It seems the hip rarely use any songs post PP in concert, except on specific album tours. For example, how many times have Lake Fever, Mean Streak, or the Dark Canuk been heard? I'd really like to see WC stay around and have these thrown into the mix for the next tour...

Obviously there are a lot of recommendations for music around here, but I thought I'd mention a phenomenal book that I read last week on a flight to Toronto - Black Postcards by Dean Wareham.

Some of you may know that Dean was the lead singer/ main songwriter for Galaxie 500 and Luna (bands I'd never heard of prior to reading the book, but have been catching up on) and currently is in a band with his second wife (Dean & Britta). Anyway, the book is a great memoir of a guy trying to make it in the music business at a time when the industry was making money hand over fist, and then struggling with how to deal with the Internet. His bands were critically acclaimed, but never got much more than a cult following.

Anyway, it's a great read. The guy has a great sense of humour. And the insights into the dynamics of struggling bands are fascinating, and it certainly has given me a new appreciation for bands that are able to withstand the personality conflicts and stay together to record and tour (especially tour).

The only thing that sucks is that I somehow managed to leave it on the damn plane. :nooooo

Minor leaguer traded for 10 baseball bats

McALLEN, Texas (AP)—During three years in the low minors, John Odom never really made a name for himself.

That sure changed this week—he’s the guy who was traded for a bunch of bats.

“I don’t really care,” he said Friday. “It’ll make a better story if I make it to the big leagues.”

For now, Odom is headed to the Laredo Broncos of the United League. They got him Tuesday from the Calgary Vipers of the Golden Baseball League for a most unlikely price: 10 Prairie Sticks Maple Bats, double-dipped black, 34-inch, C243 style.

“They just wanted some bats, good bats—maple bats,” Broncos general manager Jose Melendez said.

According to the Prairie Sticks Web site, their maple bats retail for $69 each, discounted to $65.50 for purchases of six to 11 bats.

“It will be interesting to see what 10 bats gets us,” Melendez said.

The Canadian team signed Odom about a month ago, but couldn’t get the 26-year-old righty into the country. It seems Odom had a “minor” but unspecified criminal record that wasn’t revealed to immigration officials before they scanned his passport, Vipers president Peter Young said.

Odom said the charge stemmed from a fight he was in at age 17. Although he thought it had been expunged from his record, it popped up during immigration.

Odom spent hundreds of dollars driving to the Canadian border and staying at a Montana hotel while the matter was sorted out. He then drove to Laredo after the trade.

Originally from Atlanta, Odom was drafted late by the San Francisco Giants in 2003. He pitched 38 games, all in Class A, from 2004-06, and was released by the organization this spring.

Laredo intends to activate Odom on Monday and have him make his first start Wednesday.

Odom said he was supposed to be traded for Laredo’s best hitter. But when that player balked at moving to Calgary, the bats entered the deal.

Laredo offered cash for Odom, but Young said that was “an insult.”

The bat trade wasn’t the first time Calgary came up with some creative dealmaking. The Vipers once tried to acquire a pitcher for 1,500 blue seats when they were renovating their stadium, Young said.

Neil Young is set to release at 10 disc blu ray set. in October. The first disk will cover 1963 - 1972. there will be updates with 4 or 5 futures sets to follow.

32 songs are vulnerable (songs knocked out in first round). 9 of these songs will be ineligable to compete in next year's tournament. The winner will also be retired from competition. This will provide spots for 10 new competitors into the competition to keep next year's tournament fresh.

Maybe this is too serious a topic for discussion here, but I'm just gonna ask a general question and hope someone has any idea or info for me.

I live with my girlfriend and her 2 year old daughter. I have taken her in as my own, and would never see her as anything but my own daughter. Her real father is a big dooshbag with a history of violence, drugs etc. He lives with his parents, who for the most part are ok people. It is for this reason that they have custody to see her every other weekend. He is also required to pay some child support. But he has not paid a dime in almost 6 months, and owes over 2 grand to my girlfriend. This may not sound like much compared to a lot of other child support cases, but for ppl who live pay cheque to paycheque, it is a pretty large chunk.

Part of the problem is that he does not have a job, and therefore, doesn't have to pay anything. According to my understanding of the law, there is a formula to determine how much he pays based on how much he makes, therefore if he makes nothing, he does not have to pay anything.

This seems ridiculous to me, that a guy who shows no interest in doing nothing but sit at his parents house all day doing drugs with his friends, still has a right to see his daughter, even if only twice a month.

We have been looking into taking further action the last couple days as we are getting fed up with this BS.

Any advice on steps to take, or any further understanging of any laws or anything that may work in our favour. We are planning on speaking with her lawyer but its not always that easy to just drop of work schedules and see them right away.
