Ok, this is going to be a weird topic, but I just got back from a friend of a friend's house and he claimed he bought a whack of Xanax off the net for not a whole lot of money. He showed them to us, and I've never seen the real product but they looked like them when I did a GIS after I got home.

We've all gotten the annoying spam emails but I've never known someone to actually order them. He said he filled out some lame survey and that was his 'consultation' and he was approved for the drug. Don't forget, we're in Canada and this sort of stuff is supposed to be harder to get, no?

Is there even a remote possibility that this is actually Xanax or is he taking something that could really harm him? He said he's already taken some with no ill effects; well, other than what it's supposed to do I guess. And no, I didn't take any nor do I plan to. I'd be surprised if I see him again anytime soon actually but I'm just curious.

Also, do these jeans make me look fat?

Trailer Park Tories? Harper, Ricky cousins

Harper, TPB’s Ricky share a little DNA

Stephen Harper and Robb Wells, better known to Canadians as Ricky on Trailer Park Boys, may be distant cousins. But the Conservative leader isn’t exactly a fan of the television show that features lots of gratuitous gunplay, swearing and marijuana grow ops.

The top Tory’s election team was tickled to discover that Mr. Harper and Mr. Wells share the same great-great-great-great-great-grandfather, George Dobson.

"We had a good laugh," said William Stairs, Mr. Harper’s communications director.

Mr. Stairs doubts Mr. Harper has watched the show.

"He doesn’t have a lot of time and when he does watch TV, it’s either hockey or stuff that he watches with his kids (ages seven and nine)," Mr. Stairs said Friday. "I really don’t think it would be high on the list."

There are similarities between the two, according to one Trailer Park Boys insider.

"They both want to get plastered on power," said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Part-time Halifax genealogist Carol Dobson worked out the familial relationship between the actor and the politician.

"They’d probably be fifth or sixth cousins," she said. "It’s not really close, but they share a common ancestry."

Ms. Dobson, who says she is also a cousin of Mr. Harper’s — but distantly removed — became interested in all this when she volunteered at Yorkshire 2000, a major event in Nova Scotia that celebrated the 225th anniversary of the arrival of 2,000 people from Yorkshire, England, between 1772 and ’75.

Asked whether Mr. Harper and Mr. Wells appear to share any attributes, Ms. Dobson laughed.

"You can always tell a Yorkshireman, you just can’t tell him anything," she said.

"The other Yorkshire saying that actually would work very well probably for the Robb Wells character . . . is Yorkshire-born, Yorkshire-bred, thick in the arm, thick in the head."

For those Canadians who don’t watch Showcase’s Trailer Park Boys, Mr. Wells plays the potato chip and pepperoni stick-consuming character living in his car in Nova Scotia’s fictional Sunnyvale trailer park. Profane and overweight, he steals the pepperoni sticks from his father.

He’s also dumb. His friends, Julian and Bubbles, help him out of frequent scrapes.

Mr. Harper, meanwhile, is the serious-minded, policy-wonkish politician who lives at Stornoway, the official mansion of the Opposition leader, but would like to be living soon at 24 Sussex Drive, the prime minister’s official residence.

He is not profane, nor is he dumb, but like his cousin, Mr. Wells, he is slightly overweight and he has just recently, according to reports, begun to listen to his handlers and let them help him. So far he has had no scrapes in this election.

On the show, Ricky drinks rum because that’s the liquor he started stealing from his father at the age of seven or eight.

The distant relationship to Mr. Wells might help win Mr. Harper some political support, Ms. Dobson said.

"You never know," she said. "He’s trying to reach out to people with things like his cut in the GST. . . . A few cents off the GST adds up eventually to a bottle of rum."

Through her research, Ms. Dobson discovered that George Dobson and his wife, Mary Barker, came to Nova Scotia from Yorkshire in 1773. She said Mr. Harper is a descendant of Mary Dobson, who married William Jones.

Mr. Jones was a rebel in the Eddy Rebellion of 1776, in which Acadians joined forces with Jonathan Eddy, a farmer who was originally from Massachusetts, to try to retake Fort Cumberland (now Fort Beausejour) from the British.

George Dobson is buried in the graveyard at Fort Beausejour, near Sackville, N.B., Ms. Dobson said.

Robb Wells, like herself, she adds, is a descendant of Mary’s oldest sister, Margaret, who married William Wells.

"Harper may also be a Wells descendant as he has Chappell blood," she said. "The Wellses and the Chappells did a lot of intermarrying."

Ms. Dobson had a chance to meet Mr. Harper on Thursday when he was campaigning in Halifax. She said that she helped a friend organize a "rope line" for him as he walked into his news conference.

"So when he got to me, I said, ‘Good luck, cousin Stephen,’ " she said.

He went on, but he suddenly turned and said: "Did you say cousin?"

She said: "Yeah." And he said: "Well, how?"

"So I said, Dobson, Goodwin, Chapman, Jones," Ms. Dobson recalled.

Does anyone have a copy or recording of "Flamenco" when the hip played at the phoenix over Christmas? I know thehip.com has ABAC and Bobcaygoen but no Flamenco. It's such a good and rarely played song, thought it would sound especially good in that small setting.

I am in the process of cataloguing and all around just getting on top of my boot collection after letting it get WAY ahead of me over the last couple of years.

My question is that if I have shows (a small percentage of the whole but some good ones) on crappy CDs ie. Maxell/various generics from the early days of trading/before I knew better, is there any value in upgrading to better quality CDs?

I know the answer is probably yes of course, but what I'm really asking is it a LARGE value worth the time and effort? I must admit that I don't listen to my shows nearly as much as I used to and I'm not getting any younger etc so if the difference is that a Maxell type disk lasts 15 years and a newer higher quality disk lasts 25 years it probably wont be a worthwhile endeavour for me. But at the same time I don't just want my shows disintegrating on crap cds. If you know what I mean.

Hey everyone, i've not posted here for well over a year (since my accidental trip to chicago on the night the hip were playing with sam roberts...)

Anyway, I am signed up to various ticket selling sites and subsequent alert e-mails, and this morning i received an e-mail which VERY CLEARLY says The Tragically Hip under the "New this week" section.

Now, there's no information on this organisations web site, but it could just mean its announced but tickets aren;t available yet. Even more annoyingly there is no date or location for the gig, so can anyone help me out?

I really want to be at this gig, but i got a bad feeling it just going to be a london date or something equally annoying.

any info would be appreciated and i'll let everyone here know if i hear anything new.

I got laid off on Monday. I had been at this job, as an Architectural Technologist, since last August, and as far as I knew everything was going very well. Unbeknownst to me, the projected workload that I was hired to handle just hasn't materialized. I was so shocked and pissed off because not only did I get screwed out of this job, but my employer lured me over from a great job I had as an estimator for a construction company. I've gotten over the shock and anger, and now I am at the move on stage.

Here's the crux of this email. To the Hipbasers in Calgary, I am wondering if you guys have any connections to construction companies, architects, designers, that sort of thing, that could use a draftsperson. I've got 4ish years commercial construction experience, drafting, estimating, and project coordinating.

I've sent out probably 30 resumes already and I have an interview tomorrow afternoon. I'm not concerned about finding work, it's finding the right company where I am a good fit.

Hey all. I was just leafing through The Pocket DJ, and saw that the author of one of my favorite books (Stephen Chbosky's The Perks of Being a Wallflower) has submitted a playlist. I was even more surprised to see that ABAC is on his list! He also includes The Smiths, Nick Drake, and stuff from Hedwig. Anyways, back to regularly scheduled board chatter.
