I always wondered who actually called them.

Sam Roberts makes it clear why he is a genuine rock star

LEWISTON — Here’s the thing with this review — going into Sam Roberts’ show at Artpark on Wednesday night, this reviewer was already a big fan of the Sam Roberts Band. So there’s a certain bias going into what you’re about to read. So let me give you some objective points about the concert:

• Sam Roberts and his band played for about three hours.

• There was not one, but two encores.

• There were approximately 3,000 people at Artpark, and the concert bowl was still full after the second encore.

Those are the facts — that should clue you in to the kind of show that Roberts gave Lewiston on Wednesday night and allow for the review of the performance you’re about to read to make sense.

Sam Roberts is big in Canada. He should be big in the United States, too. And he’s getting there. His fans, who filled Artpark’s concert bowl-on-the-gorge Wednesday night, are passionate. They sing every word of every song, even the new ones. His male fans lift their beers in salute. His female fans shriek about activities I can’t write about here (he is, apparently, very good-looking, if a little short).

Rock-star good looks aren’t the reason he should be all over U. S. rock radio, however. It’s his songs. They are really, really good. He’s not an artist who writes one kind of song well, but only that one kind of song. Wednesday, he took a ride that moved from straight-up rock to tight alt-pop to psychedelic, meandering jam sessions, bringing his audience with him through the whole trip.

At Artpark, Roberts:

• Cast a folk-pop spell with 2008’s “Magic On My Mind.”

• Had a crowd of thousands singing and clapping along to 2002 hit “Brother Down” — and I mean everyone knew the words.

• Taught the kids to dance to rock and roll with 2008’s big single, “Them Kids.”

• Played an epic, 15-minute version of “The Gate” and then played a 20-minute psychedelic jam out of “Mind Flood,” two songs off 2006’s “Chemical City.”

• Inspired a boatload of cliches from this writer because it really was a damn good show.

Even at an outdoor venue like Artpark, Sam Roberts set himself apart, even visually. Tuesday’s Gov’t Mule concert had that band surrounded by smoke machines, giant backdrops and wildly dynamic light shows. With Roberts, it was stripped down — aside from some color changes, the entire light show consisted of lights on the band and bright audience lights shining on raised hands. Oh, and a field of lighters during mellow parts of songs. There was no backdrop either — just the natural setting of the

Niagara Gorge. When you’re a consummate showman, you don’t need more.

Smiling, waving, reaching out and grabbing hands, Roberts is a performer with Springsteen-level stage presence. And he does have that aforementioned way with the ladies — before he kicked into “Dead End,” he threw it up to the ladies.

“This one goes out to the ladies in box 10, who really got it going on tonight,” he said, which, of course, was met with a high-pitched round of approval.

I honestly wish I could cite some critical flaws in the performance — maybe that a note was missed, or certain songs came off a little flat. But it wasn’t that kind of show. Roberts was too engaging, and his band was too energetic, to hold things back.

I was talking to one of the many Canadians at the show, a lovely girl named Aurora from Kitchener, Ont. While she wasn’t a passionate fan coming into the show, she was familiar with Roberts through a few of his radio hits. So different from passionate fans — again, this reviewer included — she was able to offer an objective point of view.

During Roberts’ “Mind Flood” I asked her if, based on what she had heard on the radio, she would have expected this kind of show.

“Even his radio songs, you knew there was something going on beyond what you heard,” she said. “You knew there was something deeper. But I never expected this. It’s amazing.”

Today I was down on my knees rooting through the poetry section of a used bookstore when I found a book by my grade 13 English teacher. (Yes, we had grade 13 in Ontario, back then. That's not the point.) It was published 3 years ago. (That's not the point either. Shut up.)

This guy is a good enough poet to call himself a poet in the company of poets, without embarrassing himself and those around him. He was also one of my favourite teachers, back then. I was knocked dead to find his book.

One of his poems describes the reams of paper that come into a school, only to get recycled and forgotten, and the hope that a few sheets do something important.

So I wrote him a letter, c/o his publisher, and said hey, some of them do. Because finding his book made my day.

That's my inspirational post for the year. I will now return to being needlessly negative.

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, Manitoba (July 31) - A traveler aboard a Greyhound bus repeatedly stabbed and then decapitated his seat mate, pausing during the savage attack in central Canada to display the head to passengers who had fled in horror, witnesses and officials said Thursday.
A 40-year-old man was arrested after the grisly slaying late Wednesday night aboard a bus en route from Edmonton, Alberta, to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sgt. Steve Colwell told reporters.
Police apprehended the suspect early Thursday as he tried to escape from the bus about three hours after the attack, Colwell said.
Authorities said a motive had not been determined. They declined to identify the suspect or the victim, and provided few details about the attack.
But passenger Garnet Caton said the victim, who appeared to be about 19, was sleeping with headphones on when his seat mate suddenly began stabbing him as the bus traveled a desolate stretch of the TransCanada Highway, a dozen miles from Portage La Prairie.
Caton, sitting just one seat in front of the two men, said he heard no exchanges between them prior to the violence.
"We heard this bloodcurdling scream and turned around, and the guy was standing up, stabbing this guy repeatedly, like 40 or 50 times," Caton said from a hotel in Brandon, Manitoba, where he and other horrified passengers were taken.
Caton said the driver stopped the bus when he became aware of the savagery going on aboard and passengers scrambled off. He said the suspect appeared to be methodically cutting into the victim's body.
"When he was attacking him, he was calm ... like he was at the beach," said Caton. "There was no rage or, or anything. He was just like a robot stabbing the guy."
The bus driver, Caton and a trucker at the scene re-boarded to see what was happening.
Caton said he saw the suspect had the victim on the floor of the bus and "was cutting his head off and pretty much gutting him" with a large hunting knife.
The attacker turned toward them and the three men quickly left the bus, blocking the door as the attacker slashed at them through an opening. The three secured the door to prevent the man from fleeing. Caton said the driver disabled the vehicle after the attacker tried to drive it away.
As the three guarded the door with a crow bar and a hammer, the attacker went back to the body and calmly came to the front of the bus to show off the head.
Fellow passenger Cody Olmstead said the man "dropped the head and went back and started cutting the body." Olmstead said the man later taunted police and dropped the head in front of them.
Greyhound spokeswoman Abby Wambaugh said 37 passengers were aboard, many watching the on-board movie "Zorro" when the violence erupted.
"You're sitting there enjoying your trip and then all of a sudden somebody gets stabbed. I imagine it would be pretty traumatic," Colwell said.
He said the actions of truck driver, bus driver and Caton probably prevented anyone else from being hurt. They "were very brave."
The victim had been on the bus since Edmonton. Caton said the attacker boarded the bus in Brandon, Manitoba, about 80 miles west of Portage La Prairie.
The suspect had been on the bus about an hour and initially did not sit near the victim, Caton said.
"He sat in the front at first, everything was normal," Caton said.
"We went to the next stop and he got off and had a smoke with another young lady there. When he got on the bus again, he came to the back near where I was sitting.
"He put his bags in the overhead compartment. He didn't say a word to anybody. He seemed totally normal," Caton said.
Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day called the attack bizarre, but did not discuss details, saying he did not want to jeopardize the investigation

I got my copy of The Hold Steady’s new CD “Stay Positive” and (although it’s a superb album) I immediately noticed just how ‘muddy’ the sound is on it. Tried it on my home HiFi, in the car and it’s definitely muddy. There's 3 bonus songs on my edition, for some reason all on the one track so I ripped and loaded the track into an editing program to split the songs up.
It was then I saw just how loudly this disk has been (I presume) mastered. The waveforms are meant to have points and stuff (they do on other stuff I’ve edited), but with this it’s just wacked right up and all the points chopped off. The result seems to be no dynamics and just a wash of guitar – and it distorts my PC speakers.
Not good. I checked a few more recent rock album purchases and it seems that this seems to be the trend. Not great IMHO.
I am guessing that this is one of the reasons why vinyl is still popular – you cannot master vinyl as loud???

For anyone interested the drum store down the road from me (Daves Drum Shop) actually has the Kit Johnny Fay used during the Grey Cup for sale.

If I drummed or had a place to put it I would have bought it....but instead I just stopped in to stare at it for 10 minutes....it doesn't say anything about the grey cup on the website but the guy at the store told me that's what Johnny told him.
