Hey folks, sorry if this has been discussed, I've been off in outter space and away from a computer most of the summer.

I just bought tickets to see the boys at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. I hear Jim Bryson may be backing them up. Is that all, or is a fuller ensemble possible, given the orchestral setting?

With this tour wrapping up (apparently) in early December, I'm wondering if Das Hips might announce a New Year's show in Toronto or something like that.

Would be pretty cool - and would be my only chance to see them this year!

So, I experienced my first email hack this morning. Some of you may have even been recipients of that lovely email promising DVDs on the cheap or some idiotic thing like that. Sorry team.

Anyone else gone through this before? Were you able to successfully save the account, via new passwords and extra security or did you have to mothball the damn thing and start over?

Kidnapped girl found after 18 years

Jaycee Dugard was 11-years-old when she was abducted as she walked to a bus stop near her home

A girl from California who was abducted 18 years ago at the age of 11 has been found alive, US police say.

Jaycee Dugard had been missing since she was abducted in 1991 near her home in South Lake Tahoe, east of the city of San Francisco, by two people in a grey sedan.

According to police, during her years in captivity her kidnapper fathered two children with her and kept all three living in tents and sheds behind his house.

"It's a pretty spectacular story just to find someone like that. Someone we assumed was dead," said Bill Clark, the chief assistant district attorney for El Dorado County, east of the state capital of Sacramento.

Police identified Dugard's alleged kidnappers as Phillip Craig Garrido and Nancy Garrido.

They said Phillip Craig Garrido was a registered sex offender in California who had previously been jailed for rape and kidnapping,

Police also said both were in custody after being arrested on Wednesday.

Detectives said suspicions were first raised after Garrido tried to enter a nearby university campus to pass out leaflets with his two daughters.

Dugard's 18 years in captivity
His interaction with the two young girls - aged 11 and 15 - raised suspicion and police looked into his background.

The next day, during a visit to his parole officer, Garrido brought his wife, the two girls and another woman named Allissa - who later proved to be Dugard.

Fred Kollar, the El Dorado County Undersheriff, told the Reuters news agency that Dugard was healthy, but said that "living in a backyard the last 18 years must take its toll.

"None of the children had ever been to school, none had been to a doctor, they were kept in complete isolation in this compound, if you will, at the house".

'Total shock'

Dugard was walking to a bus stop near her home when she was kidnapped.

Carl Probyn, the girl's stepfather, told local television that "we both cried for about 10 minutes" after he and her mother were informed by the authorities that she had been found alive.

"Just total shock you know, after 18 years. When my wife called me and basically said 'are you sitting down?' I said 'yeah' and she goes 'they found Jaycee'. And she paused for 10 seconds, and she goes 'she's alive'."

Amid the continuing investigation, Dugard has been reunited with her mother at a secret location near San Francisco.

Kidnap suspect eyed for murder links

ANTIOCH, Calif. - The twisted kidnapping case of a woman reportedly held captive for 18 years in a secluded backyard compound took another disturbing turn Friday as authorities searched the home of her alleged captor for evidence in the slayings of several prostitutes.

Officers executed a search warrant at Phillip Garrido's Antioch home for clues in the unsolved slayings, Contra Costa sheriff's Capt. Daniel Terry said.

Several of the women's bodies — the exact number is not known — were dumped near an industrial park where Garrido, a sex offender, worked during the 1990s.

Garrido, 58, and his wife, Nancy, 54, were held without bond Friday after pleading not guilty to a total of 29 felony counts, including forcible abduction, rape, sexual assault and false imprisonment in connection with the abduction of 11-year-old Jaycee Lee Dugard in 1991. Authorities allege the Garridos held Dugard and two children she reportedly had with Garrido as prisoners in a backyard encampment.

Meanwhile, questions arose over how Garrido's alleged kidnapping crime went undetected for so long.

His neighbors knew he was a registered sex offender. Kids on his block called him "Creepy Phil" and kept their distance. Parole agents and local law enforcement regularly visited his home and found nothing unusual, even after a neighbor complained children were living in a complex of tents in his backyard.

For 18 years, Garrido managed to elude detection as he pulled off what authorities are calling an unfathomable crime, kidnapping Jaycee, keeping her as his secret sex slave for nearly two decades and fathering her two children.

Missed opportunities
Authorities acknowledged that they blew a chance in 2006 to rescue Dugard from the backyard labyrinth of sheds, tents and outbuildings that were concealed from the outside world.

A neighbor called 911 in November 2006 and described Garrido as a psychotic sex addict who was living with children and had people staying in tents in his backyard.

The investigating officer spent a half-hour interviewing Garrido on his front porch but did not enter the house or search the backyard, Contra Costa County Sheriff Warren E. Rupf said. The deputy, who did not know Garrido was a registered sex offender even though the sheriff's department had the information, warned Garrido that the tents could be a code violation before leaving.

"We missed an opportunity to bring earlier closure to this situation," Contra Costa County Sheriff Warren E. Rupf acknowledged. "I cannot change the course of events but we are beating ourselves up over this and continue to do so."

"We should have been more inquisitive, more curious and turned over a rock or two."

As a parolee, Garrido wore a GPS-linked ankle bracelet that tracked his every movement, met with his parole agent several times each month and was subject to routine surprise home visits and random drug and alcohol tests, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation spokesman Gordon Hinkle said.

Went to see Blue Rodeo the other night at the amp. Couldn't help but thinking listening to the show how great live music sounds in that setting. At both outdoor Hip shows I attended this tour the sound has been ok. So I couldn't help but thinking how great it would be to see the Hip at the Amp another time. That thought was encouraged walking past the 2002 Tragically Hip star on my return from the beer line. Having been at that show in 2002 I remember the sheer sound of base and audible clarity the Hip can produce. I hope they play there again soon.
