Not sure if this has been posted; here's an interview from late 2013 with Johnny Fay from Canadian Musician Magazine.
CM Talks Drums With The Tragically Hip’s Johnny Fay
I hope that the Big Wreck and Friends concert from Oct 2001 at Roy Thomson Hall -Toronto, Ontario – which was filmed for a live web-cast, featuring Bobby Baker and Paul Langlois will be released on DVD someday.
Hello Basers!
Thought it may be a fun idea to try and compile a list of essential Hip recordings that exist out there. What are the greatest concerts that have been captured (either soundboard or audience)?
I'll update this list as more and more people mention/vote for a show. Also, please list a few reasons why you think its an essential recording.
I'll start with the top of my list...
1998-12-12 - Milwaukee, Wisconsin
I believe this show was sent out as a Hip crew 'Christmas Card' if I'm not mistaken. It is a soundboard that is pristine with a setlist and a performance that will make your ears melt.
This recording has my favourite version of 'On The Verge' that I've ever heard (due to perfectly time teases of 'White Christmas', and an asskicking outro). I wish more Phantom Power era shows with this sound quality were available, and hearing shows from this Hip era makes me wish I was born ten years earlier, so I would have been old enough to take it in (instead of being ten years old and listening to my YTV Hit List CDs).
Also, any show with Emperor Penguin is special, and this version contains a Wings' 'Jet' outro, which Gord did a few times on that tour, but here it is documented with amazing sound quality.
...So for me, 1998-12-12 - Milwaukee, WI is an essential Tragically Hip recording for all fans of live Hip material.
Can't wait to hear what others recommend! I'll be back in a few days with some thoughts on another show I have in mind.
Until then, cheers and stay hip!
EDIT:
THE LIST
1990-06-22 - Toronto, Ontario - Ontario Place
1994-12-05 - Brussels, Belgium - La Luna
1996-08-17 - Cleveland, Ohio - The Odeon
1998-08-10 - Boston, Massachusetts - Bill's Bar
1998-12-12 - Milwaukee, Wisconsin - Modjeska Theatre
2002-08-24 - Seattle, Washington - The Pier
2006-06-23 - Toronto, Ontario - Fort York
2006-06-24 - Toronto, Ontario - Fort York
Hey I just got ticks to see the Hip in montreal!!! WOOOO HOOOO
I was looking for videos of the current tour, and just old stuff to get me in the mood. Noticed thehiptracker is gone, cry.
Where does one go to look for bootleg vids of the hip? Ideas?
Just got a notification from thehip.com, saying there is a new single 'Shut Up and Dance'. Been looking on thehip.com for it with no luck yet.
If anyone finds it, could you post it here? Thanks!
Hey guys! Just wondered if anyone has received their pre-orders from Maple Music for the Hip Fully Completely reissues? I got an e-mail from Maple Music on Nov. 17th saying that they are starting to ship orders but three days later I haven't heard anything since. I ordered the Super Deluxe set and just wondered what is going on.
Anybody out there get one yet? I backed it thru Kickstarter back in March. I should be getting it soon. Apparently mind-blowingly good lossless audio. Discuss.

And speaking of Fully Completely, a terrific deluxe reissue will hit the stores next week. Since I wrote the liner notes for this one, I’ve also turned it into an episode of The Ongoing History of New Music. It’s a very deep dive–a fully, completely one–into the making of the album. I had access to the Hip’s archives (you wouldn’t believe all the stuff they’ve saved!) and help from the band’s Rob Baker. We’ll hear him on the show talking about the album’s artwork, the story behind “50 Mission Cap,” how the album was recorded and a cool story about “Wheat Kings.” Oh, and there’s a brand new Hip song in the mix called “Radio Show.”
You’ll be able to hear that show on the following stations this weekend:
102.1 The Edge/Toronto – Sunday night at 7, Monday night at 11
FM96/London – Sunday night at 7, Monday night at 11
The Wolf/Peterborough – special run Sunday night at 10
98.1 The Bridge/Lethbridge – Saturday night at 6, Sunday morning at 10am
Power 97/Winnipeg – Sundays at 9am and 9pm
Dave FM Kitchener – Sunday night at 7pm
Yep.
Call me when the Wheat Kings beer comes out.
