superfreak has passed away today from natrual causes

I red about a Secret Hip show for a Birthday party (possibly Pauls), members of HDRC were there and I believe that the Hip played A shitload of Covers!!!! And old school stuff.This show was just a few weeks ago?

I was watching a few concerts the other day and I was wondering what happens when the hip walk off stage after the main set before they come out for the encore? Are they high fiving back there or pounding gatorade? The encore songs are usually picked before the show even starts, just look at the sound guys setlist before the show starts. Are they kissing wives or what? I know some of you have been backstage just what the heck is going on back there?

So what other Canadian bands should I be listening to? I've really enjoyed the Spirit of the West albums that I ordered last week...the Rheostatics, of coures...I think the Unicorns are Canadian...

Any lesser known bands to check out?

OK, help me out here. What exactly IS the Hip's status in the USA? Are they an obscure cult band? Or one of those bands that doesn't crack the charts but still has a respectably large fan following, is well-known to critics, etc.---in other words, a band that most musically-aware people have heard of? How many records do they sell in the US? And is their popularity growing, receding, or stable down south?

OK, just curious if I'm the hip fan on this forum that lives the furthest south? I'm in Maryland, outside of D.C. Any other Americans out there that live further south????

Terrell's Tuneup: Dark visions of the Hip

The Tragically Hip is one of those bands that is consistently strong, even over their 20-year history. With their muscular guitar attack and the passionate vocals of Gordon Downie — whose voice suggests Michael Stipe with more testosterone — these Canadian road warriors virtually always satisfy.

The Hip’s new album, In Between Evolution, is a dark but inspirational work, if not quite their best. That honor belongs to Day for Night, their 1995 effort.

No song on the new one quite matches “Nautical Disaster” from Day for Night, a terrifying you-are-there account of a nightmare. But surprisingly, the one on the new CD that comes closest has a lighthearted title, “Gus the Polar Bear From Central Park.” With its distorted guitar hook and plodding beat, the tune has lyrics that seemingly get into the mind of a zoo animal to create an offbeat treatise on isolation and paranoia. “What’s troubling Gus overhearing conversations/that it’s because you’re too either them or me/when it’s either them or it’s us anything that moves and/everything you see is something to kill and eat.”

The idea that the world has turned into a colder, harsher place permeates this album. The ominous song “Meanstreak” creates the image of a town invaded by “strangers”: “The sssh sound of the bottoms of their boots/on the tops of the grass/as their haywagon/rolled past.”

War images pop up everywhere. “As Makeshift as We Are” is built around what sounds like a long lost Bachman Turner Overdrive riff and starts out, “You do the combat math, I’m the war artist/You can’t take your shots back, I have to watch them miss.”

“If New Orleans Is Beat” has one of the prettiest melodies the Hip has ever played, but it keeps with the basic theme of a world turned wrong. “No one will give you a thing these days/they’d rather kill it or throw it away/you don’t ‘do’ dark American streets so/if New Orleans is beat … where’s that leave you and me?”

Macho, jingoistic, new-country star Toby Keith inspired “It Can’t Be Nashville Every Night,” according to Downie. “He said, ‘We are what we lack’/and this guy’s the autodidact/stares into the glare of them TV lights/It can’t be Nashville every night.”

The obliqueness of the words combines with the passion of the band’s playing to create a foreboding mood that’s hard to shake.
