I won! In fact, both my wife and I won the chance to donate $50 to Almost Home in exchange for a limited edition Hip touque and 2005 Juno Awards programme.

Since my wife will never wear the touque, and I can't really afford a $100 donation right now, I'd like to give a fellow board member the chance to donate to Almost Home and get a hat for themselves.

I just made my donation, and there didn't seem to be any method of verifying that I was actually a winner. I think the only thing that us winners got was a link to the item on MapleMusic's web page. I'll send that link to the first interested person who posts here, as long as you promise you're actually going to make the donation.

If for some reason that doesn't work, I'll make the donation on your behalf, if you PayPal or mail me the donation plus the MapleMusic shipping fee. I'd rather not see this chance to donate to Almost Home go to waste.

Hi people,

I'm just wondering what the general impression you guys have of the armchair cynics, mostly people who have seen them opening of Hugh Dillon on his recent tour, but also just any thoughts you have on them.

The lead guitar player is sort of a foundation of the victoria scene in that he puts out some really awesome recordings for only $25/hour. My old band recorded our CD with him and he did an awesome job.

Just curious how they're being received, their single "Bang" is getting lots of airplay as far as I'm aware. I don't know, do they strike you as typical 604 records fodder? (that is, a load of shit)

For all of those with large boot collections, what do you use to keep tack of your collection? Do you use a program like tape tracker, or just any database program?

My wife and I and two of our friends saw Sam Roberts play in Detroit last night (9/16). They played at the Magic Stick. It is a small club located over a restaurant and a bowling alley. When we came in we took a stroll through the restaurant hoping that Sam might be in there. As luck would have it Sam, his band and the road crew were at a large table in the back. We said hello to everyone and told them how we were all looking forward to the show. We didn't stay long because they were near the end of their meal. I did get a bit of scoop from Sam. He said they had already recorded their next CD and they were getting ready to mix it. So it shouldn't be too long before it is released.

Upstairs in the club was gathered a loyal and energetic group of fans. I'm guessing about 300+. I had a feeling a large percentage of them were Canadians. Sam and the band came out at 10:30 PM and played a hard rockin' two hour set that included two encores. The last encore Sam came out by himself to play an acoustic version of a new song. Unfortunately, I didn't catch the name of that one. At one point in the show, between songs, Sam said, "There is a long Canadian highway that runs from Montreal all the way to Windsor". A huge roar erupted from the crowd. Then Sam said, "And don't forget Detroit". Another roar erupted, but not as loud as the first. I was surrounded by Canadians! In fact, the guy next to me had driven from Hamilton, Ont. to be at the show.

The main set included three new songs, "Over the Bridge" (?), "Bootleg Saint", and "With a Bullet". They were all hard rocking songs. My favorite was Bootleg Saint. Of course, the band played all the best from the last CD.

After the show we met Josh, the new drummer, and Dave Nugent (guitar). We kept waiting, hoping that Sam would come out and speak with us too. The club was almost empty and the stage was torn down. I told the bouncer who was standing at the backstage entrance that we weren't leaving until we spoke with Sam. He went backstage, found Sam and asked him if he would speak with us. A few minutes later Sam appeared. We spoke with him about his writing and the large amount of airplay his music is getting in Detroit. Sam was down to earth and he gave us some insight into what inspires him in his writing. Over all, it was a great night!
