I sure most fans can identify certain Hip songs that share a common theme or idea. I thought it would be interesting to try and link 6 Hip songs together using either common words, phrases, lines or themes.

Give it a try and see if you can come up with a six song chain. You may have your own unique reason for linking 2 songs together. Feel free to explain your chain or make it into a game and let others try and figure out the connection between songs.

I'll start things off with an easy one. Each song is connected to the other with a common word. Try and figure out the 5 words that complete the chain.

Musically speaking, I LOVE World Container... it's probably my favorite Hip album in a long time, in terms of the songs. There are many memorable, edgy and creative songs, and Gord's vocals sound terrific, especially compared to IBE. But it's really hard to listen to because of the absolutely over-the-top compression and limiting. It's headache-inducing and there is no real dynamic range at all, which gets very tedious to listen to after a short time. IT HAS THE EFFECT OF SOMEONE TYPING IN CAPS ALL THE TIME, FOR THE WHOLE LENGTH OF A VERY LONG MESSAGE. I mean, gosh, even "Pretend" is all pushed to the limit. It's terrible, sonically speaking.

The bottom line is... you can make an album nice and loud and punchy without destroying all of its dynamics. I seriously hope the band and/or their label will consider remastering this disc. Think of any analogy you like for taking something vibrant and colorful and squashing all the life out of it... that's what happened here. They spent months creating a terrific sonic landscape, and then probably weeks to make what was likely a great final mix, and then the final mastering just washed it all out into mush. I wish I could get my hands on the final mix of this album, before it was mastered. That would be the version of this album I would want to hear again and again. As it is now, it is tiresome to hear all the way through even once.

Maybe not many will actually complain about this (here's someone else who does), but everybody listening suffers from it, subconsciously at least, and so does the music, ultimately. The same thing happened to Rush's Vapor Trails album, which became infamous for its destroyed dynamics and distortion. Apparently, a remastered version of Vapor Trails is actually being released because of so many complaints, so hopefully The Hip will do the same.

I just watched this doc, and I wanted to see if anyone else has seen it. Here's the trailer, and once I'm back from class, I'll post more about what its about... but the trailer sums it up nice. Very enjoyable watch.

On a drive a couple of days ago myself and my wench wife got into a discussion while listening to Phantom Power. 'Escape Is At Hand..' comes on and one of us turns up the volume and announces this to be their favourate Hip song. The other one agrees it's a good song but 'The Dire Wolf' is infact the best Hip track. This discussion goes back and forth with the merits of both tracks being bigged up or dismissed also lots of childish namecalling and insults fly.

Anyway this arguement has threated the very fabric of our once stable marrage, so I put it you you fellow Hipsters to decide which is the better track.

I'm going to attempt to make this a poll I hope it works!

/Obviously I overplayed the extent of the arguement our marriage isn't threatened But we both would like to see which song comes out on top - and I've purposely not said who prefers which track!
