Calgary city officials have charged four downtown businesses - all bars and lounges located along 17th Avenue SW, dubbed the "Red Mile" - with a total of 10 safety code violations.The charges relate to overcrowding and blocked fire exits during Friday night's NHL playoff game between the Calgary Flames and the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.

The public safety task force is laying the charges under the Alberta Safety Codes Act.

Capt. John Conley, spokesman for the Calgary Fire Department, said officials aren't taking any chances with safety.


"We have a few scenarios that have happened down in the States in the past couple of years of overcrowded bars and lounges, where they've had fires and people have died as a result of not being able to get out," Conley said. "That's why we have the safety codes in place, for the safety of the patrons inside."
Fire, police and city officials are working together to control the celebrations on the Red Mile, which runs West from the Saddledome, and will be out in force during every Flames game.

"As part of our public safety task force initiative, our objective is to make sure that the establishments ... as well as people who are enjoying the festivities from the Red Mile, are doing it in a safe fashion," Conley explained



I Live off the red mile and there was a game tonight so sadly no sleep for me....but calgary did win..yeay!! lol

GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. (AP) - A woman in a wheelchair who swung knives and a hammer at relatives and police died after being shocked by a stun gun, officials said.

Police tried to talk Emily Marie Delafield, 56, into dropping the weapons before they used the Taser to subdue her Monday, Police Chief Robert Musco said. Delafield lost consciousness after the electric jolt and later died at Orange Park Medical Center.


The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating and an autopsy will be conducted to pinpoint the cause of death.


The two officers involved have been put on paid administrative leave during the investigation, which is standard procedure.


Tasers deliver a 50,000-volt jolt through two barbed darts that can penetrate clothing. About 7,000 of the 18,000 police agencies in the United States had them last year, and they were used by police more than 70,000 times.

for me it's gotta be Neil's 'rockin in the free world' from SNL...i don't think i've ever seen a performer "give 'er" so much for the tv cameras....the intensity, and the power....the hips grace, too from the junos is close up there as well

I've been to BC many, many times...but have never heard of this place before. We're thinking a trip early July. Have you ever been? If so, how was your trip?... Or maybe, do you live near it?
