This is my first ever "New Topic", so I hope I'm submitting properly, and I hope there are a few members out there with good memories. The Hip are playing Saskatoon this Saturday, and I am a little disappointed there is not a Regina stop, but at least they are not passing us by totally. There is a bit of a checkered history with concerts in Saskatchewan, and I missed a few of the early shows, but thought it would be neat to list the appearances (and non-appearances) and see what anyone else could add. Thanks to the list on this site, I've got quite a few accurate dates already:

2002 - Sept. 29 and 30 - Regina, Centre of the Arts
2000 - Nov. 27 - Saskatchewan Place (skipped Regina)
1999 - March 2 - Regina Agridome
1999 - Feb. 27 - Sask Place
1997 - July 21 - Saskplace (ARA)
1996 - Nov. 18 - Saskplace (skipped Regina)
1995 - July 17 - Craven (ARA)

<1995> - February - skipped the province entirely going from Winnipeg on to 4 shows in Alberta...that really hurt!

<1993> - July - skipped the province on the first Roadside Attraction, although the Heksenketel Video shows them commenting on our mustard fields as they drive through the province...if it was so cool, why didn't they stop!!!

<1992> - November - did they play in Saskatoon at the end of the month? There are some question marks on Hipbase's concert list (1992-11-25? and 1192-11-28?). Anyone remember anything? I am positive they did not play Regina...again!

1991 - July 29 - Doris Knight Hall. It is not in the concert list on this site but is mentioned in one of the threads. I did not attend, and man do I feel stupid! I was just becoming a fan at that time, but guess I was out of the loop. Ahh, to be able to turn back time...

John Underwood had noticed the popularity of sites that focus on wildlife with a camera, and spent $10,000 developing the technology to take it one step further.

His investment has resulted in the creation of a remote controlled rifle and webcam that will eventually allow hunters anywhere in the world to shoot at deer or other unregulated animals on his 330-acre ranch.

"We were looking at a beautiful white-tail buck and my friend said 'If you just had a gun for that,'" he recalls of the scheme's origin. "A little light bulb went off in my head."

Underwood's site, live-shot.com, currently allows visitors to use a .22 calibre rifle for target practice. And the 39-year-old believes his vision is viable, and insists the carcasses won't go to waste.

He plans to hire an attendant to pick up the killed animals, have the meat processed and shipped to the shooters or have the heads preserved by a taxidermist.

Besides the arguments that many animal activists have against the pastime, Texas officials are closely scrutinizing the idea to see if it violates any of their hunting laws. If not, there may be no way to stop Underwood from literally taking a shot with this new venture.

"The current state statutes don't cover this sort of thing," admits Texas Parks and Wildlife Department spokesman Mike Berger.

But he's hoping officials will pass new laws preventing the idea from reaching virtual reality. He wants changes that mandate hunters have to be on site when they shoot. If not, it could be a free for all throughout the world.

"First it was rocks and clubs, then we sharpened it and put it on a stick. Then there was the bow and arrow, black powder, smokeless power and optics," Berger sighs. "Maybe this is the next technological step out there."

HOCKEY ICON: The saga of Barilko, who died in a plane crash after scoring the Stanley Cup-winning goal for the Leafs in 1951, is as compelling as ever. Kevin Shea has written Barilko: Without A Trace, a presentation of the hockey icon's brief life.

Bill Barilko's short life reads like a Hollywood script.

In fact, it may soon by a Hollywood script.

The tragic tale of the 24-year-old Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman, who scored the Stanley Cup-winning goal in overtime in 1951 and then was killed four months later in a plane crash that wasn't discovered for another 11 years, is the subject of the recently released book Barilko: Without a trace.

The book was written by Windsor native Kevin Shea and an option on the story was recently purchased by Hollywood director George Mendeluk, who is the guiding hand behind Fox TV's Northshore.

"The picture of Bill Barilko's overtime goal is the most requested photo in our archives," said Shea, also the manger of special projects and publishing for the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. "His story is so compelling.

"He scores the Cup-winning goal and then disappears in a plane crash. His body isn't discovered for another 11 years, the same year the Leafs win the Cup for the first time since he'd scored, linking the two dynasties.

"Then a whole new generation learns his story when the Tragically Hip record a song (Fifty Mission Cap) about him in 1992 that becomes one of the biggest hits ever in Canadian music."

Knowing that Barilko will forever be remembered for the famous photo of him flying through the air scoring the Cup-winning goal, Shea set out to fill in the unknown details of the Timmins native's life.

Shea started with Barilko's sister Anne Klisanich, who is a volunteer at the Hall of Fame, and dug through the memories of neighbours, teammates, old coaches and even his fiance.

What Shea discovered was Barilko was a popular practical joker with a love for dressing well off the ice and player who only knew one gear -- full throttle -- on the ice.

"His teammates loved him," said Shea, who will bring the last sweater Barilko wore to his book signing Dec. 4 at Chapters in Windsor.

"He was the one that would put shaving cream in your shoes if you fell asleep on the train."

However, Barilko drove Leafs coach Hap Day crazy because he didn't hold back on the crushing body checks he was well know for even in practice.

"His compromise was he'd go, 'Beep, Beep' just before he sent you flying during practice," Shea said.

The Leafs' organization fell apart during the 1950s and it would be 11 years between championships.

TEAM IN DISARRAY

"I think his death threw the Toronto team into disarray," Shea said. "Not finding his body was a story across Canada for months and I don't think that team ever got over that."

Even more tragic is the story of his fiance Louise Hastings.

Barilko had put a down payment on the engagement ring he planned to give Hastings at Toronto's Old Mill Restaurant where the Leafs players gathered every Monday night for dinner.

The two were to announce their engagement Sept. 4, 1951, but Barilko died in a plane wreck near Cochrane returning from a fishing trip with his friend Dr. Henry Hudson Aug. 26.

Hastings made the final payments on the ring, which she still has, but she never did find anyone to take Barilko's place in her heart.

"He died 53 years ago, but people are still fascinated and some are still mourning him," Shea said.

Wouldn't that be nice?

Just found an old tape of the Q107 WAP for Phantom Power. It's from June of '98, and there's an ad for Hungry Man Cogan's drive-time show.

It went like this:

Cogan (Answering the phone): "Hello, Hungry Man."

Some excitied dork who thinks he's called 102.1: "Hey man, Did I win?! Did I win?!"

Cogan: "Uh... yeah, you sure did! You're our Big Winner!... What's your name!"

Dork: *bleeped out,* Ah man, I can't believe I won, I've been calling all day!"

Cogan: "Well congratulations man. All ya gotta do now is come on down to Younge street (The Edge's offices) and pick up your prize. Just tell 'em Hungry Man sent ya."

Dork: "Hungry Man? Okay, will do, thanks so much!"

Cogan: "What's your favourite radio station?"

Dork: "One Oh Two Point One, THE EDGE YAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!"

Cogan: "That's right... alright see ya later winner. Hurry on down to Yonge sreet."

Dork: "Okay man"

Cogan: "Okay, later big winner."

Dork: "Bye"

Laughter fills the studio as Cogan and his producer yuk it up. The Q107 tag line then ends the ad.

If you type Woodstock 2005 in google there are all kinds of reports of plans for Woodstock 2005 and it being held in Canada! I would die happy if the HIP headlined this!

I have an online friend who is going to the Grey Cup this weekend and he's taking pictures of the hip for me:-D

I've all ready asked for permission to post them here!

Great job to Biga for getting those clips up, if you haven't seen them yet they're in the show review section...I can't help but notice the distinct difference in crowd interest between the 2 old songs (Little Bones, Blow) where the crowd was "going off" compared to the borderline lethargy shown during Makeshift... which is quickly becoming one of my all time Hip favourites, and what I would consider a "rock out-able" tune.

I'm wondering if it's a case of the crowd just not knowing the song yet... what percentage of the crowd do you think has actually bought the cd? or heard the song?. Even in the canoe.ca review, the author wasn't overly impressed during Makeshift, Joe and You're Everywhere, which leads me to think that it's merely a crowd familiarity issue rather than actual quality.
