  "Poets" backing vocals

Hey guys. A couple friends and I jam every once and a while and decided to cover Poets. Its sounding good so far but were missing one essential part, Gord's backing vocals which to me make the tune. So if any of you could help us figure them out it woudl be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

NPR.org, November 24, 2008 - Neil Young was just a few days shy of his 23rd birthday when he took the stage at the Canterbury House in Ann Arbor, Mich., for what would become a legendary performance. It was 1968, and Young was about to release his self-titled debut solo album. His old band, Buffalo Springfield, had split up six months earlier, and few people even knew who Young was. But to his own surprise, and to the surprise of the Canterbury House, Young drew a sold-out audience.

Neil Young was horribly nervous before the performance and had to be coaxed from his hotel room by his manager Elliot Roberts and the minister of Canterbury House, Dan Burke. Burke tells NPR Music he remembers Neil Young huddled in Young's hotel room bed, too scared to perform. He told Burke no one would want to hear the Buffalo Springfield tunes or his new tunes. Young was afraid he didn't have enough material. But he was eventually persuaded to take the small stage.

"You really blew our minds," an astonished emcee said while introducing the performance. "We only expected a lot less people than showed up. I think you are a lot wiser than we were."

Despite the packed house, it was an intimate performance, as Young treated his audience to a cozy set of material most had never heard before, though some were Buffalo Springfield tracks. Studio versions of some of the songs, like "Birds" and "The Old Laughing Lady," would appear later on various Neil Young solo albums.

Few people outside of those in attendance that night would have known about the Ann Arbor performance if it weren't for a 1970 single Young released called "The Loner." The B-side of that 45 was "Sugar Mountain" - which, according to a note printed on the disc, was recorded live at the Canterbury House. Neil Young fans speculated that a recording of the entire concert must exist somewhere, and eagerly awaited its release.

The live recording of "Sugar Mountain" reappeared as a B-side to the "Cinnamon Girl" single in 1970, and again in 1977 on the double disc Decade, a compilation of Neil Young hits. But the rest of the concert recorded in Ann Arbor remained a mystery.

Now, 40 years later, Neil Young and Reprise Records are finally releasing the long-awaited Canterbury House performance as part of the Archives Performance Series, Young's effort to release box-set editions of past live concerts. Live at the Fillmore East was released in 2006, with Live at Massey Hall 1971 following a year later.

Sugar Mountain - Live At Canterbury House 1968 will be released Dec. 2, but you can hear the entire album here on NPR Music as an exclusive first listen.

Just wondered if there were any plans for the hip to have a concert released in blu-ray? If not that would seem like a cool idea. Considering the video and sound quality are unreal on blu-ray. Thanks

  The bonus track: case in point

I remember some time ago in what ended up being quite the discussion thread, that the question or possibility of The Hip including a bonus track(s) on their next album was raised.

I always will argue that bonus tracks are not the way to go. They are nothing more than a marketing tool to get more people to buy the album, for tracks that had one of two fates: a) they should have been included in the album anyway and without bonus tracks, or b) they were B-side material at best. All included under the guise of "bonus" as an attempt to get the consumer to feel like they are getting more of a "bargain" for their purchase of a CD.

Maybe the bonus tracks are offered at an exclusive deal with Best Buy or something. Or iTunes. Either way, the finished album represents an unfinished product. There are multiple versions, sometimes, different bonus tracks at different places. How is the fan to choose, without purchasing all versions anyway? Which is the "real" version of the album?

After all, aren't real albums art? Dark Side of the Moon doesn't come in three flavours. Albums now that may have merit to be phenomenal records are squandered by the "bonus track."

I make my case for the unfinished album here, in this post with a very recent and high-profile release.

The Killers released Day and Age. Not surprisingly, like Sam's Town, was released with bonus tracks. But Day and Age was released with only TEN songs. And two bonus tracks. This brings our total track count to 12, which, if those tracks had not been bonus tracks, would be approximately the standard album length. The only way you can get all 12 songs is if you purchase the complete album for an ass-raping 12 dollars on iTunes. And you know what, ten songs is fine, and could possibly make for a really solid album. Not knocking the ten-track album here. These two bonus tracks are available on iTunes...BUT...if you are from iTunes Canada or US, you are able to purchase a THIRD bonus track.

(Are Canadian and US consumers more important? Why are we "eligible" for an extra track? I'm pretty sure that the Killers are bigger in the UK than they are over here on their home turf. )

This comes across as nothing more than a marketing scheme, to me anyway, to get more people to purchase the album at full price. Same goes for the "pre order bonus track," to get you to plunk down your cash and commit yourself before the album even comes out.

At least do what Trent Reznor does, if you have extra material, give it to your fans directly. Don't make them choose, which version to buy, which version to steal, make them preorder digital albums to get a "special bonus track." Put it up on the website for all to just...download.

As a fan, of any band, I would rather the band put out ONE version, a finished, complete version of their record, than be panhandled for an extra couple bucks for supposed "bonus tracks."

If I were a Killers fan, I would be dissapointed, perhaps even angered, at a 10-track album with three bonus tracks.

As the Tragically Hip fan I am, I would definitely feel ripped off if a similar stunt was pulled. With a new album on the forseeable horizon, I can only hope that I am not confronted with having to purchase a CD, and then having to decide if I should put money down on iTunes for extra tracks, or go and download the extra tracks I would feel entitled to.

I really believe this album gets a real harsh rap! I genuinely love M@W, especially the latter half. I would really love to songs like The Bear, Toronto #4 and Train Overnight live. I've just listened to the whole thing through twice, back to back, and I was getting shivers down my spine, especially (randomly) at the bit with the sirens in AIWDTP.

I know I'm not alone here! Come on, show some love. 8)
