I'm getting ready to ship a bunch of items to Canada from the States and I was wondering if someone could explain the fees involved that could potentially be charged to the recipients in Canada. Some of the things (mostly posters and t-shirts) are Gifts, some are Self-Promo items, and others are Merchandise sold online if that makes a difference. The values range from $20 US dollars to $250.

Will someone in Canada be charged a percentage of the "declared value" of the item? In some cases I'd like to declare a value for insurance purposes but in other cases I'd like to avoid a friend having to pay a large tariff on a gift that they didn't even know was coming.

NEW YORK - Gov. Eliot Spitzer announced Wednesday that he is resigning, completing a spectacular fall from power for a politician whose once-promising career imploded amid allegations that he paid thousands of dollars for high-end prostitutes.

"I look at my time as governor with a sense of what might have been," Spitzer said, with his expressionless wife Silda standing at his side. "There is much more to be done, and I cannot allow my private failings to disrupt the people's work."

Spitzer says his resignation is effective Monday. He will be replaced by Lt. Gov. David Paterson, who will become New York's first black governor.

The scandal erupted two days ago when allegations surfaced that the 48-year-old Spitzer spent thousands of dollars on a call girl at a swanky Washington hotel on the night before Valentine's Day.

Spitzer was more composed than he was at his appearance two days ago, when he looked pale, drawn and glassy-eyed. The couple stood quietly Wednesday, inches apart; they never touched as they entered or left the room.

His wife took deep breaths as hundreds of photos were taken at close range. Each of Spitzer's words was accompanied by a rush of camera clicks.

"There is much more to be done, and I cannot allow my private failings to disrupt the people's work," he said.

today it is awarding the prestigious 2008 National Arts Centre Award to
legendary rockers The Tragically Hip.
The National Arts Centre Award recognizes work of an extraordinary nature
and significance in the performing arts by an individual artist and/or company
in the past performance year. The award will be presented to The Hip at Rideau
Hall on May 2 as part of the Governor General's Performing Arts Awards.
Members of the group will be on hand again on May 3 to be honoured during the
awards Gala at the National Arts Centre. For the first time in its history,
the Gala will be produced by the National Arts Centre.
Known for their powerful, energetic live performances and their ironic
wordplay and references to quintessentially Canadian subjects from hockey to
history, The Tragically Hip have sold millions of records worldwide, enjoying

The Tragically Hip were formed in 1983 by five friends from Kingston-Rob
Baker, Gordon Downie, Johnny Fay, Paul Langlois and Gord Sinclair-taking their
name from a skit from the cult classic movie Elephant Pants by Michael
Nesmith.
The group released their first album, The Tragically Hip, in 1987 and
have since released twelve albums, earning two diamond certifications. In
2002, The Tragically Hip met and performed for Her Majesty the Queen at a gala
performance in celebration of her Golden Jubilee. The band was inducted into
Canada's Walk of Fame in 2003 and the Canadian Music Hall of Fame at the Juno
Awards in 2005.
The Hip have established a demanding concert itinerary. They have toured
extensively in Canada, the U.S., Europe and Australia. Most recently the band
has finished a 2006-07 tour to promote their platinum selling album World
Container where they continue to sell out arenas across Canada.
The Tragically Hip continue to support numerous charitable organizations,
lending their name to help raise and donate millions of dollars for various
social and environmental causes, including the Special Olympics, The
Waterkeeper Alliance, the David Suzuki Foundation, the Stephen Lewis

HI I'm new to this forum, i signed up in hopes to generate some interest in the charity auction we are currently doing. The band posed for a photo holding a comfort doll last year while in Portland, and this photo is now up for auction with proceeds going to World Vision to support children in Africa.

As a company with a strong reputation for safety, Volvo has released information about another feature of its flagship S80 sedan. The incorporation of a heartbeat detector sends a warning to drivers’ wireless fobs if there’s someone waiting for them in the backseat. It seems that their marketing scheme is based on one too many horror/thriller movies, as this system seems to be set up to prevent the insane slasher in the back seat from sneaking up on you as you drive down the interstate.

The S80’s Personal Car Communicator is alerted when a heartbeat is detected, so if you happen to find yourself trapped in a zombie movie, you’d be out of luck. That said, another excellent application for this technology could be the prevention of having babies trapped in cars amongst the summer heat. How many times have we heard of forgetful parents leaving their children in the car?

Volvo hopes to sell 50,000 new S80s each year in a global market, quite an ambitious figure given that 70% are hopeful conquest sales. But hey, maybe this new heartbeat detector will be enough to put them over the top.
