug up from 2 years ago. I knew nothing about getting concert tickets then, and since I've learned a whole lot. I'd rather not dig up old complaints, as I no longer feel the way I did when I posted this thread. And frankly, I'm more than a bit embarrassed. I'm removing the original post. Now I understand the need for a private club(hipbase) but here I am living in LA so when I bought IVL, i threw away the card as I figured that it had been so long for them to come down here, whats the sense? Well now i am a little upset that I didnt join-I tried to on the website but to no avail. What I am asking is if someone could pm me the san diego show PW. That would be awsome-I'm gonna go to both socal shows, I'm pumped-It'll be a little better then bring in the last row in wpg arena!!

This is unreal. This just blows my mind. Im all set to purchase a pair of tickets to the Hip's show in Seattle this October, when what do I find. "21+". !?!?!?!?!?!?!?! 21 fucking years old? Seriously what the fuck is up with this country and its goddamn conservative repression of youth. Twenty fucking one. I dont give a damn if I cant go to that country and buy their shitty beer, thats their problem, and a whole other issue that boggles my mind (thank Reagan for that). But to prevent an adult (Im 19 years old, not a fucking child) from seeing art being performed in a social venue is just ludicrous and appalling. I dont even want to drink your beer, I just want to see my favourite fucking band in the whole world.

Art is healthy. Music is art. Very positive things. Guns, cigarettes, and HARD drugs are very, very negative things. Funny, the stipulations attached to these detrimental activities are far less sweeping than seeing a god damned concert. So instead of seeing something productive and inspirational, I can go buy a gun and shoot stuff while I smoke cigarettes and crack. Thats what Ill do, crack. I hear theres no age restriction on that stuff.

Im 19 years old, not a fucking child (even though I may be giving that impression in my blind ((and completely justified)) rage). Ive emailed the venue, and am awaiting a response....Im seriously so angry I could...I could...nevermind...
