Live Review: Black Crowes in Toronto

TORONTO - The Black Crowes didn't have that many hits, so it would have been nice had they played them all last night.

They didn't play Hard To Handle.

They didn't play Jealous Again.

They didn't play She Talks to Angels.

They didn't get around to Twice As Hard until almost two hours into their concert at Massey Hall.

And their encore consisted of one song: John Lennon's Instant Karma.


The Crowes did a nice job with it, actually. But it still was an odd choice, given the many unmined nuggets from their own repertoire.

The Black Crowes always have seemed a little high on themselves, and that's fine, since arrogance is a big part of rock and roll.

But one of the main purposes of arrogance is to annoy the people who don't like you, not the people who do.

Led by the Brothers Robinson (Chris, a.k.a. Mr. Kate Hudson, on vocals and Rich on guitar), the Black Crowes are touring again for no particular reason that we can deduce. Commercially they're about as hot as Hudson's acting career.

In a way that's a shame, since the Crowes had a pretty good bluesy, Southern-rock, hippie-wardrobe thing going back in their heyday.

But that was 15 years ago. Their commercial radar has been on the fritz for a long time.

Tiny Massey Hall was about 25% empty when the band took the stage last night, but the venue slowly filled to near-capacity. That usually means the scalpers cut their losses and held a garage sale.

The current approach of the six-member band, which has the bulk of its original members back, was in evidence a couple of songs into the proceedings: Long solo after long solo after long solo.

Guitar, keyboards, more guitar, drums. Does anyone in the stands want to have a go, too?

Chris Robinson still is a fairly charismatic frontman with a good set of pipes, but he went through several

10-minute stretches where he had absolutely nothing to do except hop and clap. He was reduced to bit-player status and had to pretend he was enjoying it.

Every time Chris stepped away from his mike and stood in front of the drum kit, you almost could hear at least half the audience moaning, "Oh no, here we go again."

This particular style still appeals to some music fans, presumably. Like, if you're old enough to have attended Woodstock in 1969 and your lasting impression was, "You know, those three days of music could have used a few more interminably long solos."

The show last night had the feel of a rehearsal. A good-natured rehearsal with some excellent musicians, mind you, but a rehearsal nonetheless.

"Any time you can play a couple of hours of music in a beautiful venue that doesn't have a rave afterward, that's great," Chris Robinson said early in the proceedings. "I'm not saying Ecstasy is bad, but if it makes you listen to that type of music, it must be evil."

A funny line, for sure. But one might ask Robinson, "What drug does one need to endure the type of music your band is playing these days?"

Just picked up a 24 of Keiths to help combat the heat-wave that has started here in Toronto (and southern Ontario), and it looks like Keith's is having a contest called "Turn over the Tartan", in which you peel off the neck's label & see if you've won....a variety of prizes are available.

Thought I'd start a thread for us Keith's drinkers, similar to the "Roll Up the Rim" thread started earlier this year.

Oh, and I'm 0/1 so far :thumb:

Saw the new movie yesterday at a private screening for my work.
Was not impressed. I'm not the biggest X-Men fan, but have seen the other two movies which were much better.
Save your money and wait for the DVD.

My story starts here: for the past eight years of my life I have attended/worked at a YMCA summer camp in New Brunswick known as Camp Glenburn. It is the best memories of my life, and I have made friends that I can never replace.

This year, yet again, I was offered a position on the staff. And then the Charlottetown concert was announced. I prayed that the dates with time off would work out. As it ends up, staff training is scheduled to start June 28th and run for a week before camp sessions start. Usually, the camp director will gladly give time off to people, especially during this week.

So, two days ago, I called him up and left a message. He called me back wondering what I wanted. I thought about this long and hard before the call what I was going to say/ask him. I could use the "family reunion" excuse, or a tonne of other things. I decided that honesty would be the best descision. I told him that if at all possible, I would like to have June 30th at noon, to July 1st at noon off from camp. He asked what for, and I told him the truth: my parents were giving me a grad present which happened to be me and two friends travelling to PEI for the night to see The Tragically Hip. He told me that that kind of request caught him offguard, and that he would have to think about it (he is a really cool guy).

Anyways, we discussed the pros and cons of letting me go, and his main drawback from letting me go was due to the fact that if other people wanted to get time off to go to a concert, he would have say no, and then have to explain to them why he let me go to see The Hip and how they are not allowed to go to their concert of choice. He told me he understands how into them I am (which he probably doesn't... but oh well), and then he concluded on how he would have to sit on it some more. He just called me back, and told me for the above reason, he can't let me go. I am now udderly depressed and feel like being sick to my stomach. He said, if I can come up with an excuse that would help him get around that situation, he may still let me go. The odds are very slim, but there still is a chance.

Now, fellow Hipbasers, in my time of need, please help me. Words cannot describe how much The Tragically Hip means to me, and I bet words cannot describe how much The Hip means to any of us. Everybody here, can you PLEASE help me out, whether it be a petition, or you come up with a golden excuse/rationing/reasoning. This news hit me really hard, because I have had this planned out so well up until this point, the only thing that needed to fall in place was getting this one day off. Any input would be phenomenal.

He told me there's hope, even though its direly slim. I don't know how to end this post, but all I can say right now is that it feels like somebody has knocked the wind out of me. I will be forever in debt to everybody here at Hipbase if they help me out. ANY ideas, bring them forward. If ANYBODY can help, please do.
