I came across this review on yahoo's LAUNCHcast radio network. I got a good laugh out of this one. For the first time I heard Gord referred to as "fair to OK" songwriter. Read what they say about Gord's vocals! I would love to hit this guy in the back of the head with a nice big raw piece of meat! Wow. I guess everybody looks at things differently. Here it is.


ALBUM REVIEW - Phantom Power

True story: Just as I was sitting down to begin this review, I checked my phone messages to hear one from MyLAUNCH columnist Jim DeRogatis, who was just checking in but mentioned not to phone him back tonight 'cause he's off "to review a terrible band...from Canada...what's their name?--The Tragically Hip...."

Which really isn't a fair way for a reviewer to dive into the job at hand. But, c'mon, Jim, I bet The Tragically Hip weren't that bad--I mean, relatively and comparably speaking, if you know what I mean. In fact, I bet The Tragically Hip opened with "Poets," also the opener on the latest LP from the band--and as openers go, it certainly sounds just about right for a big rawk show.

Of course, as the closing refrain to "Save The Planet" (I kid you not) repeats again and again: "What's left to captivate us?" And there sorta lies the rub in regards to The Tragically Hip. The band remains huge in their native land, with a nice but relatively small following in these here States (where the band is now on their third label, following stints with Atlantic and MCA). They remain quite competent musicians, with a fair-to-OK songwriter (Gordon Downie), whose lead vocals alternate between unique and irritating. They used to tour a lot with an American band called Flies On Fire who were really good--two million times better in a Stones sort of way than the Black Crowes have ever been. And they're supposed to be very powerful live, in a Heartland rock sort of way, but I've never had the pleasure. Maybe you may wanna check with Jim after tomorrow... Still, Phantom Power will do nothing to change the band's basic success equation. In other words, if you're not already a fan, nothing here is going to, in Gordon Downie's words, really captivate you.

Only the evil empire could trade for the $252 million man, the guy nobody else could afford and turn a profit, and then have him attempt to bitch slap bronson arroyo's arm so he drops the ball while attempting to tag him.

I'm guilty. Many, many, embarassing times.

Anybody else busted belting out at stop lights or on the highway... or in the drive-through line waiting for the girl to say "Can I take your order?"

I listened to it today to give the Sox good luck.

It was funny then, and it's still funny now.

I noticed at the Rochester show last night that they had mics setup on each side of the stage facing the audience. I can only assume they are taping the audience to add to their recordings.
Are they taping each and every show for posssible release?
Maybe they will not release all of them - but at least they have all of them.
And yes, I know they record all they shows anyway, but I thought I would just point out the audience mics.

Wow Gord was ranting like a mad man last night, almost every song had a GD original comment attached to it. This was the most I've seen him "talk" in a while. He was on fire. Fun times....

Some angry fans in the crowd of 56,128 at Yankee Stadium threw baseballs onto the field and Francona wanted to pull his team off the field.

More objects were thrown onto the field in the top of the ninth inning, and an announcement was made telling fans to not throw anything.

I can understand those fans being upset. I mean how DARE those umpires make the correct call!

I just downloaded the Buffalo bootleg from Dec 20, 2000 from the Hundreth meridian. I used AceFTP to download the shn version. when I converted to wav using Shorten and played them, many of the songs had problems. Speakers cut out at certain points, some one at a time, others both for extended periods. Some songs had long, loud piercing screetches during them. Needless to say this completely ruined the show.

My question is, does anyone else have this show? Is this how it is posted on the 100th Meridian? or is it a result of a downloading error (from the FTP program) or from a conversion error with the Shorten program. The latter I dont believe, because I took the shn files and converted them again and had the exact same issues, which leads me to believe the shns are corrupt.
