hi all.

i have 5 seats for the show at skydome. they're pretty brutal seats (in the 500s) but its the hip nonetheless. anyone want em or know someone who would? face value, obviously.

"Another aspect that makes Downie one of the better writers around is his ability to take different influences from all works of art, including literature. "Christmastime in Toronto" is a prime example of this as he quotes from Chekov: "Always the wind and the persistent snow / Gets in your eyes and your mouth and every fold of your coat". Musically, it's fairly tame and radio-friendly, a bouncy rock song that fits the format despite the false ending. "Willow Logic" is more artistic as Downie sings in parts as the narrator alternates, speaking other portions. While not entirely a horrid song, the simplicity and structure does seem to detract from the lyrics. The fade out is much longer than needed, making for a rather boring music-and-nature-sounding minute. "Pascal's Submarine" has a certain happy pop feeling along the lines of the Hidden Cameras or Polyphonic Spree. Featuring a number of backing harmonies, harmonicas and horns, the group effect is its best asset."

Things wound up that night at Lee's Palace, where Gord Downie and the Country of Miracles headlined before starting a North American tour in support of their new album, Battle Of The Nudes.

P.E.I.'s Nathan Wiley opened with a set of appealing alt-country before Alun Piggins won over the packed house of hosers and Hip yobs with a high-energy show full of great and funny songs from his new disc, to be released on Fred Eaglesmith's label later this summer. One soon-to-be-classic is about falling in love in Sudbury at quarter to two in the morning. He sings it with Oh Susanna on the album, but the Lowest Of The Low's Steve Stanley filled in admirably at Lee's.

It was questionable whether the impatiently chanting Hipsters would be satisfied with Downie's very un-Hip-like solo songs, especially when played by the likes of the Dinner is Ruined's Dale Morningstar, Dave Clark and Dr. Pee (plus Julie Doiron). But the Miracles wisely performed harder-rocking versions of the new material, and Downie's elastic voice provided the link for the fans, who lapped it up like it was just another, if unusually quirky, Hip album. In the end, everyone went home happy.

  Lee's Palace June 7th

Just got back from Lee's Palace. This was my first true Gord solo experience. I highly recommend anyone to check Gord out if he's in your area. The music really comes alive when you see it up and close. Alan Pigguns and Nathan Wiley were great bands as well. Well chosen opening acts for Gord. As for Gord's set, this is what I remember in no particular order:

HOCKEY IS KING: On his just-released second solo album, Battle Of The Nudes, The Tragically Hip's Gord Downie pays homage to late hockey great Garnet "Ace" Bailey, who perished in the 9/11 World Trade Center attacks.

A song called Steeplechase ends with some great play-by-play about Bailey, and a post-game interview with him. Bailey scored a key goal in the Boston Bruins' run for the 1972 Stanley Cup.

"I got that from a vinyl record this friend gave me, which was just basically the summary of the Bruins' championship season, '71-'72," Downie told The Sun.

"It had all these great little vignettes ... That was a huge goal for (Bailey). I wanted to hear his voice. And when I heard his voice I found it very chilling, and Dale (Morningstar) did some work to kind of edit it down to what you hear, with the music underneath. And I just thought, yeah, in light of losing him in Sept. 11, I found it somehow a little reminder of something he did once."

Downie has a soldout NXNE solo gig tomorrow at Lee's.

well i saw Gord tonight at Dundas sq. and it was awesome. this is the first real solo show i have seen (the white ribbon concert doesnt really count because he played only 2 covers) and i thought it was great.

we got there early at 4:45 and we were the first ones at the railing. All Systems Go came on at 5 and a bit of a crowd showed up. they were somewhat tolerable, but nothing to get excited about. by the end of their set, it looked like there was a huge crowd, but i could be wrng because i was in the front row and couldnt see all the way to the back.

the Salads come on next and they were horrible. this is the band that most of the people were there to see and i wasnt impressed. im sure some people think they are great but not me. what kind of band has a guy on the stage dancing around for the whole show? and the guitarist was being so bitchy about the rain - there was a huge crisis before their set about some mist blowing onto one of his speakers and he wouldnt stop complaining and trying to shake the water out of it.

cuff the duke was next, and they actually were pretty good, although anything would look good after the salads.

gord came on with the green shirt and bruins hat. dave clark rode in on his bike. he showed up with a yellow rain coat and a bike helmet just before setting up his drums. during the show he talked about how he delivers the NOW magazine in toronto. kind of weird. dale's amp and guitar looked like he found them in the garbage. kind of funny actually how the amp was held together by duct tape.

they band led off with Into the Night, followed by Figment. they both sounded great. gord played his Strat, which was strange to see. next was Christmastime. Awesome! the band also played chancellor, canada geese, 11th fret, pascal's sub, elaborate, yer possessed, vancouver divorce and we're hardcore. everything sounded GREAT!! gord sounded AWESOME on his Strat, surprisingly, playing the key parts of some songs.

gord did a bit of ranting (during elaborate and something else) and it was quite funny. at the end of the show, he thanked his band josh, julie, dave, dr. pee, dale.....and celine (pointing to a huge sign on the other side of yonge street advertising celine dion's new perfume).

after the show, gord signed some autographs for fans.

cant wait for Saturday night!!
