Hey Guys and Gals...
I have this international relations class at school and one of the questions asks "what factors cause industrial countries to trade amongst themselves (remembering that 80% of trade in industrial countries is done with other wealthy countries)? What theory of trade does this contradict? Well, for you economists out there, I know that the theory is the factor proportions theory, but i don't know why industrial trade patterns contradcit the theory- can anyone help a lost political science student!!! greatly appreciated.

Besides "Have Not Been the Same" (a great book by the way) are there any biographies on The Hip or any in the planning stages that anybody knows about? Would anybody be interested in reading one if there was?

Canada embarks on mass seal hunt

Canada's largest seal cull for more than 50 years is taking place despite protests by environmentalists and animal rights groups.
The government is allowing more than 300,000 seals to be killed, arguing that the campaign is both ecologically sound and economically justified.
Protests helped end the hunting of young seals for their pelts off Canada's east coast 25 years ago.
Some activists say their efforts to report this cull are being blocked.
Sealers have been making their way out to ice floes off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador for the annual hunt.
Under new guidelines, most seals are meant to be shot and not clubbed to death in a bid to make the killing more humane.
Around 140,000 seals are expected to be slaughtered by the end of Tuesday.
The seal hunt in Newfoundland and Labrador withered 25 years ago as images of hunters clubbing infant seals horrified TV viewers across the world.
The US banned imports of seal products in 1972 and the EU followed suit a decade later with a ban on white pelt imports, taken from the youngest babies.
As a result, the Canadian government reduced quotas for seal hunting to as low as 15,000 annually - mainly for meat and local handicraft.
But with fur again in fashion the hunt is back.
Canada increased the quotas last year, allowing a million seals to be killed over the space of three years.
Canadian Natural Resources Minister John Efford said many claims about the hunt were simply wrong.
He argued that the seal population was exploding - an estimated 5.2 million harp seals in the North Atlantic at present - and commercial fish stocks were vanishing.
Mr Efford added that the cull was important for the local economy during a traditionally slow economic time of the year.
But the BBC's Ian Gunn in Vancouver, Canada, says it would be difficult to counter the image of dying seals with such arguments.
The Canadian tourism commission admitted last week it was keeping an eye open for an international backlash should the protests gather strength.
One campaigning group, the US-based Humane Society, has been taking full-page adverts in prominent American newspapers to urge a travel boycott against Canada.
Groups accuse officials of "attempting to scapegoat seals" for their own fisheries mismanagement.
The International Fund for Animal Welfare (Ifaw) says government guidelines on humane hunting methods are being ignored.
"We filmed and witnessed seals being skinned alive right in front of us," Ifaw activist Rebecca Aldworth told Reuters news agency last week.
"We saw live seals being dragged while conscious across the ice with boat hooks, we saw stockpiles of dead and dying seals, it was really horrific."
The Ifaw also accused Canada's federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans of deliberately delaying the issue of ice floe permits to protesters wishing to witness the hunt.

2,500 men and 150 trawlers to gather for intensive 36-hour phase of cull on 12 April
Up to 10,000 seals to be killed per daylight hour
Killing of "whitecoat" seals - aged up to 12 days - banned

So I ran into this forum dedicated to this band called the Mother Hips while I was searching for some info on Wilco. Thier name piqued my intrest and I did some looking around over here: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.motherhips.com/">http://www.motherhips.com/</a><!-- m -->

Sounded kinda cool and were only a few degrees of seperation away from the hip so I checked out some of their songs from their latest album Green Hills of Earth. Sounds kinda cool after a few listens, I can see the connection of finding them while searching for Wilco if that makes any sense.

Anyone ever heard of these guys? they've been around since 91' and hail from California.

That is just embarassing. Montreal is like a second home for me, so it hurts me to say it, but their booing of the US anthem is ignorant, juvenile and insulting.

I don't like Dubbya, but I can seperate him from the men and women living in the United States. We (regular old human beings) put the border there, you'll notice that there is no actual line on the ground between Canada and the US. We're all the same flesh and blood beings, and it seems that politics is damaging what should be, and has been, a pretty peaceful coexistance between nations.

I really hope the folks in Boston show some class and upstage the boo birds by not booing Oh Canada. But, I won't blame them if they do.

Shame on you anthem booers. It makes us all look bad, and it's just plain dumb.

For me, one of the great things about this band is the metaphor, poetry and imagination in the lyrics. It's always hard to pinpoint exactly what a song is about or what it has been inspired by. Granted this was easier in the early days, but the band has matured and developed so much over the years that I'm sure we all have our own interpretations of our favourite Hip tunes...

So, what do you get out of Vaccination Scar?

I haven't really sat down and examined the lyrics yet, but so far, I'm getting a "decision" or "reconcilliation" vibe. Somebody is tenuosly hanging on to a lie or a tale and is deciding whether to let it go and come clean or keep on living the lie, maintaining the mystery... the Tacoma Narrows Bridge (Barely holding together) and the "I'll tell ya like it is..." have helped shape that point of view. To be honest, I think "Bush Administration" sometimes...

Anyway, that's what I'm getting now, might be different in two weeks.

Does anyone have word as to a video for this great song? Maybe the Vancouver Canuck DJ has some insight.

I for one hope it's a really creative video (i.e. - not Silver Jet), but more along the lines of ABAC. I liked that one.

  OT: Too Cool Not To Share... A Heron Outside in Ottawa

So, I run by the canal. And for the past few days, I've noticed a Heron (Actually, I'm no bird expert, it might be a crane or something...) standing in the exact same place.

It stands rigfht in the middle of the murky canal, one foot in the water, one foot tucked under its wing. Silent, still, majestic. At the right time, late in the golden hour, if the sun is just right, just before 9, there really is a Heron outside In Violet Light.

He (Or she...) is always standing about 800 metres West of Frank Clair Stadium and looks to be sleeping as I run by. If you're in Ottawa (And guys if you're looking for a good "spontaneous" date moment) It's worth checking out if you're into that sorta thing.

It's pretty cool, or maybe I'm just a dork. Anyway, thought I'd share.

The Hip, The Summer. It begins again. There's really nothing like it.
