The Tragically Hip is among over 50 Canadian recording artists participating in “A Decade of Music Portraits” at Art Gives Hope. One autographed edition will be up for auction between March 7 -17th and twenty-four more unsigned limited editions are currently available for purchase. Quantities are rare, among all The Tragically Hip fans only twenty-five fans will receive these exclusive prints.

I know it's a Friday night and what am I doing home but did anyone catch Larry King Live tonight? Sir Paul, his wife, and the premier of NFLD Danny Williams were on. They were discussing the seal hunt. It was quite a lively debate.

Hip fans unite - we need to come together to choose the ULTIMATE hip song to pitch to Jian Ghomeshi and the National Playlist Panel!

If you don't know what the National Playlist is, take a listen, it's on Monday to Friday on CBC Radio one, at 11:30 local time, or you can listen just once a week on Saturday nights at 9:00

THE NATIONAL PLAYLIST is a weekly top ten list that crosses genres and eras and reflects the way people listen to music these days. These are the songs you need, sorted, sifted, debated and defended by musicians, critics, producers and you, the listening audience

Here's how it works: Each week, a new top ten list is introduced. You get to vote on what song you think should stay. The four tunes with the lowest number of votes will be bumped off to make way for new songs. And what about those new songs? All week, while you're voting, Jian Ghomeshi and his panel of experts will debate a selection of new songs fighting to get on the list.

Anyway, a few weeks ago, Van Morrison Fans, or "Vanatics" held a discussion, and then I assume a vote, on which is the greatest Van Morrison song ever, and which one should be picked to represent them on TNP.

In closing, I think that this is the ideal place to have that same discussion in regars to the Hip, as I think that they most certainly belong on CBC's National Playlist. I was gonna pitch a Hip song myself, but I am coming to you because I cannot decide which song to choose!

It's time to Vote on something that matters people!!!! :music

my buddy actually entered this contest and said if he won he was going to throw a huge party with ALL the winnings this summer. Live bands, Kegs, port-o -potties... you name it. Im trying to help him get some votes...he needs it with all the ladies entered!! help this great cause!

I thought this might be an interesting topic for discussion. Have you noticed common misconceptions that get printed and reprinted about the Hip? Or things that casual fans think that you know just aren't true. A couple are coming to my mind right now, but I know there are many more...

1. Gord makes up stories during songs. I've heard this from other fans, radio DJs, etc., but it isn't true. I haven't heard a "story" at a Hip show ever! The stories that people have heard are from concerts from the very early years (Killer Whale Tank, Double Suicide etc.), and these were clearly not improvised, as similar ideas popped up at multiple shows. Today Gord obviously does "rant" during songs, but these are often poems or song-fragments that he seems to be working on at the time, and I don't think they're often improvised, since he uses many of the same rants time and again, until they wind up as a song or a poem.

2. Some songs were born out of jams, particularly in the middle of New Orleans is Sinking (eg: Nautical Disaster). If this were true, it would be really cool, but I don't think it's true. When Nautical Disaster (or Fire in the Hole, or whatever else) was played in the middle of NOIS, it was clearly already a structured (rehearsed) song, with chord changes, a melody, and lyrics. They may have been using NOIS to try it out in a raw form, but it certainly wasn't just a song created out of a jam. Same with Escape is at Hand for the Travelling Man (fans called it "Stereo" at the time).

These misconceptions certainly don't hurt the band's image, so I'm not eager to debunk them or anything, but it's just interesting how these rumours persist for such a long time.
