Anyone know what the tragically hip's head roadie name is? We'll actually i'm not positive that he may be the "head", but he's the dark haired guy that usually wears a Cowboy Hat. If you could let me know that'd be great, I met him once but his name escapes me.

I know we have gone through this already in the Hip in Kingston thread but I did not get a reservation in on time to Woodheads and they are full. Cry Please can I get some recommendations for dinner before the show close to the rink!

Hip frontman to host local radio show

Tragically Hip lead singer Gord Downie is hitting the airwaves as a radio host for an environmental radio show in Kingston.

Tomorrow, he'll co-host Lake Ontario Waterkeeper's weekly radio show Living at the Barricades in a broadcast from the Grad Club at Barrie and Union streets.

The special hour-long show, entitled "Beyond the Barricades: The Promise of a Swimable, Drinkable and Fishable Kingston," will feature environmental experts, musicians and local residents.

Co-hosted by Lake Ontario Waterkeeper president Mark Mattson and vice-president Krystyn Tully, the weekly show brings together individuals and groups at the front lines of environmental protection in their community.

Downie is a longtime supporter of Lake Ontario Waterkeeper, a key environmental group in the province, and has been involved in concerts Waterkeeper has planned over the past couple of years.

Downie and the rest of The Tragically Hip also join Waterkeeper in its opposition against Lafarge's plans to burn tires at its plant near Bath, just west of Kingston.

Tomorrow's radio broadcast will feature Henry S. Cole, a U.S. air pollution and meteorology expert who is scheduled to testify at the upcoming Lafarge hearing that will decide whether or not the cement company will be permitted to burn tires at the Bath plant.

"He'll specifically talk about the unique nature of Lake Ontario and air emissions from industrial smoke stacks and where the air goes," said Mattson.

"His specific expertise [indicates] that when it is on Lake Ontario, there's a greater chance that the pollution isn't dispersed widely and ends up staying in pockets along the shoreline."

The show will also include Wolfe Island musician and producer Chris Brown; Gary Holden, president and CEO of ENMAX, one of Canada's largest utility companies; a local fishing guide; Colin Mosier, Wolfe Island resident and Waterkeeper boat captain; and a special guest.

The Grad Club show is Waterkeeper's second on-site broadcast. The first was held on Wolfe Island last fall.

City ponders Plan B; Hip concert would likely be rescheduled if facility fails to open

If Kingston's new downtown arena fails to open this weekend, the kickoff concert by local rockers The Tragically Hip will likely be rescheduled, not cancelled.

"I don't know that we'd be looking at a cancellation," said Neil Shorthouse, a senior official of the firm managing the city-owned facility. "It would likely be a postponement."

The Hip are scheduled to perform Saturday night at a sold-out show for an expected 6,700 concert-goers.

Two Kingston Frontenacs Ontario Hockey League games are scheduled for opening weekend, tomorrow and Sunday. They could be moved to the Memorial Centre.

The building, now named the K-Rock Centre, doesn't yet have a key civic approval - an occupancy permit - because fire and public safety measures don't yet meet legislated standards.

Shorthouse, director of marketing for the centre and the official who books acts, said the possibility that it will not open tomorrow is being considered.

"There are a number of different contingencies that we can put into place," he said. "We just don't know which one that we're dealing with yet, so we have to wait until the results of the tests are done to understand what our plan of action is going to be."

It's hoped that inspectors approve the building's fire-safety equipment during tests scheduled for today. If the building fails the tests, it is unlikely it could open.

A VIP-attended opening ceremony is planned before the kickoff event in the centre - the hockey game between the Frontenacs and the Belleville Bulls tomorrow night.

That could be bumped to the Memorial Centre, the city's half-century-old spectator arena that remains open.

"We'll look into that and see," Cynthia Beach, a senior manager at City Hall, said in an interview.

Beach, who is overseeing the $46.5-million construction project, stunned city politicians Tuesday night with the news that the building might not open on schedule.

Deputy mayor Rob Matheson said the city and the arena management should look at such options as free tickets to a future event to appease disappointed ticket holders.

"How we deal with the dissatisfaction will go toward how much goodwill is won or lost," Matheson said. "We're doing our best."

The city will lose more than goodwill if the opening is delayed yet again.

"Any delays past the scheduled completion date will create serious risk with respect to the realization of anticipated cash flows and debt-repayment schedules," Desiree Kennedy, a senior city hall finance official, wrote in a report presented to councillors in February 2007.

At the time Kennedy's report was written, the first event in the centre was set for Jan. 18. That deadline was eventually pushed to Feb. 22.

The business plan for the centre is built on a fragile cash flow structure that requires the city to reap profits that can be used to pay the annual costs of borrowing.

If two Frontenacs games are cancelled this weekend, it will hurt the bottom line, since hockey is projected to provide more than 35 per cent of event revenues and 60 per cent of food and beverage revenues yearly.

Shorthouse said contingency plans include the possibility that a permit allowing partial occupancy of the building is issued. He would not elaborate on the contingency plans.

"I'm not at liberty to discuss what those are right now, but having said that, once we get through the tests ... we'll be in a position to tell the public what we're doing," he said.

Moving the Hip concert to another venue is not likely to be considered.

"I don't know that that's something that the band would want to do or what we'd want to do," Shorthouse said. "I think the idea is that this event is a celebration of this facility, so if it has to be postponed, then I think that's one of the options that we'd look at."

He said possible new dates for the show have not been discussed.

"It depends on the band's availability and crew availability for that," he said.

The Tragically Hip perform at The K-Rock Centre Saturday, Feb. 23. Proceeds from the concert will go towards Lake Ontario Waterkeeper, a grassroots waterfront community that promotes access to public waterways and accountability for polluters.

The Hip formed in Kingston and have had their studio close by in Bath for over 15 years.

“It is our home and it is where the heart of the Hip resides,” explains Gord Downie.

The Hip have made four records there and it has been a source of inspiration and recording place for many other musicians.

Downie’s long-standing support for Waterkeepers prompted a cross-Canada tour with the Hip, a solo appearance at ideaCity05, and many fund and awareness raising events like this upcoming show.

  Limited Edition Posters for Kingston !

Looks like there will be a poster for kingston and only 300.

One idea floating around is to number them and have a draw after the show at merch booth showing the winning number of someone who bought their poster earlier. If you come by the booth with the "winning" number you would trade in your poster for a signed one from the band.

Poster is $10.... so thought I would let you guys know as I was talking to merch today about the shows. The poster is for sure... not 100% on the draw idea... just keep an eye out if interested.

PS - Did I mention I need a ride from Toronto to the show ? !!!! Hello?

Just got tickets tonight, coming from Hamilton tomorrow. Are there any places to stay close to the venue? We really don't care where, we'll have our sleeping bags and a cooler full of beer for afterwards! We really need a place to crash... any suggestions?
