Just wondering if anyone had any info on if the new album was going to be released in the U.S.? The last two albums I've had to travel to Canada to get them. With the new requirements of crossing the border it looks like I'm going to have to upgrade my license to get across. I really don't want to go through all the hassle if I don't have to.

How did a young man from northern Ontario, the son of an Irish miner, become Canada’s most influential flamenco guitarist? Invisible in formal Canadian musicology, David Phillips’ tragic story is interwoven with the counterculture movement that found its home in Toronto’s Yorkville neighborhood in the 1960’s, and spawned a vibrant flamenco culture still thriving across Canada.

Underscoring Phillips’ own innovative and sublime flamenco sound, ‘EL PAYO’ features original music by a number of contemporary Canadian stars, including flamenco vocalist Paco de Leon, violinist Karen Kimmett, the acclaimed ‘First Lady of the Guitar’, classical guitarist Liona Boyd and The Tragically Hip guitarist Rob Baker and percussionist Johnny Fay.

"Max Montalvo, director of “El Payo” : Rob is a good friend who I’ve known for years living in Kingston. One our mutual interests in music, and he became interested in the film when he heard about it.
He’s often said that his role was more like an obstetrician who would come in and check my progress from time to time and would say to himself, ‘Still dilating…’ Rob was very generous in doing the narration for the beginning of the film, as well as writing original music in his masterful style of pedal-steel guitar given the film’s connection to northern Ontario.
As executive producer of the film Rob also provided access to The Bathouse, the recording studio in Bath, Ontario, where we recorded and mastered a number of tracks for the film as well as the film’s sound."

CBC Metro Morning: REMEMBERING DAVID PHILLIPS
Matt Galloway spoke with The Tragically Hip’s guitarist Rob Baker. He is the executive producer of EL PAYO, a documentary which tells the story of how flamenco came to Toronto, courtesy of the late David Phillips. (runs 5:59)

What they’re saying about EL PAYO…
"It is elegant and sad, lyrical and affecting, a beautiful film"
Gord Downie, The Tragically Hip

"a marvelous job of tracing the history of the art form in Toronto"
Cathy Riches, WHOLE NOTE Magazine

"grainy black-and-white footage of the streets of Andalucia...the footage is hypnotic"
Linda Barnard, THE STAR

"an appealing ramble through the life of a man whose career never quite achieved the heights it deserved"
Norman Wilner, NOW Magazine

Reaching out to any music fans living in the Los Angeles area. I've got a day to kill in Los Angeles in a few weeks and I'd like to do some record shopping. Besides Amoeba, anyone from the area have any tips on places to check out?

So, the NOTL show is coming - great! I plan on grabbing a buddy and taking the old man's truck down to see the show. He's got this cool little camper that just plops in the bed of the truck, so I'll be sleeping there.

What I need to know is if there's anyone in/around the area who knows a good place to park this bad-boy for the night. Ideally I'd park it right at the concert entrance, but I'm not sure if that would be cool for the entire evening Smile.

Any word on overnight parking for just one night only? I would assume any nearby campgrounds would mandate a full long-weekend rental, if they're not already booked to capacity.

If you somehow live in the area and donate a patch of your lawn/driveway for the night, I can promise you free beer, food, and a good time. No, not THAT kind of good time, get your head out of the gutter.
