are they loosing there steam ?
I have been a huge hip fan since 1993
and after looking at the set list it appears to be the same show over and over again
please note i am not writing this to be negative i strongly believe they are the best live and will see them every chance i can get

but after seeing them in nyc last summer i was left not impressed at all

since than i have seen phish 6 times, and every show was different and exciting phish never plays the same song twice
i know the hip and phish are two different animals, but how many times can they open with depression suite nois ect...
even gord looked like all his improves were planned out and he is so expected to do crazy dances that it has gotten a little out of control

anyone else share these feelings that they are loosing their steam

5 years ago today I was getting hyped up about heading down for the show. Wasn't very familiar with the band, got tickets because I knew that the girl I liked really enjoyed them. Anywho my bestfriend, the girl I liked, one of her friends and I all got tickets. Holy hell, I was introduced to two of my favourite bands that night (TTH and JPE) and enjoyed one of the best concerts I'd ever seen. Started dating the girl two days later and we're still together, although I think she sometimes regrets "introducing me" to the Hip when I say "just wait a minute I've gotta check something on the computer before we leave" and I innevitably hit up the hipbase. :lol:

  Why are The Hip records not on Itunes or Spotify in the UK?

Here in the UK, I have been playing some Hip music for friends who really like what they hear. Most of them then ask me for album recommendations they can listen to, at which point I rattle off a few (often Day For Night, Fully Completely, Phantom Power as good starting points). Since most people use Itunes these days, they innevetibly come back quickly saying Itunes only have Music@Work, In Violet Light and the current record on there. Why only those?

The other major way people check out music here in the UK is Spotify, which is a music streaming service where the artists actually get paid. It's hugely popular here and has caused a mini-revelution. Here again The Hip's management seemed to have missed a trick, as they only have We Are The Same and a song from a movie called Brain Candy on there (95% of well known bands have their entire catalogue on this system). It's really odd they don't have more content on this site.

I find this strange/disappointing. The Tragicaly Hip are over here in Europe supposedly promoting themselves and their records, but people in earnest can't get a hold of some of their best records in the most common ways people access music these days? Feels like they're behind the times.

It's a shame becuase people spreading the word organically about a great band like this is precisely how they will develop dedicated following in new countries, but if you make it too hard for people, they don't make the effort (or download illegally). The Hip's management should sort this out. Anyone else find this?

I know it's an insanely unlikely chance someone here has a single (or 2) Grey Cup ticket for sale. It turns out I am going to be flying through Calgary (from Saskatchewan) on Sunday, and since I am gonna be right there anyway, I figure I might as well see if I can go watch my beloved Roughriders play...

  rudimentary hip data visualizations

Without boring anyone too much with the details, I decided I wanted to play around with data visualizations. I've been wanting to do that for a while now, but I could never really find data I cared enough about to get my hands dirty -- until it occurred to me to use Hip concert data. So I now have the first in what I hope will be a series of visualizations of increasing interestingness, awesomeness and complexity. It's just a map of North America, color-coded to be darker in places where the Hip have played most often, which means it's dead simple and doesn't tell us anything we don't already know. But I think it's a good first step, and if you guys have ideas for other visualizations or stuff you'd like to see, I'd love to hear them. I think next I want to do some kind of google maps mashup that would show where they've played at a more granular level, and from there I can start pulling in dates and setlists. It could be awesome! At any rate, it's a good learning experience for me.

Anybody out east should check this out. Us Ontarions may get all of the good hip shows but you Maritimer's sure get all of the good JPE shows.

He's playing a 7pm and 11pm show on December 31 with the Emergency at Casino Nova Scotia in the Schooner Room.
