That time of year again fellas!! :jump

I was thinking of possibly doing it in the traditional ROTO style this year instead of Head-to-Head. What do y'all think?

In case any of you aren't familiar with Rotisserie-style scoring, here's a description:

In a Rotisserie League, fantasy teams are ranked from first to last in each of several statistical categories. Points are awarded according to these rankings, with the most points in each category going to the highest-ranked team. These points are then totaled to determine the overall standings. The team highest in the standings at the end of the season is declared the winner.

The benefits to ROTO (imo) are:

1) it rewards owners for season-long performance as opposed to just week-by-week performance; a well-constructed team can still win a championship despite having lots of September injuries or despite having key players sitting out of the lineup on teams that are out of MLB playoff contention so the organzation can evaluate September "callups".

2) it will ease any pressure to make reluctant add/drop transactions in effort to win your weekly matchups...especially late in the season.

Sometimes a Smoke is Just a Smoke

WASHINGTON -- Drink and drive and it's grrrrrrrr-eat! Smoke pot and your flakes are frosted, dude.

So seems the message from Kellogg, which has decided not to renew its sponsorship contract with Michael Phelps after the Olympian was photographed smoking marijuana at a party in South Carolina.

That's showbiz, of course, but the cereal and munchie company had no problem signing Phelps despite a prior alcohol-related arrest. In 2004, Phelps was fined and sentenced to 18 months probation and community service after pleading guilty to driving while impaired.

The silliness of our laws -- and the hypocrisy of our selective attitudes toward mood enhancers -- needs no further elaboration. Even so, things are getting sillier by the minute.

Richland County (S.C.) Sheriff Leon Lott has now made eight pot-related arrests based on the snap that shot around the world. Seven were for possession and one for distribution, after deputies used warrants to enter the house where Phelps allegedly was photographed.

Phelps may be next.

In an earlier column, I gave Lott the benefit of the doubt, suggesting that his hands were tied given the laws of the land and South Carolina's political climate. I retract the benefit.

Sheriffs, though elected and therefore political, have great latitude as to what crimes they pursue. In a state that recently ranked among the most dangerous in the nation, one would think South Carolina's law enforcement officials have better things to do.

Indeed, they do. In our peculiar obsession to track down the Willie Nelsons, Rush Limbaughs, and now Michael Phelpses of society -- nonviolent, victimless imbibers of drugs -- we've actually made society less safe. That's the conclusion of 10,000 cops, prosecutors, judges and others who make up the membership of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition.

Howard Wooldridge, LEAP's Washington representative, is a former cop and detective who lectures civic clubs and congressional staffers on the futility of drug laws that reduce public safety by wasting time and money. He points to child pornography as just one example.

As of last April, he says, law enforcement had identified 623,000 computers containing child pornography, including downloadable video of child rape. Only a fraction of those have been pursued with search warrants, thanks to limited resources and staff shortages. What's worse, Wooldridge says, is that three times out of five a search warrant also produces a child victim on the premises.

Another example: Last year Human Rights Watch reported that as many as 400,000 rape kits containing evidence were sitting unopened in criminal labs and storage facilities. Between the Los Angeles Police Department and the L.A. County sheriff's office, nearly 12,000 kits were unopened, according to an NPR report in December.

Arguments against prohibition should be obvious. When you eliminate the victimless "crime" of drug use, you disempower the criminal element. Neutering drug gangs and cartels, not to mention the Taliban, would be no small byproduct of decriminalization. Not only would state regulation minimize toxic concoctions common on the black market, but also taxation would be a windfall in a hurting economy.

No one's saying that drugs aren't dangerous. Alcohol and tobacco are also dangerous.

And no one thinks children should have access to harmful substances, though they already do. Parents who recoil because their child became an addict should note that prohibition didn't help.

What prohibition did was criminalize what is essentially a health problem -- and overcrowd prisons. In 2007, there were 872,720 marijuana arrests in the U.S. Of those, 775,137 were for possession. South Carolina just added eight to this year's roster.

The greatest obstacle to drug law reform is public fear and politics, says Wooldridge, as he set off to give eight presentations on Capitol Hill Thursday. "I've had staffers tell me that to even call a hearing will get you un-elected."

Which, perhaps, explains why Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va. -- the only congressman to even approach the subject recently -- has tackled the drug problem through the issue of prison overcrowding. Webb has held two hearings before the Joint Economic Committee on U.S. drug policy and incarceration costs. This year, he has promised to push for a blue-ribbon commission to study why the U.S. has more people in jail than any other country.

The answer -- and the solution -- seems clear.

I'm not convinced that all drugs should be legalized, but we should at least put prohibition on the table to take another look. In the meantime, Sheriff Lott has some 'splainin' do to.

Hidden Tracks: The Tragically Hip are Just That

Pitchers and catchers report -- one of the best phrases a person can read. This is my favorite time of the year. Spring training has finally arrived. The unmistakable sound of the bat-hitting ball is bliss. Can summer be far behind?

And this year is better than most. The Phillies are reining World Champs. The winter didn’t seem as harsh as it usually does. It’s not something we Phils fans had many chances of saying. Thankfully, I was alive for their first crown.

As much as I love music, baseball is my first love. Just getting the glove out and having a catch is my idea of fun. Hell, just thinking about tossing the ball gets my heart going a little bit faster.

Just as there is nothing like the anticipation of a new baseball season, a close second is awaiting the arrival of a favorite band’s latest album. When I hear that Bruce Springsteen or Better Than Ezra have new music coming out I eagerly await its release.

When Springsteen’s “Darkness on the Edge of Town” came out, I was standing in the record store, waiting for UPS to deliver the shipment. I had to buy 3 copies -- my buddies had to work, so it was my duty to get the first ones.

So when I heard that this week’s band is coming out with a new disc in April, I felt compelled to write about their previous one. The Tragically Hip should be better known then they are. And if you doubt me go out and grab “World Container.”

From “Yer Not the Ocean”, the opening track to “Last Night I Dreamed You Didn’t Love Me” this Canadian quintet hits all the right notes. They find unique ways of expressing eternal ideas.

They bring a northern sense to their music. And it’s perfectly expressed in “The Lonely End of the Rink”: a song about that’s about misfit love. Or hockey…I haven’t really decided which yet.

"The Kids Don’t Get It” is what rock is supposed to be; heavy guitars, and lyrics that you have to think about more than once to get the message. “In View,” “Fly” and the title track are unlike most music you have heard.

So while we wait for the Hip’s next album, here’s the link to their website so you can get a sense of who they are. Click around and get a feel for their sound. You’ll get to hear a lot of their music and I know you’ll quickly agree that the kids might not get it, but you will.

"Heather Ross, 18, was crowned "Queen of the Furrows," an annual pageant that takes place at the Dundas Agricultural fair. The contestants sport evening wear and are asked impromptu questions, but in a unique turn they must also exhibit a high degree of skill riding a tractor, and plowing.

"Most of the girls don't know how to ride a tractor until the day before, when we get training. It's the most Island thing possible," said Ross.

Ross started a Facebook group called "Beauty versus Industry" earlier this year, which encourages members to define beauty in their own terms.

There's no contradiction between her fashion industry campaign and being crowned Queen of the Furrows, she said."

I'm a native of Oswego, New York which lies on the south eastern shores of Lake Ontario. My house is probably less than 3 miles from the Nine Mile Point Nuclear power plants (insert radiation deformity joke here) just east of Oswego. Those lyrics have got to be referencing the cooling tower at this site, right? Having been written and recorded at the BathHouse, they'd be looking south across the lake all the time.

Ohio woman pleads guilty to exercising 73-year-old husband to death

CHARDON, Ohio - A woman has pleaded guilty to reckless homicide in Ohio for exercising her 73-year-old husband to death in a swimming pool.

Police in Middlefield, Ohio, said surveillance video showed 41-year-old Christine Newton-John pulling James Mason around the pool by his arms and legs and preventing him from leaving.

Mason had a heart attack June 2 after the extended swim session.

Newton-John pleaded guilty Thursday and faces up to five years in prison.

Police Chief Joseph Stehlik says Mason's death was investigated because of previous complaints that he was abused.

Mason was a longtime friend of his wife's family.

He knew her as John Vallandingham before she had gender reassignment surgery in 1993 and changed her name. They married in 2006.
