Roger Waters plays `Dark Side,' unleashes giant pig

NDIO, Calif. (AP) - Roger Waters brought Coachella to a close with an epic two-set performance that included playing all of "Dark Side of the Moon" and unleashing a giant inflated pig into the night sky.

The 64-year-old Waters, the third headliner of the three-day music festival following Prince and Jack Johnson, performed an elaborate, almost retrospective concert Sunday featuring music from throughout Pink Floyd's catalog.

Old photographs of the band often flashed across the screen behind Waters and his current band, which played songs from "The Wall," "Wish You Were Here" and "Animals," among other Floyd albums. They also played "Dark Side" in its entirety, culminating with the album's iconic triangle prism rising above the stage.

But Waters' biggest prop was an inflatable pig the size of a school bus that emerged while he played a version of "Pigs" from 1977's capitalism critique, "Animals."

The pig, which was led above the crowd from lines held on the ground, displayed the words "Don't be led to the slaughter" and a cartoon of Uncle Sam wielding two bloody cleavers. The other side read "Fear builds walls."

The underside of the pig simply read "Obama" with a checked ballot box alongside.

As Waters drew the song to a close, flame bursts exploded on the sides of the stage and the swine floated into the night sky. Waters said sadly and comically, "That's my pig."

The performance also included speaker towers placed around the outside of the crowd. Smoke machines funneled across the stage and over the audience, thickening the atmosphere.

Montages exit stage right
NAC and NFB team up to make short films about gala honorees

Prestigious filmmakers are behind a new twist to the Governor General's Performing Arts Awards gala to be held at the National Arts Centre next Saturday.

In past years, a typical awards-night montage -- a brief interview and a few career clips -- was played at the gala to introduce each award recipient. This year, National Film Board chair Tom Perlmutter had the idea to do something different. In collaboration with the NAC, the NFB recruited eight Canadian directors to make short films about the recipients. They'll premiere at next Saturday's gala.

The NFB plans to make the videos available on DVD, its website and YouTube within a few months. A three-minute trailer of the videos can now be seen exclusively at ottawacitizen.com/arts.

"Every film is completely and utterly different," said the NFB's Gerry Flahive, who produced five of the films. "They reflect the individual director's stamp and a sense of who the recipients are. Some films are quite funny, some are very moving and some include animation. There are a lot of surprises."

The videos range in length from three to five minutes. Directors shot the high-definition films in March, and each had a budget of about $25,000.

David Battistella said he was honoured to make a film about the Tragically Hip. Battistella divided the film into three sections: the first shows the Tragically Hip's creative space, studio and beginnings; the second revolves around live performances; the third closes the film with a feeling of where the Hip is going. "The music itself helped guide me," said Battistella.

Eugene Levy, Eric Charman, Anton Kuerti, Brian Macdonald, John Murrell, Alanis Obomsawin and Michel Pagliaro are also among the recipients.

Vancouver director Carl Bessai made a film to introduce Charman, the 2008 recipient of the Ramon John Hnatyshyn award for voluntarism.

Bessai's challenge was to create a piece about someone who is not an artist but instead a tireless supporter of the arts. Charman has organized hundreds of charity events and raised millions for arts organizations in Victoria.

"Eric is a gregarious, fun guy," said Bessai. "It was about capturing him doing things that are a bit theatrical."

Bessai staged a charity event to film at Victoria's Empress Hotel. He called on musicians and community members to participate in the filming.

Katerina Cizek, David Acomba, Cam Christiansen, Robin Neinstein, Tim Southam and Eric Tessier directed the six other films.
