SURLEY CRUE

Saturday marked Motley Crue bassist Nikki Sixx’s fourth-year of sobriety from heroin addiction, but he didn’t appear at all happy about that or appearing for the Barrie Live 8 show.

First the media was informed of the band’s strange request that none of them be photographed individually and then Sixx became the spokesman out of attrition, as Vince Neil and Tommy Lee both passed up the opportunity to speak.

When he did speak, Sixx had little to say about the event and when queried if the band lobbied to play Barrie or were asked, Sixx snarled: “Like I said before this was the only show we were asked to play.”

Most of you probably have seen this article but I just read it and found it utterly ridiculous. Not the entire article, just the part about Motley Crue. I mean, I wondered why they were even invited in the first place since they don't have an ounce of charity in their bodies. This confirms my beliefs about them. The only show they were asked to play eh? There's a reason for that. It's not a big deal about gettting photographed or not but it's wrong to be bitches about it. They should have just posed for photos like everyone else without bringing their jackass attitudes with them.

Anyone catch Neil's P/J "T" shirt he wore at Live 8. Maybe Neil will make a surprise guest appearance during the P/J tour this fall.

I've only been able to compile a short list of songs by other artists which feature a member of The Hip. I know I must be missing some. Anybody know of any other cameo appearances?

- Land by Daniel Lanois: Downie lent vocals to this track.

- The Right Thing by Tom Wilson: Sinlcair co-wrote and plays on this track which appears on 2001's "Planet Love"

- The Streets Where You Live by The Buried Heart Project: Gord grinds out a vocal treatment for the cause.

- Radio Plays by The HDRC: Paul appears and produced the HDRC album.

I consider "Silver Road" a cover, since the whole band backs Sarah on the original 'Men With Brooms' version, and obviously Gord and Bobby's side projetcs are in a different category.

Just wondering if there are anymore instances of Hip members appearing on other albums?

I'm looking to see if Gord played any covers on his Coke Machine Glow gigs. Anybody have any setlists, or remember any covers?

Meanwhile, I'm heartened to discover that the day's message is getting across to fans. The Make Poverty History info booths are doing brisk business in collecting signatures.

Aykroyd gives the Tragically Hip a noisome intro, and singer Gord Downie assumes his twitchy madman persona, letting loose with “Music At Work.” An odd choice for first song. The crowd seems far more appreciative of “Ahead By a Century.” This is definitely the most rapt that the audience has been today.

Alright, Aykroyd has redeemed himself for a day of lousy “comedy” - he's playing harmonica on the Hip's “Poets.” Them's the blues, brother!"

I was just listening to We Are The Next Us on the Hip's website again and noticed that this is NOT the version that I originally heard. Gord's poem is the same yet the backing music is now different.

The version that I have has a guitar that is more prominent in the mix that plays the same few chords over and over throughout the song. Also in my version, Gord's voice is deeper in the mix and harder to hear.

Has anyone else noticed this???

When it comes to summer popcorn flicks, it doesn't get much better than this. The "happy" ending was mildly annoying and there were a couple of silly plot developments, but overall I really enjoyed it. The first 90 minutes are absolutely riveting, and I liked the way Spielberg kept piling on the tension with every scene, creating a creepy atmosphere of doom and dread throughout the majority of the film. Those alien tripods are spooky as hell. I'm usually not a big CGI fan, as it can look a bit too cartoonish sometimes, but damn, the special effects in this flick were some of the best I've seen since Lord of the Rings, and the sound effects were incredible. Tom Cruise may be crazy as a freakin' loon these days, but the dude has always been a pretty solid actor in my book, and I think he does a great job in the movie. I kept waiting for a scene where he jumps up and down on a couch and declares his love for Katie Holmes, but they must have left it on the cutting room floor.

Overall it isn't Spielberg's best, but if you want some good rockin' summer entertainment, you could do much worse. I give it 3 thumbs out of 4!
