  Help on Hip jersey sizing!

Hello everyone, I am considering buying a Hip jersey from Maple Music. For all those Hip jersey collectors, or even folks with only one, how does the sizing run? I'm 5'10" and about 180 lbs, and usually where medium shirts/polos etc, sometimes large if the shirt run smallish. I have plenty of hockey jerseys from my hockey playing days, but I don't want something I am swimming in, but something I could actually wear...any insight on this would be most helpful!

There are two significant comments made by band members over the past nine months that would lead one to believe that the Hip may not bookend their catalogue with MMP. In June, around the time of the release of MMP, Rob Baker stated during a Sirius XM interview that there is a companion “shadow” album to MMP that was recorded with Kevin Drew and Dave Hamelin which contains songs that were deemed “too personal or two awkward” to release at that time. Then, in October, during the Mansbridge interview GD said, “I’ve got two or three or four records in the can. A record the Hip are working on.” Mansbridge followed up by asking, “So we could hear more from the Hip?” to which GD responded, “Yeah."

Thus it is apparent that new material does exist. However, we don’t know what state of completion/”record readiness” these songs are in. Was the material the Hip were working on in the fall simply polishing up the MMP leftovers? Or were they recording brand new tracks? Did they get a chance to truly finish what they were working on? This led me to think about whether I would want new Hip material if it was not able to receive the near obsessive lyric-writing scrutiny that Gord is known for or if it didn’t have enough time to cook in the studio oven. Is there a legacy to protect and would potentially releasing an album that didn’t receive the same attention as past albums (due to GD’s health challenges) diminish this legacy in any manner?

If the Hip was to call it a career with MMP, their legacy would remain relatively unblemished. UTH through MMP is a run of quality albums that is arguably without parallel in rock music. To be certain, there are peaks and valleys that exist in there but the dips are still miles above sea level. Every Hip album contains some songs that are representative of the best rock songs of the year in which the album was released. While there are some misfires in the catalogue, there is almost nothing that I would label ‘filler’.

There are a lot of examples of great bands whose last album was one album too many: "Zeppelin’s "In Through the Out Door" (ignoring Coda here), The Clash’s "Cut the Crap", whatever Neil Young's last/latest album is, among others. If the Hip were to release one final album and it fell short of the high bar set by past records, would I even care? Do I want to hear every single thing they’ve got tucked away in the vault regardless of state of completion (a small part of me says, “Hell yeah!”) or would I be happy with MMP being the swan song and the band retiring with a string of albums that they can be very proud of? I'd be interested in hearing others thoughts on whether you want to hear everything, warts and all, or whether you would prefer that a high level of quality control is exerted. Or, some happy medium?

Some of you may remember the interview that my girlfriend and I conducted with Rob last fall. I posted it on here in the Dougie Stardust thread but I wanted to create a thread just for my girlfriends blog. She does a lot of blogs on music history as well as reviews of shows we have been to and other events such as RSD. The Rob interview is posted on the website as well as some other Hip related blogs. The full interview with Rob will be out within a few months, which will be posted there.

I noticed that since a lot of us seem to be from Ontario, we attend many of the same shows, so maybe you'll be at some of the same shows or events we review, or you can go read about it if you missed.

The Tragically Hip received another award Sunday night for the broadcast of their August concert.

Their live concert special, “The Tragically Hip — A National Celebration,” ended up winning six Canadian Screen awards in all.

“This past year has been a difficult and emotional one, for all of us, but there’s been some joy and inspiration in it as well,” said guitarist Paul Langlois, in accepting the award for best performance in a variety or sketch comedy program Sunday night.

“The tour we did last summer was tough for all of us to do for obvious reasons, especially that last show of the tour in Kingston, which was broadcast, was particularly difficult to get up for. Fortunately when we hit the stage that all fell away and it was a unique night and there were a lot of feelings circulating out there — kindness, empathy, sadness, hope, celebration and love, a sense of community, maybe for some even a shared sense of Canadianness.

“I just want to share with everyone who watched that night that none of it was lost on us.”

The concert special also won for “best live entertainment special.”

The special broadcast also earned awards for Alex Nadon and Tyler Pigeon for “best photography in a variety program or series,” David Russell for “best direction in a variety or sketch comedy program or series,” Brent Clark for “best production design or art direction in a non-fiction program or series, and Jay Vicari, Peter Gary, Jon Erickson, Lee Moro, and Mark Vreeken for “best sound in a variety or animated program or series.”

...back in the fall, during his incredible interview with Peter Mansbridge.

Since then, we haven't really heard anything more about this from anyone in the band or around it. Or at least I haven't.

Is a new album even possible now? Hopefully, but I wonder.

Will we eventually see the shadow album of Man Machine Poem? Or perhaps those leftover songs form the starting point.

It seems awfully quiet in Hip land these days and maybe there's good reason for that, that I just have a hard time coming to grips with.

I hold out hope that while the touring band may be retired, the band who has written hundreds of incredible songs is not done yet.

Thoughts? Hunches? Rumours?
