I am a long time Hip fan...my first show dates back to 1989 @ the old Ontario Place Forum (the one that spun around in circles). I have seen roughly a 100 shows since and likely keep going to hear certain older "b' type tracks if you will. I get annoyed with Courage, Merridian, Music @ Work, and other "hits" that have been played to death live.
Last night's show at the Landmark was possibly the worst live performance of the Hip I have ever seen. Their setlist was absolutely terrible, and their chemistry was completely off (their might be a personal factor involved). I realize that every band is entitled to have a "bad night", but as a fan driving six hours to see a show it is easy to get one's expectations up. I just wonder what the Hip would do for a live show if they took out Blow, NOIS, Courage, Meridian, and Grace Too? I wonder if they could ever advertise a show as being strictly for the "B" tracks...I'd love to hear Fight again, Pigeon Camera, I'll be leaving you, Emperor Penguin, etc. I know that they have brought out some of their old stuff for this tour, and have tried to appease fan requests....but not last night (yes they did play daredevil mind you). I know I'll be back, but, hope it's a night where courage gets the night off.

So, its supposed to hit here tomorrow night...
I'm not sure what I should do. I think I'm going to just...continue living. I've never been through a storm like this before, so it should be an experience. Here's hoping for minimal damage. :thumb:

Bruce Allen a man of the tasteless

Have you heard? Bruce Allen recently said something shocking. No, not his controversial remarks regarding Canadian immigrants–that's nothing. If you want something truly outrageous, flash back to his Vancouver Magazine profile this past spring entitled "Bruce Almighty". Try this on for size: "I get pissed off that too many artists are given the label 'Great' when they haven't earned it.…I do not believe the Tragically Hip are great. I believe they're a Canadian act that wouldn't even be in existence today if it wasn't for Canadian content. So when I sit there and hear about the New Pornographers being great, or Neko Case being great–I go crazy. What, you earned 'Great' because you sold out the fucking Railway Club? I don't get it."

Well, I guess he's right about one thing: he don't get it. But wait–who is this guy? Some kind of music promoter? Didn't he have something to do with Vancouver's late-to-the-party new wavers Strange Advance? Oh, yeah, and Loverboy? Upon further investigation, it turns out that Allen is also a radio personality. He calls himself "the voice of the people". Yes, he's a regular Joe Lunchpail–if your lunch pail happens to be made out of solid gold.

The fact that a zillionaire should host a segment called Reality Check doesn't surprise me. Money buys wisdom and according to Allen, he just says what we're all thinking. Really? Who's "we"? I get the impression that Allen fancies himself a little blue around the collar, hanging with the truck drivers and dry wallers at the Boo Pub talkin' NASCAR and meat.

In reality, though, he is simply championing the status quo: backslapping golfers, smooth-jazz soccer moms, and the white, uptight, Gore-Tex set. You know, "the people".

So when this Foghorn Leghorn without feathers equates musical greatness with sales and popularity, I wonder what the rest of his life is like. Is every meal a Quarter Pounder With Cheese washed down with a Starbucks Frappuccino? Are his IKEA Billy bookshelves lined with nothing but Danielle Steel and John Grisham? Does his DVD collection look like the new-release section at Blockbuster? And what about the paltry few musical genres that exist outside of corporate arena rock? For Allen, Musical Youth's 1982 hit "Pass the Dutchie" must have been the high-water mark for reggae. Is this really the reality we're supposed to be checking?

Okay then, let's close the Railway Club. Shut 'er down. Nothing worth listening to has ever been played in a small club, certainly nothing great. Charlie Parker was a chump. CBGB was one big loserville. Neko Case, you've been warned–start filling Wembley Stadium or quit calling yourself "Neko the Great". I'm not trying to tell you your business here, but would a colourful headband kill you? New Pornographers, I'm just going to throw this out there: David Foster. Seriously, think about it.

Let's face it, bigger is better. Go big or go home. And so on. It's a bold reality, a telling-it-like-it-is kind of reality, as concise as a bumper sticker and just as incisive. Or maybe somewhere it's always 1983, where everybody's working for the weekend, where you've got the eyes of a stranger, and even though it might cut like a knife, it feels so right. Wait…did I say that out loud or was I just thinking what everyone is saying? Or is it the other way around? Maybe I'm the one that doesn't get it. I'm pretty sure that's how Allen would see it. Hey, that's great with me.

Woah! Did I just detect the Cookie Factory guitar chord in Sharks from Music@Work? If so, awesome, but it also means we may never get to hear West Wind Cookie Factory as an actual song.

I just noticed that it's still on the tracker, and I didn't download it before.

The Hip to play Akwesasne

AKWESASNE -- The Tragically Hip will be in concert Saturday night at the All Inn Lounge on the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation, presented by Concerts International.

Tickets are $50 each and are nearly all gone, said Jason Cree, owner of the 2,400-seat building at 439 Route 37, next to the Bear's Den Truck Stop.

The opening act is Joel Plaskett Emergency, which will play a 90-minute set, followed by a 30-minute intermission. The Hip take the stage at 10 p.m., Cree said.

Best known for their smash hits "At the Hundredth Meridian" and "Ahead By a Century," the band has continued to attract legends of fans and win over critics with acclaimed albums.

Beginning with their self-titled first release, through "Road Apples," "Trouble At the Hen House," "Music @ Work" and "In Between Evolution," The Tragically Hip are known for their captivating storytelling and intense live shows.

Cree said snagging such a popular band and putting the entire show together took less than a month.

"We were trying to find big-name talent to make an appearance and started looking around on the Internet."

He saw that The Hip had shows set for tonight at Memorial Auditorium in Burlington, the Landmark Theatre in Syracuse on Thursday and the Auditorium Theater in Rochester on Friday.

"We saw they were going to be close by, so we called the band and talked to them," Cree said. "It was the right time at the right place, and everybody said yes."

The Tragically Hip, according to an entry on Wikipedia, got its name from a skit in the movie "Elephant Parts" by Mike Nesmith of The Monkees, who took it from the song "He's So Cool" by Carolyn Mas.

The five-man band from Kingston, Ontario, formed in 1983 and still features front man Gordon Downie, bassist Gord Sinclair, drummer Johnny Fay and guitarists Paul Langlois and Rob Baker.

"World Container," the band's 10th full-length album, was released in the United States in March and features the tale of a hockey goalie, "The Lonely End of the Rink," and "Family Band."

The Tragically Hip have won numerous Juno Awards, the Canadian equivalent of the Grammy Awards in the United States, and were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2005.

This will be the second concert held on the reservation in recent months.

The classic Canadian rock band Lighthouse performed there this summer after that show's promoters were denied permission to hold the show in Massena.
