Just heard on satellite radio channel, "The Verge" (xm 87) that the Tragically Hip is trying to get to government to tax people buying MP3 players so that the money can be sent to artists. They didnt explain which artists, but im thinking maybe the artists have songs included on the MP3 players when they are purchased !?!?!? Any comments or thoughts?

Any chance someone could upload the 12-31-1999 NYE audio show - My copy is corrupt.
I used to put cd stickers/labels on some of my cd's and I believe the glue/ink leaks through and makes the cd unplayable.
I have some other shows I also lost this way - I guess I will request those soon also.
I have been having a discussion with some people about Gems being played as the clock struck midnight on New Years eve - So I wanted to give them a copy of Gems so they could re-live it.

So here's a nice rarity for the Hip fans out there!
Many years ago, someone I barely new approached me and said, "I have something you may be interested in." According to his story, his best friend's parents owned a recording studio in Hamilton, and the Tragically Hip were recording their new album there. The band had run a few cassette copies of works in progress for themselves, and accidentally left one behind. His friend then "borrowed" it, and made him a copy. I did get this before "Day for Night" was released, and was sworn to not share it with anyone because of that. The album is 16 years old now though, and in poking around the internet a bit, I notice this does seem to be in circulation now. I have no idea what quality is out there, but this one sounds pretty good. It's a bit hissy, obviously been dubbed a few times. I figure the lineage could be master>cassette dub>friend of friend>friend>me, so about 4th gen. Could be more in there I'm not aware of, of course. I call it Running Master #1, because that was what was written on the tape he loaned me. Oh, and there's an unreleased track on it, too!

What are the hot items this year? I'm stumped on what to give this year.

Archive.org is a terrific source for live recordings and it's sorely missing The Tragically Hip. (Here's the current list.) Is there any reason they shouldn't be there? Perhaps all it requires is for someone to ask. I'm happy to keep running thehiptracker, thehundredthmeridian, and hipfans but I don't have the time or resources to update, let alone maintain them any more. And the folks over at archive have everything already in place to host, distribute, catalogue, convert, etc.

As well it will expose new music fans to The Hip's music... and entice tapers to go to their shows.

In late November, Joel will return from the UK where he has spent most of 2010 touring with his acoustic guitar in hand. He’s ready to turn on the amps! On December 16 and 17, Joel and the Emergency are going to hit the Seahorse Tavern in Halifax for two nights of rock and roll. Playing in the three piece set up with Dave Marsh (drums) and Chris Pennell (bass), the Emergency will dig back into the catalogue for some rarities and classics, as well as debut some new tunes.

Super jealous of all you Haligonians!

What a great band. I love their complete disregard for the standard industry procedure of waiting 2-3 years between albums. They just keep churning out new material every year (or whenever they feel like it), and the albums are always excellent. I'm still digesting this year's "The Big To-Do" album, and now I've only got a short 3-month wait before I hear more new music from them. It's amazing! They also have a documentary coming out soon, hopefully on DVD as well. Here's some info on the new record, as well as the official track list:

Thought I'd share some love for a kind of unfairly maligned album... Wish some of the rarer tracks would have been played on the tour this year. Still, I can't really complain much with these cool bonus tracks!

I went to see the Trews' acoustic tour on Friday (fantastic show, by the way) and before a new song was played, Colin said that they recorded their upcoming album at the Bathouse with Gord Sinclair. In the middle of that new song, they started playing Thugs:
