This thread is in response to the CBC blog article "How to Dance Like Gord Downie". With your help, hopefully we can craft a "how to" article to submit to CBC blog on penning the perfect Tragically Hip song!
Here are my original ideas thus far - please respond with how I may fine-tune this article. Or respond to the thread with your own Gord Downie-esque song!
Crafting the next tragically hip song is easy, just follow the steps and the song will flow easily! The first thing to determine is the overall theme of the song.
Choose one of the following Themes: Love, Water, Politics, Hockey, Historical Event.
Now we must create the foundations for the verses.
Pick the Location of the song: For best results select a non-metropolis Canadian town (ex: Bobcaygeon, Sault St. Marie, etc...)
Now we must choose either a Wild Animal or Famous Musician: (The Dire Wolf or Bob Dylan have already been taken by Gord Downie, so please get creative)
Craft verses 1, 2 and 3 based on your above selections. Don't worry about rhyming the last words (it is fair game for Gord to rhyme the word "duress" with "duress", so you can do as you please).
It is also mandatory to add in a "yeaaaahhh" after each verse, so do not forget this crucial step.
Once complete, Proof-read your verses and change all of the instances of "Your", "You're", and "You are" to a simple "Yer".
Now that we have confirmed our Who, What, When Where and Why, we will need to focus in on our chorus.
Writing a Gord Downie Chorus is simple - you can do it too!
Pluck a book off of your library book shelf. Open said book to page 40 and write down the first full sentence at the top of that page. Now depending on the length of the sentence selected, you may want to repeat the lyrics either 1, 2 or 3 times. Fear not about the repetitiveness - the voice inflection while singing the song will make it seem like new material. And remember - it is not plagiarism if you give credit to the author of the book (so just make a little notation in the liner notes of the cd jacket).
It is now time to pen the Bridge potion of the song. Remember that the Bridge is Rob Baker's time to shine on a slide guitar solo, so the lyrics need to be subtly simple. Cleverly select a string of 3 words from one of the previous verses, and really elongate them vocally throughout the duration of the guitar solo.
To really drive home the message of the song, end with a final chorus. The vocals will belt out in climax, as the music fades away. The lyrics resonate timelessly with the crowd of music lovers.
Take not gain or loss to heart:
These are minor thoughts.
Conscious purpose never succeeds:
Only innocence attains its will.
--Rodavi
Most often the word innocence is associated with children; and the smaller the child the greater the intensity of that experience seems to be. The eyes of the newborn infant radiate other worldly wisdom and experience; (An experience that is still more "there" than "here").
When we talk about innocence and our return to that way of experiencing reality, we do not have to become little children but we can actualize that style of functioning in our adult lives. We can be just as open and full of expression and energy in a more mature way. Innocence calls us to be present and without preconceived notions of what is happening or who we are. It is the ability to be wide open without fear or defense against the world.
How many remember an innocent request from a child. It is almost impossible to turn it down. It beckons to be fulfilled. It is a request that is devoid of any underlying programming of fear, doubt or low self-worth. The Universe rushes to fulfill that desire.
Innocence cannot be created by will. It is a natural part of who we are and manifests as a by-product. One can open up to it and allow it to enter like an old friend. Gradually one begins to experience it and it becomes a more and more stable state of being. The treasures begin to unravel before our eyes and the moment reveals its beauty for the innocent eyes. Innocence is the nature of reality. Anything lesser is born out of our own false thinking and reliance on our senses that can perceive only a tiny portion of reality.
The concept itself does not do anything nor is its meaning important. The experience is everything and it provides the foundation for further expansion in truth. Descriptions serve as pointers and inspiration but one's own cognition of innocence is what manifests that quality here on earth.
The kingdom of heaven that we seek is only available in this moment. It is the direct experience of who we are. Those 100,000 thoughts a day pre-empt the experience of the kingdom within as well as the innocence that allows us to experience it.
Writing songs about an experience, or Plan, is all fine and dandy. However, has anyone ever really shown you some real tools you can use? Gordon Downie is here for a reason, and I am here for another. After all, I am no entertainer. But I can offer you real tools (techniques) which you can use to return to innocence. Tools for the Plan.
The Ascension Attitudes (Ishayas techniques) are designed to clear out past beliefs and behavior patterns which inhibit full mental and physical functioning. By effortlessly introducing these seed thoughts at a deep refined level of thinking, the entire structure of the mental framework gradually and gracefully transforms to reflect Reality.
Reality spelled with a capital "R" is not the reality of life mixed with suffering, the common experience of most in the world today. The capital "R" kind of Reality means that life is lived in joy, with each moment experienced fully; each opportunity is mined for its rich opportunities for progress, creativity and love. An upward spiral of consciousness is created by ascending; a new structure of awareness is built upon the firm basis of the direct experience of Reality.
The Ascension Attitudes are priceless for the modern world. The intense pace of life is simply too great to be countered without the power of a profound new Teaching. These techniques revolutionize every aspect of life by introducing new experience of inner peace, deep rest and stability.
Ascension is extremely easy to practice and quickly frees anyone from stress. This opens life to maximum creativity, enjoyment, health and success.
We all started life with innocence and brilliance. It has taken us many years to cloud our minds with self-destructive beliefs and habits. But it is easy to begin to reverse this and move back toward the freedom and power of life in the present moment. Worry and fear are not natural; they are artificially learned and maintained by our beliefs and judgments about life.
It is not hard to de-program ourselves from the hypnosis of our past and cultural conditioning. As an immediate result, life becomes easier and more enjoyable. Freedom from stress means that each moment is lived fully and completely. Every day is new with wonderful possibilities when we are no longer victimized by our past.
Now for Plan A….
Show Saturday night in S'Toon was Amazing!! Truly one of the best I have seen. I was totally blown away by the song sandwich we got, I have been waiting for one of these forever. New Orleans>Nautical Disaster>New Orleans I don't have words to describe :jump I really hope this becomes a staple in the Set. Any sandwich, I'm hungry for more! Personally I think it is a great opportunity for the boys to bring back some of the rockers from the EP. Maybe New Orleans>Werewolf>New Orleans. My mind is racing with the possibilities.
Anyhoo, anyone else out there digging on the sandwich.
Hey folks,
Just wanted to throw this out there in case anybody is interested. I have one extra ticket to see Heartless Bastards in Missoula, Montana on Saturday, July 20th. I'm driving down from Calgary on Friday, July 19th, and then heading back on Sunday, July 21. All you would need to bring is $20 for the ticket and money for meals. The ride and accommodations are my treat. Originally I had a couple of friends lined up to go with me, but due to unfortunate circumstances, both of them had to back out. Basically I'm just looking for a travel partner at this point. If I end up going solo, then so be it. But the more the merrier.
Any interested parties, feel free to PM me.

Hey folks, the interview is live over on my site now. Here's the link: http://www.callupontheauthor.com/blog/4 ... lie-to-me/
Would love to hear your thoughts/feedback too.
Pls PM if you want to see an exact pic of this. I have the shirt stored away at my parents and will be over there on the weekend and can email you a photo. It has the two hippos on the front (like the tour poster) and tour dates on the back. It's in mint condition, washed/worn maybe once or twice.
$40 shipped within Canada, $45 anywhere else.
Hey guys, how are you doing? It's been a while...
I'm off to Trafalgar Sq later on to see The Hip (it's been ages and I'm excited!). I've started listening to some of my favourite live Hip recordings, and I've noticed that one of them has gone missing along the way due to various computer changes etc. I can't remember where it's from (Buffalo, maybe?), but it's from around 2000 (M@W tour), and it's a soundboard feed (I think, or at least a very good quality audience recording). The one standout thing about it is that there are some fans giving the band grief and at one point Gord says something like "Young Castro; where'd he go?..." to them. Does that sound familiar? If anyone could upload it for me, I'd really appreciate it. I've had a look on the tracker (or it's current ftp incarnation*) and I don't *think* it's on there.
Thanks!
*Speaking of which, I think some of the shows I've taped aren't on there either. Happy to upload those in exchange for this one I'm looking for.
Hey folks,
It's looking very likely that I'll be doing an interview with someone from the band before their Koko show on Tuesday. I'm not sure yet who exactly I'll be speaking to but if you have any questions you'd like asked... Now is the time!
Tickets are sec 203 row XX. They are the special edition tickets from Phish, not ticketmaster printouts.
First Canadian Phish show in 13 years!
