Just heard on Edge 102.1 in Toronto, they are having a survey to determine if the Hip are still the Kings of Canadian New Rock. Personally, I think the torch has been passed from Rush to them a while ago, and its going to be a long time before anyone assumes that role from the Hip. Today's music all sounds the same, and everyone's own records sound the same from one to the other. There is some great Canadian talent out there, but no one with the musical and lyrical talent and longevity that the Hip have enjoyed. They will be the kings until they're done as a band, and even after that, it will be hard to match, maybe not their commercial success, but certainly their effect on Canada, Canadian culture and Canadian music.

Some masterpieces reveal themselves slowly until finally it all seems so obvious.

Given that we exist amid a pop culture landscape where only the instantly inviting and immediately gratifying is considered worthwhile, creating a work of art that only reveals itself after the listener has invested considerable time and effort is a risky proposition. But then, not everyone is meant to hop the of-the-moment gravy train.

"In Between Evolution" is one of the Tragically Hip's most complex and difficult albums. It takes a while to get into. But once you do, it owns you, fully and completely. It's a heavier, grittier affair than "In Violet Light" and "Music @ Work," all dense twin-guitar interplay, throbbing, ominous rhythm section rumblings and singer Gordon Downie's at first obtuse, later disarmingly and openly poetic lyrics.

Opener "Heaven Is a Better Place Today" sets the tone, as the wall of guitars and relentlessly driving groove frame Downie's tale of loss and grieving. "Summer's Killing Us" is skittish, its hook coy and peeking at you from around the corner. Downie sings wonderfully here, his open-throated wail during the choruses completely vulnerable, the sound of a man worn down past the point of caring to save face.

There's nothing weak here. It all hurts, is painful in a way that is utterly compelling.

Anybody know anything about this? I haven't read about this much. I've searched the hipbase for "ching" and nothing turned up so I don't think this has been brought up before... I also searched the net to see if this was mentioned before and couldn't find nothing. But I think it's kinda weird nobody has wondered or asked about this before....

So I'm gonna post this anyway and if ya already know this then let me know (or if i'm flat-out WRONG)

The marking on the back of the Fully Completely CD case seem to be of the I Ching, some Chinese Book Of Changes wisdom sort of thing going on. The only thing about it is the I Ching is sets of 6 lines and they alternate between complete or broken lines to mean different things. Anyway, the only drawback is that on the back there are 4 (symbols?) of I Ching and the two middle ones are separated.

DOES ANYBODY KNOW IF I AM WRONG OR IF THIS IS ALREADY KNOWN?[/b]

I was at the Concert in Sudbury, thinking that I would enjoy an amazing concert, similar to Ottawa's amazing show, but was saddly mistaken.

Not only did bigger guys push their way to the front, but they became quite confrontational and abrupt towards younger audience members, who were also trying to enjoy the amazing performance.

I have to say I could have gotten very lost in the crowd had it not been for my boyfriend keeping me focused on the stage and how amazing the songs were being song by Gordie....

I love the Hip and actually got to meet Gordie and Paul at the end of the evening....that was an amazing oppurtunity and helped me forget about the idiots in the crowd...

so i was at my brother's friends lacrosse games yesterday and saw the most amazing thing ever:

there was some kid playing on the court between periods and he'd be running then all of a sudden he'd be floating on the surface. at first i thought he was a witch, but upon further inspection he was wearing these shoe, similar to these ones:

As of late I have discovered that a lot of people do not understand the proper procedure for completing a successful B&P transaction; so I decided to write this letter, and include a few important points.

1. Wait at least 2 weeks before asking if a show is available.

3. Email the person with the show you want and ask if they are willing to do a B&P for you. Remember you are asking a stranger for a favour; be nice.

4. If the person with the show agrees to your B&P request, verify with them what type of media they require. This means brand of discs, recording speed, and in the case of DVD's +R or -R. If the trader doesn't specify a detail, ask them again. If they still do not provide an answer, choose the fastest, name brand media. (Sending a no-name disc increases the risk that you may not get what you want back. Cheap discs are just that, cheap. And failures can occur when burning, rendering your disc useless. Sending slow speed discs wastes the traders time. I just received eight 1X discs. This will take me 8 hours to burn, as opposed to 2 hours with 4X discs.)

5. Before you do anything else, reply to the message and tell the trader that you acknowledge your acceptance and are preparing the materials for immediate shipment.  Let them know what your estimated timeframe is, and how you can be contacted.  And be sure to WRITE DOWN and save the name and details of the B&P somewhere.

6. When you send your package out, be sure to include a SASE (bubble) mailer as well as proper return postage (attached) and a note telling me which show I am burning for you.

7. Be patient. Traders have lives and burning shows requires time.

Hey Guys,

I know I owe you a long update with what I have been doing, and that will come soon.

I have a new house in Montreal, and what I need is an IVL poster for the bare walls. I remember seeing it at the music store, but they are long gone. Someone must have it.. it was landscape, 'normal' poster size, and was basically the cover. I want it for Baker's art, I would crop the top and the bottom and mount just the print. Can anyone help out? lemme know.

It sounds like there's going to be a fall Pearl Jam tour leading up to the election in the states. Today on the band's message board 10 Club members were told to make sure that their email adresses/memberships are current. At least one band keeps their fans posted on current news...
