This has been eating away at me for days. It's just plain shocking...murders happen all the time but I've never seen anything so mindless and cowardly. I hope to god they catch the person who did this, and I'm almost hoping that one of these two kids had a secret double life or something so they didn't lose their lives for NOTHING.

Slain couple died in nature they loved
Camp counselors planned to marry in September

COLOMA, California (AP) -- They were young adults from America's heartland with a passion for the outdoors, backpacking, sailing and camping when they could, working together as counselors at a Christian retreat and dreaming that they would someday open one of their own.

Then, just weeks before their September 11 wedding date, they were killed in their sleep -- perhaps after taking in one last Pacific sunset under the open sky they loved.

They died instantly, each shot in the head as they lay in sleeping bags on a wild shoreline 2,500 miles from their homes and families, Sonoma County authorities said Friday.

By all accounts, Jason Allen of Michigan and Lindsay Cutshall of Ohio possessed outgoing physical natures to match their Midwest-grown spirituality. Friends, neighbors and family members recalled a couple who backpacked, sailed and rafted whitewater rivers, some day hoping to open an outdoor Christian camp like the one where they were counselors together.

"They both enjoyed that, and they just wanted to find some mission where they could reach young people for the Lord," said John Hart, a close friend of the Allen family in Michigan.

The couple's bodies were discovered Wednesday when deputies rescuing a stranded hiker spotted the crime scene from a helicopter. "It appears to be a terrible crime absent of motive, which is a concern to us," Sheriff's Lt. Dave Edmonds said.

There were no signs of sexual assault or robbery, and murder-suicide was ruled out because no weapon was found, authorities said.

"From all indications, the victims were very upstanding citizens, they were very honorable people. They had an absolute absence of enemies," Edmonds said. Police said they had no suspects.

Authorities said the slaying apparently occurred Sunday or Monday. Autopsies were being performed Friday.

Allen, 26, and Cutshall, 23, had been engaged for two years. Both were born into active churchgoing families. Allen's father, Robert Allen, was an elder at his Immanuel Baptist Church near the family home in Zeeland, Michigan; Cutshall's father, the Rev. Chris Cutshall, is pastor of the Fresno Bible Church in rural Ohio.

The couple was remembered as being dependable and prompt; people took notice when they didn't return to work at the camp as scheduled. But most of all, they were known for their religious conviction.

"As a young man, he gave his life to Christ and from that day forward, has lived a life dedicated to loving and ministering to others in the name of Christ, both through outdoor adventures and in every aspect of his daily life," said Alyn Goossen, a friend of Allen's from Michigan.

In California's Gold Country where the couple lived since June, they guided teens and college students rafting down the South Fork of the American River.

A few miles from where settlers struck gold 1848 in the Sierra foothills 50 miles east of Sacramento, the 15-year-old Rock-N-Water Christian camp is hidden off Highway 49, down a dirt road amid numerous other rafting operations.

Camp assistant Patty Salee said the couple provided "good, clean fun" for campers from around the country. Stacks of canoe paddles with Biblical verses written on them bear testament to the camp's theme. A small building houses shelves of religious books.

But Rock-N-Water closed for the season after the two disappeared, and campers were sent to other camps nearby, Salee said. "They were great kids, shining beacons of Christian young adults," she said.

Kathy Cutshall said Allen met her daughter while the two attended Appalachian Bible college in West Virginia. Allen, who graduated in 2001, moved to a farmhouse in Ohio to be near Cutshall after her graduation last year.

The couple's families gathered Friday at a Baptist church in Placerville, California. They were "grateful to God for taking our children home," said Chris Cutshall, who had planned to officiate his daughter's wedding.

He said justice would ultimately be served for the killers: "If not in this life, certainly in the life to come."

The couple had planned a garden wedding and a barn reception with a Christian bluegrass band. They planned to honeymoon in a tent on West Virginia's Gauley River, tent camping along the banks of some of the nation's whitewater.

But before they were to fly home August 22, family members said, they wanted to see San Francisco -- and take a side trip up the coast. Authorities believe the couple arrived last Saturday at remote Fish Head Beach in Sonoma County about 60 miles north of San Francisco, and apparently were camping overnight.

"We're sure they really enjoyed the sunset that evening," Chris Cutshall said.

JENNER, California (AP) -- Authorities in this picturesque coastal town continued searching for clues Saturday in the shooting deaths of a young couple, and some residents said they feared for their own safety.

"I'm terrified," said Julia Bechtold, 27, a waitress in nearby Duncans Mills. "It's just that we're so small, so anytime something happens, it seems so out of place."

Police have identified no suspects and no motive in the deaths of Lindsay Cutshall, 23, and Jason Allen, 26, a devoutly religious couple who were to be married next month.

Their bodies were discovered Wednesday on a remote beach, two days after they were reported missing.

Sheriff's investigators uncovered no new evidence Saturday.

"They're just combing the area and looking for leads from the public," spokesman Dave Huber said.

Cutshall and Allen were missionaries spending the summer as whitewater rafting guides at a Christian outdoor adventure camp in the Sierra foothills town of Coloma, about 40 miles east of Sacramento.

Autopsies completed Friday revealed the victims, who were found in their sleeping bags, had been shot through the head at close range. Authorities have ruled out a murder-suicide, and there was no evidence of trauma, robbery or sexual assault.

Meanwhile, people in this hamlet of barely 100 residents remained shaken by the deaths.

"It's crazy," said Keary Sorenson, 49, a volunteer at the town visitor's center. "In an hour, I'm going out to that exact spot where the murders took place for a seal watch. It's hard to imagine that something like that could take place here."

Jenner's one gas station, usually busy on summer weekends, was empty. Dennis Brown, who sells smoked salmon on the roadside, said business has been slow since the murders were reported.

"Who wants to come out here now?" he asked.

Bechtold said she was at the same spot on the beach last weekend where the bodies were discovered.

"I was telling my boyfriend how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful place," she said. "Now we see this is a place where someone who camps on the beach can get shot."

Im not a big fan but i must say she is extreamely talented...i was very impressed by her set last night. It was at the amphitheater and she played from ~9:10 -11:25...she even broke curfue!!

Does anyone know where i can find a setlist for the show??

The Movie Network is running Sarah Polly's "I Shout Love" at various times this weekend. The film opens with a three minute sequence set to Gord's "Boy Bruised By Butterfly Chase."

No word if they'll include Sarah's umm... "memorable" version of Courage as an extra.

Hello everyone,

I have tickets to the 2004-09-18 - Detroit & 2004-09-19 - Cleveland shows, and plan on videotaping them. I will be making these recordings available on DVD, just like my Wasaga show.

However, both venues state that they do not allow any recording devices. Has anyone been to these venues before, and can verify if taping will be allowed? I know that the policy is usually set by the band, and as such I have emailed The Hip for confirmation.

Furthermore, if any Hipbasers live in the viscinity of these venues, could you stop in and check it out? Get a contact name, number, etc.

So, I got a copy of “Roller Coaster Tycoon” out of a cereal box about two weeks ago, and I have to warn everyone: this thing is addictive!

I’ve become quite the king of Roller Coaster Tycoonery, but I’m having trouble stopping. It’s 3am, and I’m actually considering whether or not to build a Corkscrew Rollercoaster or a Log Flume Water Ride… something ‘aint right with this picture.

And while I’m here, let me tell you why I hate strip joints. Now, I’m a healthy, red-blooded, heterosexual male, and I like naked women just as much as the next dude. I just got back from a stag party at a strip joint… and let me tell you why I’m just not a fan.

First, I call it the “Mona Lisa Affect:” You’ve heard about it, you’ve seen it on TV, and you know it’d be kinda cool to see it in person. Once you get there, you can stare at her for five, ten, maybe even fifteen minutes. But eventually, you start to realize that it’s the same old, same old. Sure, it’s great and all… but once you’ve looked once… you’ve seen it. “Oh, you’ve got a pair? Well, so did the first twelve chicks.”

Second, the “Pan Handler Affect:” You ever walked down Elgin St., Younge St. or (Insert major drag in your town here) and had the street folks hit you up for cash? Well, the strippers manage to convert that charming “Spare some change?” appeal into a sexy look that says: “Oh, you’re sexy. I wanna sleep with you… spare some change?” Look honey, I know you’re after my cash, I know you look that way at all the marks, I aint buying: can you play the harmonica or write a funny sign?

Strip joints are like listening to TheoryOfaNickleCreed: just a waste of time and money.
