It's that time of year again, folks. I'll get it started.


1. Wintersleep- Welcome to the Night Sky
42 minutes of melodic guitar-drenched genius. Multiple eargasms abound. To borrow a quote from a recent review: “complex and noisy as all hell, but tuneful enough to get “Weighty Ghost” on the radio.” By far my favorite record of 2007.

2. The National- Boxer
I only just got into these guys recently, but I was instantly blown away right from the first listen. An absolutely stunning album from start to finish, and one of my favorite new discoveries. “Fake Empire” might be my favorite song of the year. It’s also one of the best lead-off tracks I’ve ever heard.

3. Cuff the Duke- Sidelines of the City
Solidifies their current status as one of my favorite young rock bands on the planet. This is their best album yet, and I hope they have a lot more in them. Wayne Petti has developed into one hell of a songwriter and the band can rock like nobody’s business.

4. Ron Hawkins- Chemical Sounds
Canada’s most underrated songwriter returns with his most accomplished album to date. This is the sound of his years in Lowest of the Low and the Rusty Nails all rolled into one glorious album, filled as usual with his literate & witty lyrics and addictive melodies. Possibly the best record nobody will ever hear. He really needs to get some kind of distribution deal in place. If there’s any album that deserves to be heard by a larger audience, it’s this one.

5. Arcade Fire- Neon Bible
It’s gotta be tough to follow up one of the most universally acclaimed debut albums in rock history, but I think they pulled it off nicely. These guys are one of the coolest bands this country has ever produced, and I think they’ll be around for years to come. I can’t wait to hear what they do next.

6. The Weakerthans- Reunion Tour
Winnipeg’s finest return after 4 long years with another brilliant marriage of poetry and rock. John K. Samson continues to display his unique songwriting talents and proves once again that as a lyricist he’s right up there with the best of the best. Long may they run! But please guys, don’t make us wait another 4 years before we hear from you again.

7. Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band- Magic
Their best album since Darkness on the Edge of Town. Not only do the E Streeters rock out like mad on this disc, it’s also one of Bruce’s finest moments as a writer. Livin’ in the Future, Gypsy Biker, Long Walk Home and Devil’s Arcade are some of the best songs he’s ever penned in my opinion. Not to mention the insanely catchy garage-rock of Radio Nowhere. The Boss is back!

8. Feist- The Reminder
With the exception of maybe Neko Case, I‘d say Ms. Feist has arguably the best pipes in indie rock. Her songs are just so damn beautiful.

9. The White Stripes- Icky Thump
Good old fashioned ass-kickin’ rock n’ roll from the always dependable Jack & Meg. I’ve always liked them, but I wasn’t a huge fan until I saw them up close and personal at their secret Calgary gig at the Cantos Music Museum. They blew my mind.

10. Wilco- Sky Blue Sky
On first listen one could say that this is the sound of Wilco going back to their alt-country roots, but Nels Cline’s jazzy guitar freak-outs add such a different element to the music and helps to create a record completely unique from anything they’ve done before. Jeff Tweedy is still at the top of his game as a songwriter. Great album!

I was lucky enough to be at the Horseshoe's 60th anniversary Private Part last night.
The Sadies and the Waco Brothers were the bands.
Being a huge Sadies fan I had to be there knowing it was going to be special. The owner introduced them as this era's "Horeshoe BAND!" it was amazing. Then they came on and kicked our asses.
Of course they had tons of guests including Greg Keelor, Bruce and Margaret (their parents), and members of the Skydiggers.
The biggest surprise came when they called Mr. Gord Downie to the stage! The place went insane as did I. Gord said his hello and the band ripped into Fire In The Hole!!!!!!! The Sadies do such an amazing job on this song. Gord was in full rock out mode right down to shining his shoes! They also did I Want To Rock and Roll With You and the SEEK AND DESTROY!! It was intense to be 2 feet from Gord while he screamed through that song.

Amazing night, I had to share.

Anyone see it?

Jenna and I did, and it's very powerful, and very creepy. Exactly what I expect from Joel & Ethan Coen. It has one of the best "villains" of all time, imo. Plenty of suspense and action, and excellent acting, direction, and cinematography. But be warned: there's lots of graphic violence.

I did not read the book, though I do like Cormac McCarthy. Reading it first may help in absorbing the finale.

I highly recommend the film whether you read the book or not.

It has been an amazing 17 years of ups and downs and we now have these two last chances to celebrate the glorious past...

I want to introduce you to my new love.

I am a big fan of live music. Living in the South, especially moderate sized town in the South, a lot of bands really don’t hit where I live. Well, some bands to frequent this area, but for the most part, I really don’t want to hear them. In the almost 3 years that I’ve lived here, I can only think of 2 times that a band has come to town that I was interested enough to want to go. Of course, the first time, I was under the weather with a cold, and I did not want to stand out in a parking lot, under a blazing sun all day. The second time, I just could not get excited to stand in the same parking lot, in the heat, to listen to a 45-minute set.

I’ve traveled all over to see bands play, when I lived elsewhere. When I was based in Chicago, I saw shows in Chicago, South Bend, Indiana, Madison, Wisconsin, and Toronto, Ontario, just to name a few. Now that I am back “home”, I have traveled to outside of Memphis and New Orleans to see shows, simply because it’s really the only options we have.

To help fill those gaps, I have, in the past, come across a number of bootlegs, before the recording industry really started to come down hard on chain and independent music stores selling them. Bootlegs are a crap shoot at best. Some are great quality (recorded from the soundboard, musician’s earpiece) and some are worth the time to listen to them (bad audience recordings). I’ve found my fair share of both, and typically, they are, more often than not, of questionable quality. I hate to even think of the money that was spent to get some of these CDs, getting them to the car, and having to listen to drunk chick scream for 2 hours. Since bootlegs CDs are more of a late 90s phenomenon, I probably have not seen one in nearly 6 to 7 years.

Some bands have wised up to the idea that fans really want to get their hands on live music, and their fans are willing to pay for it. Years ago, Pearl Jam put out a disc for every show they played in Europe. Recently, Barenaked Ladies have started to produce their own “bootleg” concerts, and they have made them available not only from their website but also on iTunes.

The beauty of some bands, along with the venues they frequent, they allow people to audio tape or video record their shows. The Tragically Hip, Canada’s greatest musical secret, has allowed concert goers to do this over the years, and there is a wealth of live Hip music scattered across the world. Back in 2002, the Tragically Hip was touring in support of In Violet Light and fan websites were inundated with .mp3s of their live shows. Unfortunately, due to bandwidth issues for some of the file hosts, most concerts were not up very long.

So, entering the picture would be my new love… BitTorrent. It has been out for over 6 years now, but this fall has really been my first interactions with the program. BitTorrent is an interesting little product. From my understanding, instead of one user connecting to another user’s machine to download entire files, an individual who desires a concert, no longer has to tax one machine or one server or a user’s website to download what could be 100 to 300Mb worth of files. Instead, using BitTorrent protocol, a user is able to get this same concert by hitting a number of different peers acquiring pieces of the files from persons who have already downloaded that file.

Within the past couple of months, there has been a slew of live Tragically Hip music available, in support of their latest album, World Container, that has found it’s way to Torrent websites. Again, with any “bootleg” recording, quality can be an issue. There is one show that is fairly unlistenable, because of the muffled sound and a high level of crowd noise. Unlike the past, though, the quality is rather high for the majority of the shows I have downloaded. Of course, with all amateur recordings, there might be a set up mistake, which requires fixing during the show or a level that is incorrectly set, but when you are talking about less than 1% of the entire show, that is a batting average that I can accept.

Granted, this type of technology can be used for abuse to move copyrighted material, and I do not advocate that in any way, shape or form. The Tragically Hip and other bands are fine with persons recording their music at their shows via audio or video means and freely distributing it. If you have any questions about whether your favorite bands or musicians are okay with the free distribution of their music, you should research their website or fan sites. They typically will have all the information that you are looking for about the availability of their live recordings.
