I see that there are some concerts I might have to check out in August. Anyone from PEI or surrounding areas checking out any of the shows? Sloan are playing one night, and Serena Ryder and Sarah Harmer are playing another. Might be worth checking out.

Been a while since I last popped up on here, I've been swamped with review work and (unfortunately) proper work too... but thankfully I've got a new job lined up starting from next month £2,000 extra a year and 10% savings on all my gas & electricity bills!

As for the review work, I seem to have become (as I commented to those of you I stay in email contact with) the Canadian Correspondant for <!-- w --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.subba-cultcha.com">www.subba-cultcha.com</a><!-- w -->, having been given Aaron Booth, Eric Chenaux, The Pack A.D. and most recently Sloan's latest album. It's been fun referencing The Hip and other Canadian acts I like in the reviews.

So, how've you guys been?

Well I just strolled into my local Sunrise Records the other day and what did my little eye spy, none other than a small section dedicated to vinyl's. Ma Lawd I do declayre that I was quite ecstatic. They were all priced very reasonable, no more than a c.d. which is an added bonus. I asked them what the deal was and they said it was a new idea they'd brought in and if there was anything that I wanted specifically to just ask and they'd put an order in for it. I'm not sure if this is the case with all Sunrise's or if Oshawa's ahead of the curve (that'd be a first for the Dirty Shwa), but I thought everyone might like to know, I know I'm gonna be putting in some orders very soon.

Eddie Vedder is playing two Toronto shows, happening Tuesday, August 12th and Wednesday, August 13th at Massey Hall. You can buy tickets through the 102.1 Inside Edge presale on Thursday, July 10th from 10am to 10pm. Tickets go on sale to the public Friday morning at 10am.

Good weather, good tunes bring out more than 25,000 music lovers

On a beautiful summer evening with the sun shining over picturesque LeBreton Flats, the 15th annual Ottawa Bluesfest opened to a large crowd, great musical acts and a festive spirit on the grounds.

It was a different scenario yesterday morning, though, when festival organizers awoke to driving rain and gloomy skies. But staff were confident the weather would improve by showtime when headliners Matt Mays, Cassandra Wilson, Taj Mahal, the Blind Boys of Alabama and the Tragically Hip were to hit the stage.

Bluesfest founder and CEO Mark Monahan says the music festival has consistently had good luck on opening night when it comes to the weather.

"We've had good weather for every opening night except one -- that was 1999 when it rained," said Mr. Monahan, relaxing by his trailer while the crowds spilled onto the grounds.

"So 14 years of good weather on opening night out of 15 (years) isn't bad."

He said the pleasant night was expected to push the opening attendance to more than 25,000, with most of the festival-goers coming for the Hip, which took to the Bank of America Stage at 9:30 p.m.

Travis Hohner of Ottawa was among the first Tragically Hip fans to park himself in front of the stage for a good vantage point to see his favourite Canadian band.

"I got here about 3 p.m.," said Mr. Hohner, sitting in a lawn chair directly in front of the stage.

"I've seen the band 12 times since 2004, this will be my 13th time," he said, adding he enjoys watching Hip frontman Gord Downie.

Mr. Hohner said he wasn't sure how his wife was going to meet up with him because she was arriving later in the night and would probably have problems fighting her way through the crowd.

By 8 p.m., the number of festivalgoers on the grounds had swelled considerably, which caused long lineups at the beer tents and and washrooms.

Fred Daly, a beer tent supervisor, said he expected to see a rush of beer patrons just before the Tragically Hip show.

"You only have so much room and on opening night you're always going to have some hiccups with the logistics," said Mr. Daly. "But compared to last year, it's a lot better."

He said last year's long lineups were due to the move to the new LeBreton Flats site. However, with about 32 cashiers and servers working the biggest tent, located on the south side of the grounds, he expected the lines to move much more quickly this year.

In fact, the lineups for the nearby portable toilets were longer, sometimes snaking as long as about 50 people.

Jeff Barclay was one of the patient festivalgoers waiting in line to use the toilets.

"I'd rather wait (in line) than have to hold it for later," said Mr. Barclay, who came to Bluesfest to catch the Hip.

By early evening, police and paramedics said they had encountered few problems among the crowds.

Hip beyond need for hype
Rock heroes perform with characteristic prowess

At this point in the Tragically Hip's career, it's not the latest single, video or tidbit of gossip that draws tens of thousands of people out to opening night of Bluesfest '08.

Heck, they're at the bottom of the marketing cycle, to put it in music-biz terms, so very little effort is being expended to make sure they maintain a public eye. Hold the interviews. Save the footage. Ban the bloggers. The plan now is to ramp up the hype for the next album, which is due for release later this year (or maybe next.)

It's a testament to the stature of a band when the hype continues without the help of a publicity campaign. In the case of the Hip, their reputation as a live act was honoured recently with a Governor General's Performing Arts Award, and somehow I don't think the GG selects artists based on whether or not their latest album is charting.

Back in the nation's capital for the first time since that memorable night, the band took the opportunity to celebrate. They've played Bluesfest a bunch of times over the years, but last night was their first show at the splendid new site.

After the opening pleasantries were dispensed in the form of two radio hits, In View and My Music at Work, a wild version of Grace, Too, made it clear it would be an unpredictable night for Canada's veteran rock heroes.

Eccentric singer Gord Downie tossed his jacket at the start of the song, and ripped up the melody with a couple of blood-curdling screams while lurching around the stage. In other words, he was in top form, and at deadline, the band was well on its way to another triumphant demonstration of their concert prowess.

On a beautiful night in Ottawa, throngs of fans streamed through the gates as soon as they opened at 6 p.m. For those who showed up early enough, the first thing that hit them was the ear-splitting force of Matt Mays and El Torpedo on the Rogers stage.

Mays, the Nova Scotia-born resident of Brooklyn, is about to jump headfirst into his marketing cycle with a fiery new album, Terminal Romance, set for release on Tuesday. He's also about to embark on a high-profile tour of western Canada with Kid Rock.

Unlike the Hip, Mays has a lot to prove in the coming weeks. How will he fare? Judging by last night's blistering set, Mays and his band members are ready to impress. The new material takes the set to another level, one the audience would have appreciated more if it wasn't so darn loud.

Thanks to the newly configured Rogers stage, the sound was directed south, straight into Centretown.

Soundbleed was also an issue on the nearby River stage, Back Door Slam, the hot new power-trio from the Isle of Man, managed to hold their own against Mays' onslaught with a blues-rock blast of their own. It was cool to see baby-faced singer-guitarist Davy Knowles, barely 20, turn into a demon with a growling voice and monster chops on guitar. The young band was a hit with Bluesfest's blues-seeking veterans, their lawnchairs planted in the muddy field next to the Ottawa River in anticipation of later sets by Keb Mo and Taj Mahal.

Hi all! As some of you know, I'm a secondary English teacher. I'm starting at a new school this year, working primarily with 10th grade. I just received the list of texts which are used schoolwide for 10th grade courses. They are as follows: To Kill a Mockingbird, Night, A Separate Peace, Julius Caesar, Othello, Lord of the Flies, Ethan Frome, and Antigone/. Now, I know these are all par for the course (har), but I was wondering if anyone, be you a teacher or recent (or even current) student, has any suggesstion as to how to make these texts, well, accessible. While the aforementioned texts are part of the canon of high school literature, they're also a bit...dry. Did anyone have a great experience with these books? A miserable one, perhaps? Please share your thoughts!

Yeah...um....this Order of Canada thing is pretty moronic me thinks. This appointment of Mr. Morgentyler certainly doesn't evoke feelings of pride in my country.

That's great. I guess the safety and health of unborn babies isn't all that important, anyway. :?
