I have a few technical questions about the studio recorded version of Giftshop on Trouble at the Henhouse...

1. What instrument is providing the background ambient soundscape in the intro behind the opening guitar notes? Is it an organ? What effects are being used if any on it?
I know that on the Live Between Us version, Rob Baker is creating something on his guitar that is different than the studio recording. It has a lengthy delay effect on it. I'm not referring to that.

3. At 1:01 there is a high pitched repeating noise that then fades out over the next 8 or so seconds. It occurs again at 2:13. What type of effect/instrument would create that?

2. What pedal effects is Rob Baker using during the lead parts? Specifically at 2:00 to 2:09 and at 2:45 to 3:02 of the studio TATH version. I know in the Live Between Us recording, there is delay that isn't in the studio recording. Any other effects?

As a long time music buyer, I've faced a few different format crossroads over the years. In 1991 I moved on from my 400+ cassette tape collection when I bought my first CD player. I've still got all the tapes, although I haven't had anything to play them on in almost 20 years. I bought CD's for the next 15 years, slowing down around 2006 when I got my first iPod. I continued to buy the odd CD, mainly the Hip and a couple of other bands, over the past few years but in reality I've got almost 1000 CDs sitting in boxes in my basement that I rarely ever touch. I've never gotten into vinyl due to the fact that I gave up owning anything nice once I had kids, although purchasing a turntable might restore the last bit of "cool" that died in me when I got a mini-van. Over the past few years I've purchased all of my music on iTunes.

Last fall I signed up for a 3 month trial for Spotify. This was my first experience with streaming music (other than occasionally using YouTube) and I've greatly enjoyed it, to the point that I haven't bought any music over the past few months. My last purchase was Secret Path. This fact has created some minor guilt in me in that I know Spotify doesn't pay artists well and it's always given me a good feeling to support the artists I like. However, in the end I use the same self-justification that was widely used in the last decade by those stealing music (and I'm not completely above reproach in that area either, although it's been a very long time), "I support the bands in other ways by buying concert tickets and merchandise". I used to get great satisfaction out of browsing a record store and "owning" music but that feeling has been replaced by the joy of having everything I could ever want at my finger tips now on Spotify. I've yet to find any album that I've wanted to listen to not be available to me on this site.

I'm wondering what others are using to listen to music these days. Are people still buying CDs or MP3s? Anyone have a good recommendation for streaming other than Spotify? Anyone using iTunes Radio or Google Play? Outside of collecting vinyl, does anyone else see their days of music ownership being in the rear view mirror?

A few years ago, jeez maybe 6 or 7 actually, I ran across a video of The Last Recluse and Coffee Girl together. Gord rode hard to the lake with a girl who caught the ferry. I have been looking around for that video lately and can not seem to find it. Anyone have a link?

Why I picked this show....it's from my least favorite era of The Hip. On its release, I found Music@Work to be a really odd album. Loved the first half, indifferent to disliking the second half. Many years later, still sort of the same view.

Maybe it was partially my view on the album, or just life at the time, but when the tour rolled around it took me awhile to decide to go, which was really odd because I'd seen countless shows since UTH. Add in there, I'd never been a fan of the Bourbon Tabernacle Choir so Chris Brown and Kate Fenner were not a big deal for me.

I did see shows, actually two, but not with great seats. Left sort of "meh, OK". On the other hand friends who saw shows were consistently blown away. As the years have gone by, always wondered maybe it was just me and have wanted to track down a full show. Listened to this show from the Fillmore just a few days ago and was bit confused about why I walked away a bit indifferent 17 or so years ago.

Can anyone direct me please and thank you...

First off, I love this song. Was a favorite off MMP back in June and then grew to love it more after seeing It live this summer. And then listening to the Kingston version dozens more.

But I've always wondered what the hell it means. I can't understand what "what Blue" means in the context of this song. Anybody have any interpretations?
