I bought a bag of Chex Mix for the first time in a couple years, and I have a question. When did they replace the peanuts with breadsticks and nasty rye circles? My opinion of the snack has been permanently soured. :x

There is an eerie silence in the night sky, broken only by the now far too familiar buzz of an RCMP chopper that is circiling the city, enforcing the no-fly zone. It's been up there 72 hours, and it'll stay up there until noon tomorrow.

There are cops EVERYWHERE. OPP in full riot gear, RCMP in full red uniforms. They're on rooftops, on corners, and in cars.

The protestors are camped out on our campus, at city hall, and right now they're covering the lawn in front of Parliament Hill for a big Bush Bash all nighter by the Centennial Flame... picture Canada Day with a whole hell of a lot more anger.

Entire city blocks are blocked off (Imagine Front Street to Maple Leaf Gardens or Battery Park to Times Square simply closed down)

Now, I’m a proud Liberal, I’m not a Bush supporter, and I was embarrassed by some of the protestors here in Ottawa. Bush is no Hitler, and if you think he is, then your own “axis-of-evil” is way out of whack. Amongst the Soviet flags, the Che T-shirts and the socialist banners, I kept hearing about the “fight” against Bush.

Here’s how I “fight” Bush and his philosophies: I hold the door open for women, even if they’re wearing Burka’s. When I see two men holding hands, I don’t scoff or mutter under my breath. And, when it comes time to vote, I actually do. I support candidates who feel social and civil rights are important to them, and causes which are important to me.

Call me crazy, but I think there are better ways of demonstrating your opposition than tossing rocks at McDonalds.

Goodbye to one of Canada's greatest journalists, explorers and historians. I have read many of his books, from The Mysterious North to The Last Spike, and I am never left without an absolute sense of awe for the depth of his knowledge and his conviction in this country of ours.

Not just an esteemed author, but a consummate Canadian. He will be missed.

Hi guys...I just got word that we (The Hugh Dillon Redemption Choir) are having the pristine pleasure of opening for The Hip at Copps, along with The Weakerthans.

Needless to say, I am so excited...I hope to meet many of you there!

LBs 2nd apology to the rest of the hipbase
(Enjoy it cuz it happens very seldom, lol)

The multitude of PMs and emails I have received point to a disturbance in the force, a disturbance that must be quelched and should've never had reared its head. I thought the rest of the hipbase might've enjoyed reading it. I thought it was utter bullshit. She reeled me along, basically told me really cool (romantic/epic) backgrounds and stuff, and then, in the end, merely left me hanging for like 2 weeks. I didn't know what to do about it and I had spoken with others from the hipbase here who had told me that she told them the same stuff. Why a former lover of Gord would come on the hipbase and tell fans such information is beyond me. One argument people have made is that she told me not to say anything and I violated her trust. She told several others the exact information and then told me that I was the only one she had spoken to. So, whatever.

Anyway, I can deal with people's mixed opinions about how I shouldn't've put it on my site or I should leave it on my site, I can deal with her emailing me saying that I violated her trust and that stalkers on the Hipbase were going to get Gord and I can even deal with people saying I am a "bad fan" for posting something (about the lyrics, which my site is dedicated to) that could potentially embarass Gord... but when Lance says "not cool" then it isn't cool. I deleted the page from my site and told Lance if he feels it appropriate than he can delete that entire thread. I was just relaying what I had heard and I did my best to remove any inkling as to this woman's identity along with the majority of the personal stuff, but if I am a "bad fan" for posting something like that, as she said, then what does that make her?

In closing, I'm sorry if I offended, insulted or disappointed anybody from the hipbase, or Gord, or the hipbase itself. But, even if it floats in the realm of fiction, I thought it would've at least been an interesting read.

Jus' wondering (and if your opinion is that this is a Dumb THread, I don't wanna hear about it) ...

in your mind, what is the status of "Forest Edge", "Problem Bears", "Ultra Mundane" and "Oh Honey"? Are these part of the Hip Canon, or are they mere B-sides floating around as "Hip-tangents", if you will.

I think the HipClub's quick release of PB and UM bestowed on them more "official" status, than the late, almost ignored addition of FE. Also, the fact that Throwing Off Glass survived from the Men with Brooms soundtrack while Oh Honey never resurfaced gives the latter a strange not-wanted-on-the-voyage status.

Let's put it this way ... when your making lists (mental or otherwise) of Hip songs, do these four make the list?

I had just bought the camera the evening before, so unfortunately, i was thrown into the ring without having a practise photo session.

I only got off about 6 that came through without a serious amount of blur to them, so here they are.

I'm presently at the 35:00:00 mark of life without cigarettes, and the withdrawal symptoms are quite the force to be reckoned with.
I feel like I've eaten two caps and a stem, if you know what I mean....

I knew it would be a shock to my system when I finally deprived myself of the standard 30-Marlboros-per-day (all "reds", no less), but I am truly amazed by the tenacious grip that nicotine can have on both the mind and body of its willing minions. I feel like a wild animal caged in my own skin.

It would be best to completely remove myself from all social contact for another day or two - some guy here in the office just asked me how the (Xavier) Musketeer basketball team will do this year. I just blurted "They'll struggle." and kept walking.

Maybe I'll fashion a sign that warns passers-by:
