So here's a nice little amusing tale (in two parts) for all you hipbasers who have a perverse appreciation of the infamous Weird Al Yankovic. True story!!! Smile

PART I: "Stick it up your pasta"

So my wife and I had our 5 year anniversary yesterday, and to celebrate the occasion I wanted to cook her a nice traditional dinner. So being of Irish descent, I decided to cook up some homemade gnocchi ("Gnocchi?" you say, "That's not Irish!" Okay. Sure it's an Italian staple, but it's got potatoes dammit!). Anyhow I was working from home yesterday so I got up in the morning trying to get the gnocchi prepared and I had flour and mashed potatoes and sticky dough all over the place (I've never made it before and it was a bit of a mess). So as my wife was on her way out the door to go to work she says , "Good luck with the gnocchi", to which I replied with the first thing that came to mind... accompanied by a certain tune by the once relevant band Limp Bizkit...

Well that gave her a good laugh on the way to work, meanwhile I'm stuck with sticky goopy dough all over my hands and unable to put anything on my stereo. Result? The damn songs sticks in my head like the dough on my hands.

After a while of this madness, including having worked out some alternate lyrics to the Bizkit song, I realized that "hey, this could've been a Weird Al tune!" I then proceed, having finished Round 1 of the gnocchi battle, to get on a Weird Al kick. Now I'm the first to admit that he can be tremendously annoying, but he's also brilliant. How he manages to consistently pop up with a wicked parody of whatever's relevant in pop culture at the time - and with that hair and mustache and accordion - I mean, you've got to give the guy credit. Believe it or not, I even use some of his stuff (such as THIS and THIS ) in a class I teach on deconstructing popular culture... well... I it's a class that I used to teach, since it's been shelved for the time being. NOTE: Maybe it's been shelved because I was using Weird Al in academic curriculum, but I digress...

So anyway... my Weird Al kick yesterday obviously involved as the very first step a quick search on YouTube where I proceeded to find some clips of various Weird Al bits. This included some of the the legendary "Al Music" sessions from the early '90s... you know... back when they actually played music on the station known as MuchMusic. Now I used to have an old VHS tape of a recording of one of the Al Music specials but it long ago disappeared. I was delighted however to find the following clips which brought back a few good laughs. Anyone remember these gems???

ahhh... the good ol' days. Go ahead. Watch'em again. You know you want to. But to wrap up PART 1 let me just say that after the doughy mess was finally cleaned up, the gnocchi was excellent (with a nice salmon dill and garlic sauce... mmm mmm mmm) though a little on the heavy side, as you could imagine when eating balls of solid dough. The Weird Al clips thankfully helped lighten things up a bit. As it turns out, the esteemed Mr. Yankovic's work will come back to play a key role in the second installment of our program, which I'll try to get to if I can beat traffic home in a reasonable time.

I don't plug my band too much....maybe once every 5 months. Anyway, our new album is out (last week)....and it's in cd plus, and HMV stores across Canada. Long-lost Stanley Cup ring resurfaces

For former Maple Leaf Jim Pappin, it's been a mystery more than three decades in the making.

Whatever became of his original 1967 Stanley Cup ring?

Bitter that the Leafs traded him after he led all scorers with seven goals and 15 points during the 12-game playoff run that culminated in Toronto's last Stanley Cup, Pappin wasn't too sentimental about the golden bauble.

So after spending the 1967-68 season with the Leafs, Pappin gave the ring as a gift to his first wife's father, Peter Kyrzakos, when he was dealt to the Chicago Black Hawks.

"I was traded to Chicago in '68. I hated (Toronto general manager and coach Punch) Imlach, I hated everything to do with the Leafs so I gave the ring to my father-in-law," the 67-year-old Pappin told the Star last night.

But Kyrzakos, who had a home in Vero Beach, Fla., lost the ring at a beach sometime during the 1970s.

"He never told me he lost it," said Pappin, who scored the Cup-winning goal in 1967 as the Leafs defeated the Montreal Canadiens in six games. "He hired people, got divers and everything, to look for it for two days."

Unable to find the Stanley Cup heirloom, and distraught over the loss, Pappin's father-in-law asked to borrow teammate Eddie Shack's ring and took it to the same jeweller who crafted the original to have an exact replica made.

Like the ring, the truth remained hidden.

Pappin only found out about the missing ring in 1982 after divorcing his wife, when Kyrzakos explained the story and gave the replica ring back. The two maintained a close relationship until Kyrzakos died three years ago of throat cancer at age 82.

Never thinking he'd see the original again and happily wearing the replacement, Pappin forgot about the ring. One of the few ties to the last Leafs Cup remained buried somewhere in the ocean.

That's until treasure hunter Mark DesErmia and a cockatiel named Reno showed up.

Three weeks ago in Clearwater Pass, Fla., DesErmia – who carries Reno on his shoulder when searching – found himself neck-deep in the Gulf of Mexico. The underwater metal detector told him he had scored.

"When I saw the Stanley Cup (on the ring) it looked like the Virgin Mary to me, so I thought it was another religious artifact," said DesErmia, from Sarasota, Fla.

DesErmia recently put down $2,000 (all figures U.S.) for a new home – a camper-van – in order to devote more time to his "full-time job" searching for valuables on Florida's many public beaches with his metal detector.

He says he doesn't have a lot of money, but wants to do the right thing in returning the ring to Pappin.

"I've been wearing (the ring) and trying to put myself in his shoes," said DesErmia, who has been learning about Pappin's career. "I've been thinking, `What did he go through to win this ring?' I thought what a great moment that must have been for him and the team."

DesErmia says he contemplated putting the ring on eBay and took it to a sports memorabilia collector who offered him $20,000 on the spot. Still, he'd be happy to give it back to Pappin for a reward.

Pappin's current wife, Peggy, was surprised when contacted by the Star with the news his ring had been found. She had never known it was missing.

"We've been married for 23 years and he's never told me this story," she said. "He said, `Peggy, I forgot about it.'"

"That is so unbelievable. The world has a way of coming around."

Pappin said he'd love to have the ring, a reminder of his former father-in-law, back. Especially since his daughter M.J., who was very close to her grandfather, is getting married next weekend in Sudbury.

"I never thought I'd see it again," said Pappin. "I would (pay for it), if it's not too expensive."
