As the new season fast approaches, I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on which team will do the best and eventually win the superbowl?
Now i hate to sound like an ass for chosing the defending champs, but the Bucs are gonna do it all over again!!!
any thoughts??
Anybody ever wonder if the hip would release a cd of B Sides and Rarities. I even thought that since this would be geared towards dedicated hip fans that they could include a double package, one a live show on DVD along with a bonus Cd of B sides and Rarities (unreleased songs). They definitely have enought material to put on it. just wanted to know if you had to list a dozen songs or so what would a few of them be.
How to win an arguement
Drink liquor
Suppose you are at a party and some hotshot intellectual is expounding on the economy of Peru, a subject you know nothing about. If you're drinking some health-fanatic drink like grapefruit juice, you'll hang back, afraid to display your ignorance, while the hotshot enthralls your date. But if you drink several large martinis, you'll discover you have STRONG VIEWS about the Peruvian economy. You'll be a WEALTH of information. You'll argue forcefully, offering searing insights and possibly upsetting furniture. People will be impressed. Some may leave the room.
Make things up
Suppose, in the Peruvian economy argument, you are trying to prove that Peruvians are underpaid, a position you base solely on the fact that YOU are underpaid, and you'll be damned if you're going to let a bunch of Peruvians be better off. DON'T say: "I think Peruvians are underpaid." Say instead: "The average Peruvian's salary in 1981 dollars adjusted for the revised tax base is $1,452.81 per annum, which is $836..07 before the mean gross poverty level."
NOTE: Always make up exact figures
If an opponent asks you where you got your information, make THAT up too. Say: "This information comes from Dr. Hovel T. Moon's study for the Buford Commission published on May 9, 1982. Didn't you read it?" Say this in the same tone of voice you would use to say, "You left your soiled underwear in my bathroom."
Use meaningless but weighty-sounding words and phrases.
Memorize this list:
-Let me put it this way
-In terms of
-Vis-a-vis
-Per se
-As it were
-Qua
-So to speak
You should also memorize some Latin abbreviations such as "Q.E.D.", "e.g.", and "i.e." These are all short for "I speak Latin, and you don't."
Here's how to use these words and phrases. Suppose you want to say, "Peruvians would like to order appetizers more often, but they don't have enough money."
You never win arguments talking like that. But you WILL win if you say, "Let me put it this way. In terms of appetizers vis-a-vis Peruvians qua Peruvians, they would like to order them more often, so to speak, but they do not have enough money per se, as it were. Q.E.D."
Only a fool would challenge that statement.
Use snappy and irrelevant comebacks
You need an arsenal of all-purpose irrelevant phrases to fire back at your opponents when they make valid points. The best are:
-You're begging the question.
-You're being defensive.
-Don't compare apples to oranges.
-What are your parameters?
This last one is especially valuable. Nobody (other than engineers and policy wonks) has the vaguest idea what "parameters" means.
Here's how to use your comebacks:
You say: As Abraham Lincoln said in 1873...
Your opponent says: Lincoln died in 1865.
You say: You're begging the question.
You say: Liberians, like most Asians...
Your opponent says: Liberia is in Africa.
You say: You're being defensive.
Compare your opponent to Adolf Hitler
This is your heavy artillery, for when your opponent is obviously right and you are spectacularly wrong. Bring Hitler up subtly. Say, "That sounds suspiciously like something Adolf Hitler might say," or "You certainly do remind me of Adolf Hitler."
So that's it. You now know how to out-argue anybody. Do not try to pull any of this on people who generally carry weapons.
So to better understand how the class of 2007 thinks, most of whom were born in 1985, read this and feel your age:
The people who are starting college this fall across the nation were born in 1985.
They have no meaningful recollection of the Reagan era and probably did not know he had ever been shot.
They were prepubescent when the Persian Gulf War was waged.
There has been only one pope in their lifetime.
They were 10 when the Soviet Union broke apart and do not remember the Cold War.
They are too young to remember the space shuttle blowing up on takeoff.
Tiananmen Square means nothing to them.
Bottle caps have always been screw off and plastic.
Atari predates them, as do vinyl albums.
The statement "You sound like a broken record" means nothing to them. (They have never owned a record player.)
They have likely never played Pac Man and have never heard of Pong.
They may have never heard of an 8-track tape. The compact disc was introduced when they were 1 year old.
They have always had an answering machine.
Most have never seen a TV set with only 13 channels, nor have they seen a black and white TV.
They have always had cable.
There have always been VCRs, but they have no idea what Beta was.
They cannot fathom not having a remote control.
They don't know what a cloth baby diaper is or know about the "Help me, I've fallen and I can't get up!" commercial.
They were born the year that Walkman was introduced by Sony.
Roller skating has always meant inline for them.
Michael Jackson has always been white.
Jay Leno has always been on "The Tonight Show."
They have no idea when or why Jordache jeans were cool.
Popcorn has always been cooked in the microwave.
They have never seen Larry Bird play.
They never took a swim and thought about "Jaws."
The Vietnam War is as ancient history to them as World War I, World War II, and the Civil War.
They have no idea that Americans were ever held hostage in Iran.
They can't imagine what hard contact lenses are.
They don't know who Mork was or where he was from. (The correct answer, by the way, is Ork.)
They never heard: "Where's the beef?", "I'd walk a mile for a Camel," or "De plane, de plane!"
They do not care who shot J.R. and have no idea who J.R. was.
Kansas, Chicago, Boston, America, and Alabama are places, not bands.
There has always been MTV.
They don't have a clue how to use a typewriter.

CELEBS WILL BE PLAYIN' A ROUND
Toronto's high rollers will be hitting the links at the Taboo Resort, Golf and Conference Centre Sept.8 to raise funds for the Toronto film festival. The festival announced yesterday that Taboo, the Gravenhurst resort that is Mike Weir's official "home" club, is now taking reservations for a maximum of 18 foursomes at $6,000 a group for the first Taboo Celebrity Gold Classic. All revenues raised during the day are going to the festival.
The event is to follow the Bell Canadian Open, the PGA tournament taking place for Sept. 4-7 at the Hamilton Golf and Country Club. Taboo has not pinned down any of the pros yet as celebrity guests, but Canadian musicians Tom Cochrane and two members of The Tragically Hip are confirmed for the Gold Classic.
Cochrane and the Hip members also plan to join the Taboo house band that night and present an exclusive concert just for the 18 foursomes.
Reservations for the Taboo event can be made through Nigel Hollidge, director of golf operations for the resort (705-646-5800 or toll-free at 1-866-9TABOO9

I am attending all 3 of Gord's BC shows plus Seattle. I have seats available if anyone would like to carpool to any of these shows, providing gas/ferry costs are split evenly. I will pick you up and drop you off wherever you are in the immediate Lower Mainland, just remember the farthest I will pickup/dropoff anyone is Surrey (sorry Valley folks - the Valley is too far for me).
This particular weekend that Gord is playing these shows is a long-weekend. Traffic around the Lower Mainland goes into a tailspin on long-weekends. As you read further on in this post, please keep that in mind when considering your pickup/dropoff times.
For Whistler, I'm leaving Friday afternoon/evening, absolute latest 5pm, and I'll be driving back after the show. We should get back into Vancouver between 2am and 3am. I have 3 seats available (no worries Sara, if need be, you have dibs on 2 of the seats). The show starts at 9pm.
For Victoria, I'm leaving the Tsawwassen ferry terminal Saturday afternoon and I'm hoping to catch the 2pm ferry, but I'll wait for the 3pm ferry if need be. 3pm is the latest I would be leaving in order to arrive in Victoria comfortably. That show starts at 7pm. I have 2 seats available. **IMPORTANT NOTE:** This show ends after 10pm, but the last ferry back to the Mainland leaves before 10pm, so after the show I'll be driving to Nanaimo to stay the night with family and coming back to the Mainland early the next day. Anyone who agrees to come to the Island must find their own accomodations in Nanaimo (sorry, but I have a big family and no extra room for anyone there).
For Seattle, because of the border wait, the latest I will leave Vancouver is 12pm Noon. I'll be driving back after the show, so we should get back to Vancouver by about 8pm or 9pm. I have 3 seats available. The show starts at 4:30pm.

**ANOTHER IMPORTANT NOTE**
Regarding the Seattle show, I'm stating the following for for my own safety and because it is quite self-explanitory. I will not give anyone a ride to Seattle who has troubles getting into the States, whether it be because you have a criminal record or you want to bring drugs to the show or whatever. If you come along and do not tell me about potential troubles at the border, I will drop you off right where we are and you're responsible for your own way back, no reimbursement of funds for anything. This may sound very harsh on the surface, but by not advising myself or any passengers about your potential troubles, you are putting our lives in danger and increasing the risk of having my car impounded or worse yet, being arrested by American authorites for someone we've just met. This would not be fair to me or any other passengers in my vehicle.
Hey All,
Does anyone have a copy of the Gord show at the Edmonton Folk Festival back in the summer of 2001?
Hey everyone if any of you out there have any pictures i could use on the homepage of the site for the photo of the day - PM me with a link and the title of the picture that you would like me to put up --Thanks Ryan
Anybody pick up the new disc or get to see Neil this summer?
I got the new cd and it came with a dvd of a live acoustic show of Greendale. I love both. The cd version is a little more rockin since he's with Crazy Horse, but the acoustic version is amazing as well.
I didn't know how I'd like a concept album like this but he pulled it off big time. :thumb: :thumb:
What does everybody else think?
Gordon Downie may be better known as lead singer for the Tragically Hip, but the songwriter and solo artist is making waves with his second solo album, Battle of the Nudes. Downie will be performing at Garfinkel’s on Friday, Aug. 29, along with his band, The Country of Miracles and The Cash Brothers.
“”We’re blown away. We’re the only club date on his tour,” said Garfinkel’s manager Erin Gibson. “It will be up close and personal.”
Downie’s first solo album was Coke Machine Glow in 2001. While on tour for that album, he played songs from ‘Nudes’ to see what fans liked and didn’t like. Nudes took more than a year to compile, and mixes sounds from everything —bouncy singles to mournful tunes and back again.
“I enjoy the process of writing to a fault,” said Downie on his website. “I love doing the work. I love solving the puzzle.”
Downie’s band consists of performers who have bands of their own but came together to create an album of mixed talent and distinct sound.
The CD is full of haunting lyrics and interesting sounds. From Downie laughing his way through a chorus to the sound of a snow shovel hitting pavement, Downie and his band are inventive at getting an idea across to the listener.
Mountain Promotions had the concert come across its tables and gave Garfinkel’s the chance to have Downie play at the club. The promoters didn’t have to ask twice. People from as far away as Texas have called about the concert, and people from out of town are even planning their vacation around the it, Gibson said.
For all those Hip fans, don’t worry. As soon as Downie finished Nudes, he was off writing with the rest of The Tragically Hip.
Gordon Downie and The Country of Miracles perform Aug. 29 at 9 p.m. at Garfinkel’s. Tickets are on sale for $35 at Garfinkel’s. Doors open at 8 p.m. For more information, please visit www.mountainpromotions.com.
