Stars visit Lake Louise in support of clean water charity event

Sharon Witcombe had to take a second look to make sure she wasn't seeing things when Alec Baldwin skiied past her.

"It was strange because the other night, my husband and I had just been talking about how funny the show 30 Rock is and suddenly Alec Baldwin's standing two feet away from us," said Witcombe.

The Surrey, B.C., native had finished a run at Lake Louise Ski Resort when she spotted the actor, but admitted she was too starstruck to say anything him.

"I would have just put my foot in my mouth," she said with a laugh.

Baldwin was participating in the final day of this year's Waterkeeper Alliance Sports Invitational and Fundraiser, which began on Thursday at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise.


The 50-year-old star of such films as Glengarry Glen Ross, The Departed and the critically acclaimed TV comedy 30 Rock competed in a giant slalom race along with such celebrities as ER star Juliana Margulies, former Beverly Hills 90210 actor Ian Ziering, Olympic gold medalist Al Joyner, actor-director Chad Lowe and Sopranos wiseguy Joe Pantoliano.

Baldwin was in good spirits and hammed it up in front of his fellow competitors and an Entertainment Tonight camera crew.

He was recently named best actor in a comedy series at the 2009 Golden Globe Awards and told the media that the show had been picked up for another season.

"We're really happy about it," he said. "It feels great."

The Tragically Hip's Gord Downie was scheduled to compete in yesterday's slalom race but cancelled because of a hockey-related injury he sustained on Thursday night.

Downie was hit in the face with a puck and received a couple of stitches to close the wound near his eye.

A significant portion of the funds raised from this weekend's charity event will go towards Waterkeeper initiatives in Canada.

"I don't know how the economy will effect this year's fundraiser," said organizer Robert F. Kennedy Jr. "But we'll probably raise about a million dollars."

The non-profit Waterkeeper Alliance was founded by Kennedy in 1999 as an umbrella organization to give scientific, legal and policy support to Riverkeeper, Baykeeper and Soundkeeper environmental associations. · GREAT LAKE SWIMMERS haven't wasted much time since the release of their critically acclaimed third album ONGIARA in the spring of 2007. After TONY DEKKER and company finished playing across North America and Europe to great review, it wasn't long before they found a new location to write and record their follow up album LOST CHANNELS, set for release March 31 on Nettwerk.

When photographer and regional historian Ian Coristine heard the broadcast of the GREAT LAKE SWIMMERS' performance on CBC's Vinyl CafŽ, he sent the band an invitation to explore and be inspired by the gorgeous Thousand Islands region of Ontario. The setting on the St. Lawrence River was chosen for the recording project, and with the guidance of Coristine, the band was able to record in a number of acoustically unique spaces within the region, including Singer Castle on Dark Island, near Hammond, NY (<!-- w --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.singercastle.com">www.singercastle.com</a><!-- w -->); the historical Brockville Arts Centre in Brockville, ON (<!-- w --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.brockvilleartscentre.com">www.brockvilleartscentre.com</a><!-- w -->); and at St. Brendan's Church in Rockport, ON. The "Lost Channel" is a passage of water in the Thousand Islands where mysterious disappearances occurred during a battle in 1760.

Musically, the new GREAT LAKE SWIMMERS songs see influences ranging from early REM, Gram-Parsons-era Byrds, and the Faces, to the acoustic side of Neil Young. It has elements of deceptively simple roots-rock, while still maintaining the haunting indie-folk and spatial qualities that GLS has become known for. 12-string Rickenbacher guitars, banjo, pedal steel, tight harmonies, and stripped down arrangements are all in the mix on LOST CHANNELS.

The band lineup on LOST CHANNELS consists of songwriter Tony Dekker on vocals, acoustic and electric guitar, and piano; Erik Arnesen on banjo and electric guitar; Greg Millson on drums; Darcy Yates on upright and electric bass; and Julie Fader on flute and backing vocals; with help from Bob Egan on pedal steel guitar and mandolin; Serena Ryder with vocals on "Everything Is Moving So Fast"; and appearances by Erin Aurich on violin; Mike Olsen on cello; and Paul Aucoin on vibraphone.

Great Lake Swimmers are set to tour North American this March and April. Starting with a string of eastern Canadian dates in early March, followed by Western Canadian dates in late March and then touring through America in April.

To kick off the release the Swimmers will be playing a few early shows in Brooklyn and Manhattan.

First Impression: "meh".

Its like they tried to fit 4 different songs in 1 song. Production isn't awesome (which is weird considering how much I love Eno) -- it seems like bonos voice should be louder. Anyways -- this one's gonna flat line I think. here's hoping for a better second single to be ushered out quickly -- kinda like coldplay did with viva la vida.

Anyone interested in resurrecting this?

For those of you who don't know, here's the idea - I record a guitar track, someone else records a bass track, someone else records a vocal track, send them to each other, yadda yadda yadda... we have a song.

There was a little bit of interest last time around. I recorded a few but couldn't upload (I still don't know why). Then my wife popped out two little boys and EVERYTHING got put on the backburner. Now we're all a little older, a little wiser, this could be a little fun. If anything, it might help fill the time until there's some new album news.

Anyone in?

Damn, what a beautiful song. The movie it was written for is just as good. Mickey Rourke's performance is both amazing and heartbreaking. It'll be a freakin' crime if the dude doesn't win the Oscar for this flick. Apparently the song will be included on Bruce's new album as a hidden track.

Sorry if this is all old and common knowledge. I tried to search for it, but came up empty.

Why did they only release a part of the Nov 23/1996 concert on this CD. I think 4 tracks are missing from the main set, and none of the encores are there. I was quite disappointed with that info when I found out (of course, live Hip performances are much easier to get now, including "That Night In Toronto"). I would love for this album to be re-issued with the full performace.

Any reason why this was cut? Has there been any talk of an extended reissue (or has there ever been one)?
