JOEL PLASKETT EMERGENCY
ASHTRAY ROCK TOUR '07

The Joel Plaskett Emergency heads out on tour in support of their new cd "Ashtray Rock".

Starting in Quebec City on May 3rd and wrapping up in Toronto with two shows at the Opera House on May 25 and 26, the Ashtray Rock Tour promises to be the Joel Plaskett Emergency's most successful and exciting Canadian tour to date. Supported by the Peter Elkas band and with Peter joining the Emergency onstage, these concerts will showcase the band's new work and will feature audience favourites like the 2006 hit "Nowhere With You".

First single "Snowed In" is currently being picked up by Canadian rock radio across the country and a second single "Fashionable People" will hit Hot A/C radio later this month. Ashtray Rock will be available in stores on April 17th. Already being touted as the band's best work, Ashtray Rock is a mini rock opera, a landmark album in the career of an already celebrated songwriter.

Hot on the heels of winning three ECMA Awards (Single of the Year, Songwriter of the Year and DVD of the Year), the Emergency headed off to a sold out tour of Australia. They will return just in time to take their show on the road in Canada!

We're doing a 40th anniversary issue at the Lakehead Argus this week. Pulled this out because I think this will be my "historical article" for my section. Nothing new really here, just a nice glimpse to the past. All original mistakes have been left in (and there are a couple of doozies).

Tragically Girl Crazy

A Concert Review

Well students I felt that it was time to review the Tragically Hip concert once and for all. I’ll be taking the fanatical students view, although you may find it slightly biased. The Hip rock the Student Centre, a.k.a. The Outpost on Tuesday and Wednesday of last week. The popularity of the band, across Canada, and at LU was very evident. I fell the Hip are one of the best Canadian bands to emerge in the recent years, contrary to the views of my comrade CP Walsh.
Although I was not at the Tuesday concert I did manage to get to the later performance and they did not disappoint. I heard that “crowd was better on Tuesday, but the band was better on Wednesday” from a friend that made it to both concerts. Well, I was pretty happy about that. I wanted to see the band, not the crowd.
I was impressed that the band actually came to Thunder Bay amidst the wave of their current success. Jeff “Doc” Docherty, the pub manager, should be commended for not only getting the band, but booking them for two shows. It was nice to see a quality band open the student centre.
Well on to the show. The band was definitely worth the $20 admission. As a fan of the band I was pleased with the stage show. The music was perfect and the lyrics of Gordon Downie were justified and enhanced amidst his Morrisonesque stage presence.
Highlights: To open the show “Blow at High Dough” and Little Bones”, two of the bands more recognizable and more driving tunes, indeed a sign of better things to come.
The Hip covered almost all of Up to Here and Road Apples with a few cameos from their little known self titled debut album. Take the appropriate halloween type song titled “I’m a Warewolf Baby”. Their best performance came during the songs “Three Pistols” and On the Verge” from their most recent release. “Verge” was sped up a to finish and the guitars of Paul Langois and Bobby Baker were emphasised to the point where their driving style was clear and concise.
“Last of the Unplucked Jems” provided a break in the action. A slower and more mellow tune, it seemed to settled the crowd down and prep them for the finale. The band played a three song encore to the delight of the few die-hard fans on the floor who actually cheered for the band to come back out, providing further entertainment for the silent mass along the top and back of the pub.
All in all I grade the concert(s) a inspiring success. This is most likely the pub will bring in this year, unless the ever magical “Doc” can outdo this one. Whatever the outcome in the future of the pub, the Tragically Hip did not disappoint at the grand opening of The Outpost.

The Hip Interview

One week ago my brain went on hold. The TRAGICALLY HIP was in town and I was going. My brain went from hold to blown when I received permission to interview the band. Being a dead pan, die hard HIP fan since 1987 I was at first overwhelmed and nervous with the prospect of an interview. That is until Gordon Downie sat down and extended his hand. What a cool guy – very intelligent and presented his answers in a very unexpected way; he was interested in our concerns.
My interview partner Greg started the interview with a pressing personal question that had bothered him for some time. Greg asked him who picked the singles and Gord politely told us he doesn’t handle the releases and doesn’t have a “fucking clue” how radio works and couldn’t be bothered listening to it. The promotional releases are picked by record company management (we don’t think they’ve done a good job so far). I next asked him how their performance went on Tuesday and what they thought of the student centre. The reply came with a comparison to a similar bar in Kitchener where they enjoy playing. “I like the bar it’s interesting although the metal…” he then explained the acoustics were great for the amount of metal used, although improvements with less metal would enhance the sound. Greg comment on their performance and asked if they ever got tired of playing the same old songs. Gord told us that throwing in little changes and juicy new parts spices up an old tune. We continued talking and brought up the fact that Thunder Bay had declared itself English only last year and the HIP’s song “Born in the Water” naturally came up. The song deals with the Soo going Anglican. Gord was naturally disappointed with Thunder Bay but showed pride for other cities such as Kingston, Canada’s last WASP stronghold going bilingual. The whole issue he summed up as full of shit and he was tired of arguing. To change the subject into something more enjoyable I asked him where NEW ORLEANS IS SINKING came from.
“The song is from a time where I was at Queen’s.” He and a few buddies were in second year University and decided to go down to the New Orleans Mardigras. The whole experience was overwhelming and he, being an amateur songwriter at the time, decided to put lyrics o the feeling and thus their tune NEW ORELEANS IS SINKING came about. As for new album, its in the works, next spring look forward to new HIP material – we listened to three new songs in rehearsal and I can say they were all quite excellent (I don’t know if it was the song or seeing Gord and the guys belting out the turn in front of me.)
Over all the HIP enjoyed playing our fair city and had a great time and left just in time to miss the snow. Gord did change the name of our bar however to “Girl Crazy”, not a great name but we (he Greg and I) didn’t like “The Outpost” much more.

Hello everyone,
I am doing a reasearch paper on The Tragically Hip for a class I am taking on Issues in Popular Music at the University of Guelph. They are one of the biggest if not biggest Canadian bands ever. The band has toured the States and a frew European countries (Belgium, Sweden, etc). But they haven't really caught on in other countries, and nor do I get the impression that they want to.
I'm looking to do a small field study on why people do or do not listen to the hip.

It would be great if you could help me out, I would need the following questions answered?

1) Name
2) Age and Location
3) Do you own any hip albums, if so how many?
4) What is your favourite Hip Song?
5) Do you listen to the Tragically Hip, if so how often.
6) What immediately attracted you to hip OR What did you first dislike about the band
5) If you are not from Canada, do you feel that the strong canadian content of the Hip's lyrics alienates the listeners?

It's been 4 years since Reconstruction Site was released, and I haven't heard a peep from them since last June when they opened for the Hip on the "Summer Fling" tour. I'm starting to wonder if they're still alive. I've heard that John Samson is notoriously slow when it comes to songwriting, but this is one hell of a long wait. I hope they haven't called it quits. It would be a shame for them to throw in the towel after only three albums. Hopefully we'll hear something new from them before the year is out.
