Before anyone smacks me around, I did run a search and combed through subject headings going back till August, and couldn't find anything that addresses the following:

When is World Container going to be released down here in the States? We expats need our new Hip too, but I haven't seen any sign of any non-import versions south of the border. Is it going to be in the next couple weeks? Or do I need to get people back home to buy WC (and Sloan's new album, which won't be out here till freaking January) and ship it down to me?

At 12:05am (Atlantic time), a 2006 show will be played (and looped) in its entirety. Pre-broadcast to start at midnight.

Don't think it's been mentioned yet... but according to edge.ca Gord is going to be at the Edge studios for a chat with Bookie (oh god the pain) at 4PM on Tuesday October 17th.

I was just out driving doing some errands and as I was flipping radio stations, I heard Last Night I Dreamed You Didn't Love Me. I almost went into the other lane. Turns out, Barrie's Rock Station ROCK 95 has "Hip Replacement Day" today and are playing the new tracks from the album as well as Hip classics.

Hey folks. I have a confession to make: I love my fiancee. As cliche as it may sound, along with my beautiful daughter, she is my world. We have been together for three and a half years, and each day that we are together just keeps getting better and better. In all my 29 years, I've never had a love like this, a woman for whom I would do anything without question. My feelings for her are so strong, that sometimes, I find it to be overwhelming if I sit and just think about it for awhile.
Which brings me to my feelings about this song. I have been listening to the Hip religiously since 1994, shortly before DFN came out. Since that time, I can estimate that I've probably listened to each and every one of their songs about 500 times. I've raked over Gord's Lyrics over and over, analyzing, deciphering, breaking them down. We are all aware of how he evokes emotion in us, paints a picture. I have never been personally affected, emotionally, by a Hip song. I love them all, don't get me wrong, but I could only ever sense Gord's emotion. Until now...
The very first time I heard LNIDYDLM, the VERY FIRST TIME...... I cried. Not sobbing, gasping-for-air crying, but a tear coming down each cheek. I start the waterworks during the last few lines of the song, where the emotion in Gord's voice takes a desperate turn, where he screams "YOU didn't love meeeeeeee, why don't ya love me like you used to??!? When you kissed my fingers and you made me love YOU??!"
Wow... even as I type this and imagine the song... I'm welling up. How would I feel if I didn't have my Juliette? (yes, that's her name) Word for word, Gord has it down cold:

"Last night I dreamed, last night I dreamed darkly nurtured dreams
None of them were quite as frightening
oh
Canada emptied, there was me, featureless and freezing
Last night I dreamed you didn’t love me "

Oh, the pain in those lyrics. This is how I would feel if she didn't love me anymore. Empty, alone, featureless and freezing. But then, the last few lines, spooked me because I have personally experienced this, having a dream (nightmare?) that her and I were no longer together, and then waking up in a sweat, breathing hard, and turning quick to make sure she was still there... and there she was, beside me gently breathing:

"Last night I dreamed, last night I dreamed darkly nurtured dreams
None of them, none as frightening,
oh
Awake empty and out of sleep, you were beside me gently breathing
Last night I dreamed you didn’t love me"

My heart aches when I listen to this song, but it only makes me realize that my feeling for this incredible person will never change, and will remain strong forever. Thanks to the band for such a powerful song, and thanks to you all for reading, and for being my outlet. This has been festering inside me for almost a week now, and finally I get it out.

I'm sorry to those of you who feel this was all sap, but I feel comfortable in this community, and I know there are those of you who will appreciate reading something like this.

Hip influences come out of closet

TORONTO -- An odd thing happens when you pair Canadian rock icons the Tragically Hip with legendary Canadian record producer Bob Rock: hockey to a calypso beat.

Hip lead singer Gord Downie says the band's collaboration with the man behind such huge '80s rock albums as Motley Crue's Dr. Feelgood and Bon Jovi's Slippery When Wet drew out some unexpected experiments when recording the new album World Container. (See mini-review in Discs feature on this page).

"Any conversation about how the record was made has to start with Bob and probably end with Bob," Downie says.

"He suggests anywhere from 100 to 300 to 500 (takes), I don't know, it just seemed endless, and everything was prefaced with, 'This might sound crazy' or 'Call me insane, but . . .' and he would want to hear something, he would want to hear it go in this direction."

Directions included calypso-tinged guitar upstrokes for the hockey song The Lonely End of the Rink. The standout second track evokes snow- covered roads and frozen lakes with a chugging, island-inspired guitar rhythm -- and it works.

But acknowledging that those musical inclinations were a part of the five-man rock band -- including guitarists Paul Langlois and Rob Baker, bassist Gord Sinclair and drummer Johnny Fay -- was a new thing.

Downie says their tendency has been to focus on their instantly identifiable sound -- a full, guitar-driven wall of rock behind such northern anthems as At the Hundredth Meridian and Bobcaygeon.

"We were big Clash fans, you know, big Who fans and I think we would listen to this music and talk about music and do nothing but music night and day, and when it came time to actually making our own music, you feel compelled to sort of tuck all those influences away, not show them," he says.

"I think (for the new album) we willingly surrendered to that idea of fun in the studio and having fun and not being afraid to show your influences . . . as opposed to that dogged pursuit of your own sound."

For his part, Rock has called the collaboration an opportunity to make "the Great Canadian Record," praising the Hip for acknowledging their influences without impersonating anyone and Downie for consistently solid performances.

Downie says such daunting titles as "Great Canadian Record" are not so easily bestowed, but he does concede to being a part of "the Great Canadian Movie" -- starring those unconventional heroes the Trailer Park Boys.

Downie makes a cameo in the big-screen smash, written and directed by friend Mike Clattenburg -- "Canada's Chekhov, or something like that," Downie calls him.

Clattenburg cast Downie and Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson as a couple of cops.

"Acting is like lifting a 400-pound feather," Downie says of his time in front of the camera.

"It's a feather; how hard could it be? And yet, you go to lift it and it's heavy. For that reason, I love it because it's very hard and difficult and challenging and obviously I want to learn more." 

OK, so I'm at this Hip concert and they play the whole World Container album from beginning to end, in order. That's kind of weird. And then they follow it up with One Night in Copenhagen, before playing the whole album over again.

I've been having this dream several days in a row, but lately they seem to replacing Copenhagen with Inevitability of Death.

Weird...
