considering none of my friend have even heard of the tragically hip, I will be driving solo from missoula.... and the friend I am staying with (who also has never heard of them but is always open minded) mioght be too bogged down with law school work....

therefore I may be doing the show solo

been a hip fan for 10 years, yet never had the oppertunity to see them live.... would love to have someone to drink with at the show....

Hi all. This summer a friend of mine introduced me to the works of David Sedaris. She lent me a copy of Me Talk Pretty One Day which I promptly devoured. I just finished his collection of holiday stories, Holidays on Ice, and am waiting for his latest effort, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, to be released in paperback or be delivered to the local library. Has anyone else read his stuff? I know I love it. Smile

Hey folks...

Just listening to the 8-12-98 Boston show (Bill's Bar), and I decided to check out my website, which I haven't done in quite some time. I've been reading the fan reviews for shows during the Summer of '98. Everyone was so pumped that the Hip sounded so great and fresh. Hip to Release live shows!
The Hip will soon be releasing live shows to purchase and will do so thru out the tour- more info to come but look for a similar style to Gord Downies solo Tour!
Hip Tour for The US will start mid September and run thru October going east then down south to the west then back to the midwest then east again .Look for the Hip to be touring in Canada in November...

does anyone have any info on if this is indeed still on or when the shows might go on sale?

Well, looks like the furor over those second-hand submarines we unwittingly bought is going to be raised again...now the Brits are having to save us from the machines they sold us!

Fire idles Canada sub in Atlantic

LONDON, England -- A fire broke out aboard a Canadian submarine off the coast of Ireland Tuesday, launching a rescue effort led by the British Royal Air Force and dealing yet another blow to Canada's navy.

Crew aboard HMCS Chicoutimi placed a distress call to the British Ministry of Defence in England and Maritime Force Atlantic in Halifax at 11 a.m. local time, saying a fire had broken out and the submarine had lost power. A spokesman from the British Defence Ministry told globeandmail.com by phone from England that he was also told there were three "minor casualties."

The injuries were cases of smoke inhalation, Maritime Atlantic Force spokeswoman Lieutenant Sue Stefko told globeandmail.com from Halifax.

None of the rest of the crew of 57 suffered any problems and no one had to be taken off the vessel, which is sitting without power about 230 kilometres northwest of Ireland.

Commodore Tyrone Pile, commander of Canadian Fleet Atlantic, told a press conference later Tuesday afternoon that the fire started in an electrical panel. He had no further details.

HMCS Chicoutimi, which joined Canada's navy fleet on Oct. 1, is the last of four used submarines purchased from the British Military of Defence. In the past, a number of problems have hit Canada's submarines -- among other things, some of the vessels needed repairs after cracks were found in their hulls.

But the spokesman said the fire was a fluke occurrence and doesn't indicate a problem with the submarines. "Like any ship or submarine, these are complex entities, warships in general, and although fires and floods and incidents of that nature are a rare occurrence they do happen and they will continue to happen."

The commander of Canadian Fleet Atlantic, later said: "This incident just tells me that like other warships we'll continue to deal with fires and floods and incidents of this nature, that it happened this week and it's just one of those coincidences. "

He said that the crew was well-trained to deal with the blaze.
Defence Minister Bill Graham told reporters Tuesday that the incident is being handled properly.

"I'm very proud of them [the crew] and I know the head of the Navy is very proud of the way they're managing what is a difficult situation."

The Halifax operating centre received a distress call from the crew at 11:15 a.m. local time Tuesday, saying that the electric submarine had surfaced and that there was a fire onboard, Lt. Stefko said.

"By 11:30 they called the operating centre to say the fire was out and they were starting smoke clearance operations and that all 57 members on board were safe."

The crew will remain on board overnight as they wait for a tugboat to arrive to take them back to the U.K.

As well, three U.K.-based navy vessels are headed to the scene and are expected to arrive at the site by Wednesday, the British Defence Ministry spokesman said. They include RFA Waveknight, HMS Montrose and HMS Marlborough. Royal Navy and Maritime Coast guard agency tugs were being made ready as well.

A Nimrod aircraft and a helicopter has also been launched to assist with communications with the submarine. ”There is contact with the vessel,” the MOD spokesman said.

”They're obviously treating this as a serious naval matter.”

HMCS Chicoutimi had left Faslane, Scotland on Monday and was due for an Oct. 18 arrival in Halifax, Captain Holly Apostoliuk, a spokesman for the Department of Defence in Ottawa, told globeandmail.com.

She said that federal officials are in the process of informing family members about the problem on board.

HMCS Chicoutimi was formally accepted by the Canadian Forces this month from the British Ministry of Defence at an official ceremony in Faslane, Scotland.

In 2002, officials discovered that one of the other former British submarines, HMCS Victoria, was only be able to dive to about three quarters of its normal depth because of a damaged hull.

After that incident, the opposition accused the Liberal government of supplying faulty equipment to its troops—suggesting that Canada bought a dented submarine from the British.

Hey folks,

Going to kiss some serious butt here. Just picked up some blank cd's and was wondering if anyone here, out of the goodness of their hearts, would like to burn some hip shows for me. I don't have my own burner, hence the need to ask the good folks at hipbase. Plus I'm not too computer literate and can't understand flac, bit torrent or shn. What? Exactly... PM me or respond to the forum. Hope someone can help.

Do you guys catch yourself singing typical Gord phrases when you listen to the songs...either the album version or live? I do it all the time.

Examples:

Poets - "Bring out yer dead"

Blow - "Same Ann Margaret thing"

Blow - "Into that boxing ring"

NOIS - "She said Georgie baby I know exactly what you mean"

My Music At Work - "La la la la, etceterra"

And then there are a few that may not be typical, but I like them so much I sing them anyways...

ABAC - I'll sing "Pink Moon" at the end as Gord has done numerous times

Vapour Trails - I prefer the pre-Phantom Power version that they sing in Utrecht, 1997 so much that I'll sing those lyris instead

also with Vapour Trails, I always say "truth be told" after "there's nothing uglier than a man hitting his stride", which Gord says from the Milwaukee 98 show.

I know I can't be alone in this.
