I recently finished both Robbie Robertson's biography Testimony and Springsteen's biography Born to Run. Both were great reads and although I would consider myself much more of Springsteen fan than a fan of The Band, it is Robertson's book that I enjoyed more. I would recommend this to any music fan, whether you are familiar with The Band's music or not. Robbie has a phenomenal memory for conversations and events that happened over 50 years ago and is a raconteur of the highest order. There are stories of stolen diamonds, mobsters, guns, girls and drugs. Encounters with many historical figures, such as Jack Ruby, Salvador Dali, David Geffen, Bo Diddly, Jimi Hendrix, Martin Scorsese, and Muddy Waters form part of his story, although none nearly as important as being Dylan's best musical friend in the 1960's. He was there when Dylan recorded "Like a Rolling Stone" and was part of Dylan's band during one of the most seminal moments in rock history when Dylan decided to go electric. He details the abuse he and Dylan took on that first tour and has some great anecdotes about Dylan and the Beatles and the time spent recording the Basement Tapes with Dylan. He wraps up his his story in 1976 with the filming of the Last Waltz documentary.

Overall an entertaining read, and if you need a Hip connection, Gord wrote a poem about the The Band called "The Band, Upstate" in Coke Machine Glow and of course the Hip have covered the Band's "It Makes No Difference" and "The Weight" in which Paul takes lead vocal on the third verse and kicks some serious ass.

One of my most prized possessions in high school was a VHS copy of the April 1990 Misty Moon show in Halifax, which aired on MuchMusic. This was my first exposure to the power of live Hip before ever seeing the band in person, as it was for many of my friends at the time (and possibly a few of you on this board). After seeing this show, I was hooked as a Hip fan. I believe it stands as the Hip's first televised performance.

The old Misty Moon is being torn down this week in Halifax. It hasn't been the Moon since 1995, when it was sold and converted to the Discovery Centre (a interactive science learning centre for kids). I was in downtown Halifax last night and as I was walking by it, concrete and rebar now fully exposed, I looked into to where the stage used to sit and in my head I could hear Downie say, "It's beautiful to be here in the Misty Moon this evening. Cabaret Show Room and Lounge. Paris of the Maritimes..."

But what do you think Mr. Baker's best guitar riff (in the studio) was? I guess I will bias you all with my claim- I still think 'Bring it all back to me' (which actually has 2 solos by him) is my favorite. But there are a lot of good ones. Thoughts?

The Hip were part of an answer of Jeopardy the other night. The answer went something like 'Eddie Vedder of this band gave a tribute to Gord Downie of The Tragically Hip etc.'

Disappointed that Gord Downie or The Hip weren't the question, but that the question was What is Pearl Jam, but oh well.

I'm changing where I post these into Global Forum Announcements, hopefully so our little club can get some more visibility here!

Recorded shortly after the Live Between us in Detroit, this is one of my favorites. The band was touring in support of Hen House and was firing on all cylinders. Highlights for me are the opener Gift Shop, a crazy long 15 minute rant filled Meridian (The wreck of low inome housing!), Don't Wake Daddy, Wheat Kings, Nautical (Sharks guitar solo) and a personal favs Escape is at Hand (which may have been been known as Stereo at he time) and Inevitability of Death which in my opinion is a perfect song featuring the varying talents of the band both lyrically, vocally, and stylistacally. I so wanted this to be the last song they played at the final show...
