Edmonton teacher wins Poetry Face-Off

TORONTO - Edmonton high school teacher Timothy Cusack is this year's winner of CBC Radio's fourth annual Poetry Face-Off.

"It's quite humbling to say the least ... the competition was tough," Cusack told CBC Thursday afternoon, shortly after his win was announced. All the finalists presented major competition for his entry, Play Tag with the Moon (Five Acts of Play), he said.

Cusack's poem progresses from a man recalling childhood memories to his suffering through life tied to a desk to the raising of his own children, all the while referencing pop culture, including Star Wars and Jack Nicholson in The Shining.

This year's theme – "play" – was a wonderful topic, said Cusack, who teaches at Louis St. Laurent Catholic School in Edmonton. "It gave me a lot of latitude as a writer."

For his winning entry, Cusack enlisted the help and advice of his students, who went through the poetry writing process along with him and will share in his celebrations. Fellow poets around the Edmonton area also lent their support. The region is "a hotbed of poetry writing in Alberta," he said.

Though Cusack called Play Tag with the Moon "a challenging piece to work on" and something which he "sweated and fretted" about, he believes that everyone should try writing a poem and getting up in front of others to share it.

"Poetry is ... giving and sharing of oneself. Every time you get up on a [microphone] in front of people, you are putting yourself out there," he said. Poets "give of ourselves, our thoughts, our feelings."

Now that he's the 2005 Poetry Face-Off champion, Cusack said his next goal is to read poetry with Tragically Hip frontman Gord Downie, who completed Coke Machine Glow – a solo album/poetry project – in 2001.

Cusack himself released a poetry collection entitled Just West of East in 2001.

Held from January through March, the Poetry Face-Off is a national competition that hosts poetry slams in bars, coffee shops, bookstores and halls across the country. This year, 60 poets from 13 cities across Canada faced off with their poems before live audiences, who voted for the winners via phone or on the official website. The regional winners went on to compete in the national finals.

Moncton poet and journalism student Jesse Robichaud placed second in the annual event and Charlottetown poet Tanya Davis placed third. Other finalists included Christian Bök, the Griffin Poetry Prize-winner and author of the experimental Eunoia collection.

"It's so important for spoken word to get out there," Cusack said. "Come out of that poetry closet."

anyways, i've been trying to find a version of pigeon camera where gord sings overtop the solo at the end...some of the lyrics are:

thats about all i can decipher from that cause the solo drowns out some of what he sings. if anyone could tell me what show that's from, it'd be much appreciated.

Yankees' Gary Sheffield has confrontation with fan during Red Sox' 8-5 win

BOSTON (AP) - The New York Yankees got into another scuffle with fans on a testy night at Fenway Park. This time, Gary Sheffield was in the middle of it.

Sheffield was fielding Jason Varitek's two-run triple along the right-field fence in the eighth inning of Boston's 8-5 victory Thursday night when a fan swung a short uppercut in his direction, appearing to graze the side of the slugger's face with his right arm. "I just felt something hit me in the mouth," Sheffield said. "I don't know if he hit me or not, it felt like it. I thought my lip was busted."

After Sheffield picked up the ball, he shoved the fan before throwing the ball back to the infield. Another fan tossed a beer at Sheffield, who whirled around with a cocked fist but restrained himself.

He shouted in the face of the first man. A security official quickly jumped over the three-foot wall to separate the two.

"It could have been worse if I didn't hold my composure," Sheffield said. "I almost snapped, but the thing is I thought about the consequences."

The fan was ejected from the ballpark but not arrested.

"It's just a baseball game," Sheffield said. "To get punched in the mouth, you don't expect that in a baseball game."

During the 2003 AL playoffs, two Yankees players got into a brawl with a Red Sox groundskeeper in New York's bullpen. Relief pitcher Jeff Nelson and outfielder Karim Garcia were charged with assault but agreed to a deal last October that called for the charges against them to be dropped in six months.

The near-fight between Sheffield and the Boston fan was the latest problem between fans and players at a sporting event.

On Nov. 19, players and fans exchanged punches in the stands near the end of a Pacers-Pistons game in one of the worst brawls in NBA history. The mayhem left several people injured and prompted a police investigation.

Last September, the Texas Rangers got into a fight with fans in Oakland, and Rangers reliever Frank Francisco was arrested after throwing a chair into the stands that hit a woman and broke her nose.

Edgar Renteria's RBI double in the eighth broke a 5-5 tie, and Boston took two of three from its rival to even the season series at three games each.

Randy Johnson gave up three homers for only the 12th time in his career, and Red Sox manager Terry Francona and hitting coach Ron Jackson were ejected after questioning calls by plate umpire Greg Gibson.

Johnson left with the score 5-5 after seven innings and Tom Gordon (0-1) fell behind before getting an out. Johnny Damon led off the eighth with a single and scored on a double by Renteria, who had made the last out for St. Louis in Boston's sweep of last year's World Series.

After an intentional walk to David Ortiz, Varitek hit a ball down the right-field line that hugged the curved wall and led to all the trouble.

"We have to give Sheffield a lot of credit for restraining himself the way he did," Damon said.

was in town today & interviewed on the local radio station and mentioned how he was listening to it all the way here on his drive from edmonton then the dj asked him what time he tuned in and ron said when the hips courage was on is when he tuned in....pointless, but cool

Somebody explain to me these "Plus" walkways, I hear you guys have. Seems to be an interesting concept in civic design, but I'm not quite clear on what they are.

I know you've got 57 of them in town, but are they major glass enclosed bridges linking buildings in the core, or more like mall-bridges in between department stores? Are they long, Jestson's style walkways, or simple spans across downtown streets? And if you've used them, do you use them often? Are they practical? Something worth spending taxes on?

So my sister got me to buy tickets to the Oasis concert in Vancouver for her and a few of her friends, I bought them straight away as soon as the pre-sale started and I've gotten her tickets that are just about as far away from the stage as possible.

So I'm thinking that they screwed over the pre-sale people and will release better tickets later? I'm going to keep checking back. The question is, if I buy other tickets, will ticketbastard let me cancel my previous order?

I thought here would be a good place to ask, since we all battle with ticketmaster pretty frequently.
